"It's going to be quite some time before you find something so simple so thrilling again." -Offworld

"Canabalt is a fun diversion and sports slick, black and white pixel graphics." -IGN
"This "daring escape" platformer is simply beautiful and beautifully simple." -Kotaku
"Canabalt is actually much more intense than you'd assume of a game which requires a single finger to play." -GameSpy
"It's all very lovely and full of poignant subtext. And awesomeness. Canabalt is a prime example of a simple idea executed extremely well." -JayIsGames
"I have never seen a concept so richly and successfully realized in such a simple yet stunningly complete form. Canabalt represents the power and potential of small independent games." -gameinmind.com

Scribblenauts [$.99] developer 5th Cell isn't one-and-done with iPhone and iPad. This Thursday, actually, will see the release of its second game, a "micro-platformer" called Run Roo Run. It looks remarkably 5th Cell, and according to exclusive details given to Joystiq, it certainly sounds like a game we'll definitely be getting into. In a nutshell, Run Roo Run is an extremely cutesy and heavily instance-based runner -- think, Canabalt [$.99] but with levels and a kangaroo. The experience is sliced and diced into a series of 420 individual levels that are, also, divided cleanly into chapters that all introduce new obstacles or other new elements, like, items. Each week 5th Cell plans to push 10 more additional levels to the game without the need to update. One really interesting thing that popped up during the Joystiq interview about Run Roo Run was the subject of its inspiration. The initial idea came

OrangePixel have a few iOS platform games under their belt. Back in June, we reviewed Meganoid [$1.99] calling it a quality retro platformer with responsive controls. In September, our review of Stardash [$1.99] highlighted the challenging difficulty levels and Game Boy style presentation. Plus they've released Super Drill Panic [$1.99] and Time Chaos [99¢]. Now, OrangePixel has released their latest action platform game, named simply: INC [$1.99], which is probably my favorite of their releases. INC uses a comic-inspired silhouette art style which immediately captured my interest. Your character is a square with legs and blinking little eyes who runs, jumps and shoots his way through levels that are intentionally pixelated with rough edges. The graphics are 8-bit and chunky, with backgrounds reminiscent of Canabalt [$2.99]. And there's a chip-tune soundtrack, which is always popular in any retro platform game. Another distinctive feature is that when you fire your gun, the word

On this week’s bonus edition of The TouchArcade Show, a crew of three -- count ‘em! -- chat with indie games visionary and creator of Canabalt [$2.99], Semi Secret Software's Adam Saltsman. The conversation kicks off with a light discussion of Adam’s oddly elaborate sandwich and then into other much more hard-hitting topics such as the themes and ideas that went into, ultimately, the creation of Canabalt, what Adam offers the indie games community, and several of his other games including Zits & Giggles and Wurdle [$1.99], one of the first iOS word games to hit the App Store. You can download this episode directly or stream it via the links provided below or, hey, you can even subscribe to our fair podcast via iTunes or the Zune Marketplace. This is an awesome and honest discussion that I think you’ll like. We’ll be back, of course, with another bonus episode next

Did you find yourself salivating at the massive list of EA sales only to discover that the balance of your iTunes account is 32¢ short of actually being able to buy anything? If you even are vaguely interested in tower defense games, you need to download this one right away. If you like it, make sure to also snag geoDefense Swarm [$1.99 / Lite] Gravity Hook HD, Free - From the makers of Canabalt [$2.99], here's a game that asks you to climb high instead of run far. posted by Jonathan Kizer on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 4:36 am. It’s not every year that a relatively small niche of a growing industry gets featured in a prominent book of world records, but that’s exactly what has happened. In this year’s version of the Guinness Book of World Records: Gamer Edition, many developers of popular games for iOS, and for more traditional platforms like the PC, have been immortalized in the pages of a book. The following iOS games are highlighted: The following are also given honors, but don’t exist on iOS (yet): The games that were mentioned were all considered “experiments,” given that they were developed on a much tighter budget, and often by first-time coders with a vision. Take Minecraft, for example: the game is now a phenomenom, but who could have guessed that a game with 8-bit, square graphics could thrive among today’s games like Uncharted, Call

Late last year, the developer who created popular indie game Canabalt released the game's source code under an MIT open source license. This license lets other developers use the underlying game engine to power their own games for either private or commercial distribution. While the underlying engine is free to use, the Canabalt developer clearly states other developers cannot "distribute or redistribute our game code, art or sounds." Unfortunately, PLD Soft may have violated this open source license by taking the source code, repackaