Back to School: 15 Essential iOS Apps for Students
Mini_discussion_bubble Mashable - Posted Thu, 18 Aug 2011 00:06:08 UTC +00:00
by Forget Sharpies and highlighters, the new back to school essentials this fall are apps for your iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. While cellphones used to be classroom contraband, the burgeoning market of educational apps means iOS devices are as welcome as loose leaf and pencils. This school year, free iOS apps can replace your pricey graphing calculator and clunky dictionary. Inexpensive planners will organize your homework, grades and finances. We’ve rounded up the essentials for the season, so you won’t go back to school unprepared. These 15 apps will keep your academic and extracurricular life on track. 1 of 15 Cost: Free Supported devices: iPhone and iPod touch Why you need it: No one likes to waste money on textbooks -- especially after putting your John Hancock on an increasingly fat tuition check. Amazon Student is here so you can avoid overpaying for your pile of books. Use the app Read More
Where To? gets a barrel of new features for your navigation pleasure
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Sat, 13 Aug 2011 23:00:00 UTC +00:00
I've looked at Where To? before and found it to be a handy, easy to use local guide when I'm looking for anything from Art Galleries to the Zoo. It has info on nearby food, shopping, health care and attractions. The latest version of this app has added improvements to the animations in augmented reality mode, a new direction indicator, and support for Google Earth. It has connectivity to the Motion X GPS program for directions in addition to the existing TomTom and Navigon apps. Where To? also adds store hours when provided by a business. I found that many entries had that information. There's no shortage of these local info apps, and I've always liked Around Me which has some similar capabilities but without the links to nav apps. I like the improvements in this version of the Where To? app. It is an 11 MB download, works in 10 Read More
Five Apps For Back To School

I can't believe it. August is here which means the summer is just about over and the back to school season is almost upon us. So go buy your books, sharpen your pencils and grab these five iOS apps to help you start off the school year on the right foot: Grades 2 is an app that will help you reach your target GPA. It'll let you input your classes, their assignments and your scores as the semester progresses. If you input a target grade, the app will tell you what you need to score on your assignments to reach your goal. iHomework is the ultimate organizer for students. It lets you keep track of courses, teacher information, assignments, grades and more. It has a built-in calendar and reminder system. It also works on your iPhone or iPad and has a Mac app so you can sync your information across all Read More
Where To? adds augmented reality
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Sat, 05 Feb 2011 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
I've looked at Where To? in the past, and found it a well thought out way to find points of interest in your vicinity. Another plus is that it integrates with the Navigon and TomTom apps so that you can send information for precise navigation. Now the app has added a new wrinkle: augmented reality. Basically that means, in either portrait or landscape mode, your camera will activate, and points of interest in categories that you select can be seen layered over the real-time image. The closer the location, the bigger the marker. Generally, I think augmented reality is overblown and not all that helpful, but the developers of Where To? have overcome some of the hazards of the feature and made it easier to use. When lots of labels appear very close together, you can zoom in and move them apart. Improvements have also been made to eliminate compass lag, Read More

Locality app does location based search with a few twists
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Thu, 07 Oct 2010 21:30:00 UTC +00:00
There's no shortage of location-based search apps. One of my favorites is Around Me, but there are plenty of others. Smith Micro has come up with its own search app that has some nice additions, and misses a few things too. The free app, called Locality, uses Google searching to find the nearest restaurants, pharmacies, hospitals, etc. It does that well, generating a list of places, or it can show them on a map. One nice feature is an 'Events' function, so you can see things that might be of special interest around you. Some things it found were local concerts, antique shows, and some commercial events like sales at local stores. The app also features a selection of geo-tagged photos. They are provided by Panoramio, and it's a nice addition to this compact little app. Sadly, the photos are only one way affairs. You can see submitted photos, but you Read More

AroundMe Update Adds An Augmented Reality View And MobileNavigator Integration
Mini_discussion_bubble Apple iPhone Apps - Posted Fri, 15 Jan 2010 17:55:51 UTC +00:00
AroundMe has always been a pretty decent free ad-based app for finding points of interest around you and providing more detailed information for those locations, but yesterday it got even better thanks to the addition of an augmented reality view, MobileNavigator integration, and an improved map compass. AroundMe uses your current position to allow you to find points of interest near you, such as banks, gas stations, hospitals, hotels, and a whole bunch more.  It also provides you with a phone number and address for the location, the ability to share the location via email, Facebook, or Twitter, and the ability to add it to your favorites or contacts. In the previous version of AroundMe, locations where simply displayed in list form, allowing you to choose a location and have it placed on the map.  In v3.5, you can turn your iPhone 3GS to the left in landscape mode, while viewing Read More

Where To? updated with Navigon integration
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Thu, 10 Dec 2009 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
In what appears to be a happy marriage, Where To? for the iPhone [iTunes link] now talks to the Navigon GPS app. You can select a category or search for a business and then transfer that information directly to the Navigon app for turn-by-turn directions. If you don't have Navigon, you get Google Maps directions instead. This is a nice update because the Navigon POI (points of interest) database is contained on the app, while Where To? relies on Google information. This way you get the best of both worlds, with up to date POI info that can easily be picked up the the Navigon app for a pretty seamless experience. While checking the app on a drive around town I found it quick and easy to find some specific places to shop. Restaurants are broken down into categories, including things like cuisine categories or other criteria like "all you can Read More

Where To? [iTunes link] is a nice destination finder for the iPhone. The latest version is on sale on the App Store through today for US$0.99. Note: The iTunes store says it works on an iPod touch, but some people are reporting it won't install. It cleverly integrates maps, a web browser, and a tracking mode to show new points of interest as you move. You can share destinations that you find with email, SMS and the clipboard. You can also search any one of 600 categories or ask the app to surprise you with, for example, a restaurant recommendation. The app supports English, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. How did it work? Pretty well. It's nice to have all the tools you need in one app, although one of my favorite apps, AroundMe [iTunes link] integrates maps, but has no browser. AroundMe is free. It would be Read More

The iPhone has seen its share of location applications throughout its history. We've seen apps that try to build on the functionality of the already great maps application but we usually find ourselves resorting to just trying to find something in the default app. Aroundme is another location app that wants to make finding local places a bit easier for you. With the update that allows for the embedding of maps inside the app, Aroundme has made life a little easier by providing quick access to near locations. Now, the large argument about apps like this is that they don't really have anything that the default maps app can't do. I agree completely. But Aroundme does have a feature that makes it easier to find locations faster while traveling. Instead of having to search for a location and type something in, Aroundme provides categories which can be easily tapped to find Read More
Five must-have iPhone apps for your next trip
Mini_discussion_bubble CNET iPhone Atlas - Posted Fri, 26 Jun 2009 18:44:00 UTC +00:00
TravelTracker Pro keeps tabs on your entire trip, including real-time flight status. I'm winging my way to San Francisco in a couple weeks, so I've been rounding up apps that'll make my trip easier and more enjoyable. Obviously I'll stock up on e-books and movies for the flight (Wondershare's DVD Ripper Platinum is proving a great choice for copying my DVDs to my iPhone), and I've already got old standbys like Urbanspoon and Yelp for finding local grub and businesses. But there's more to a trip than just food and in-flight movies. Here's a list of the iPhone apps I've decided to pack: HearPlanet puts a tour guide in your pocket, letting you listen while you sightsee. I also recommend browsing the iTunes podcast library for anything pertaining to the city you're visiting. In short order I found all kinds of cool stuff on San Francisco, including half a dozen free Read More
Hidden Gems: 3.0 Apps To Download, Wait For Or Avoid
Mini_discussion_bubble Apple iPhone Apps - Posted Wed, 24 Jun 2009 20:00:42 UTC +00:00
The iPhone OS 3.0 apps have been trickling out slowly but surely. I’ve been trolling the RSS feeds, the App Store, Twitter and the Internet non-stop for the past week to keep our Peer To Peer, Push Notification and Mapping Applists completely up to date. Some of the new apps and app updates have been impressive. Others, not so much. This week I’m going to take a bit of a departure from the typical hidden gems format and give you a rundown of what’s hot, what’s not and what’s still in the offing for OS 3.0 apps. For days after iPhone OS 3.0′s debut we wondered where the Push Notification chat applications were. Instead of Meebo, AIM, BeejiveIM and IM+, we were treated instead to interesting but unsatisfying offerings like AP Mobile, Tap Tap Revenge, Star Defense and a handful of others. Sure it’s cool that AP Mobile sends you breaking Read More

Lily933 4.0 stars Version: 3.0.1
I just downloaded the upgrade and was surprised to get a popup message warning me about a minimum age of 17 and other possible "bad" stuff. This was only supposed to be a "bug fix". I don't see anything that has been added to change the rating of AroundMe.
Great Start - Needs more Categories
AMiTdoc2b 4.0 stars Version: 3.0.0
Hi. This is a great start, but needs more categories. Can you make a separate category for fast food chains (instead of thrown in for restaurants). It makes it easier to find something for the nagging little kids or teens who want something to eat from McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, Taco Bell, KFC, etc etc..
AroundME would be great if it doesn't crash on me every few seconds
DrumDoc5 3.0 stars Version: 3.0.0
I just got my iPhone 3GS and I was happy with the application's features. However it kept crashing on me every few seconds even after I deleted it and tried installing it again. I contacted the application support and he was very fast at responding. However no fix yet. Please find a fix soon because the application is otherwise great.
Good app
s_Pae 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
Would be great if it were able to locate Malls and Walmart locations!
It ok
sparta! 3.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
It couldn't find the two gas stations 1 mile from me. However it found all the rest of them in the surounding area. I like the integration with google maps.
VERY USEFUL!!
p0p 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This app is one of the best! I just recently moved to a new town so I had no idea where anything was. But now with this app I know how to get to everything!! I love being able to look up the nearest coffee shop within walking distance. I highly recomend this appliction!!! Thank you so much to whoever made this!
Does this app charge on plan for routes?
Wingateg3 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I didn't get the mapping feature on my AT&T plan when i purchased my iPhone. Right now if I map out a route, it is $.35 a route. It looks as if this app accesses that function. Or is it completely separate? I don't want a bunch of suprises on my bill at the end of the month. Anybody know the answer?
Very useful, but...
omalansky 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Very useful and easy to navigate. Good results for my local area with one caveat: The only real hospital in the county I live in was not included in the "hospital" list—probably because it is a few miles farther from my location than the app considers "local." In other words, this app is fine if you're looking for a restaurant, but in an emergency... I dunno.
Good app
Kdog1217 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
Good application, but don't understand why it doesn't show walmarts on there. Would also like to see a hardware store option on there.
I wish it worked
Déjà 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
It crashed my iPod.... And on top of that it never gave me places around me that was close.
Friggin Awesome
Drew Hood 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
The only complaint: it'd be nice to be able to tell the app where I am in case the phone doesn't know. Sometimes it has trouble determining my location. Otherwise, excellent. ------------------------- FrigginGuy
Very good design and options
Chenster in Boston 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
Does a decent job finding things around you and allows you to add items to contacts, email, route, etc by a press of a button. One thing that is lacking are user ratings.
Great App!
SprayGluer 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Totally useful. Simple and straightforward. Thanks!
Great app!!
MtaAH 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
Downloaded the *free* app now at a restaurant that I had no idea existed!! Excellent app! Especially for the price
Terrific
iXeo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
I regret purchasing the Where To? application when this does a better job for free.
Just Another Search Engine but without options
Richardcnj 1.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
Can not figure out the search criteria. For instance, it shows me a page or two of coffee & bars what only extends 3 miles from my current location. I search Movie Theaters it show theaters up to 41 miles from my location, but misses a huge movie complex that is only 8 miles from me. You can't change the search criteria. Also interesting that hospital search included pet hospitals, a children's heart center (actually a doctor's office). If you needed a hospital in a hurry don't use this one. Additionally there is no description when you select a business, just a phone number and address. There are many more interesting programs like Yelp which at least includes user ratings. I would pass on this. Again, it would have been very nice to try this program before committing to purchase.
Update
Nandeyaro 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.4
Great app except it would be cool if it had a function to input an address and show the things around there. Next update should definately have that.

Waaaay better than yelp or iwant (same thing). Checked the pub/bar list... Almost everyone is listed. Yelp lists 2 in my town... Out of 100....
Milpitas, CA??
thepr0fessor 2.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
This app apparently can't differenciate between Milpitas, California and Houston, Texas. Therefore, it's utterly useless to me. Shame it doesn't have a zip code option. I really wanted to like this, but I'm forced to delete it.
Incredible!

If you have yelp, delete it and get this instead! Aroundme has more search options, finds more locations, and recognizes more cities. Yelp was good, but aroundme is top-of-the-shelf!
Its strength is its weakness

I have tried this in several German cities (Berlin, Munich etc.) now and it generally works fine, since it's mostly a frontend to Google's area information -- which also makes it a bit unreliable sometimes, since the data is often rather out of date...!
Missing some places
Olson23849 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.3
The only problem I have is that when I search for some local places they don't show. These stores are some of the largest food stores and bars around!
Settings?

I love it. I just wish it had settings so I can change it from yards to feet, miles, etc. I don't think a search is necessary sorta defeats the purpose. If you need to search use google.
Great but I have a couple of feature requests.

Great application that I will be using quite a bit.
Funny

I havn't laughed so hard in a long time! Searching restauraunts, it told me there was a Burger King 14 YARDS away! At MY address. The map pointed to the side yard of my house. Now I know what to have for dinner tonight... Next, I searched for Hospitals. Instead of the hospital a mile down the road, it gave me the address of the retired nurse living around the corner. ( I guess she has a hospital in her side yard) I can hardly wait to find what other secrets the neighborhood has been hiding.
In the beginning it wasn’t very accurate, but with the new update, it seems to work great!!!!
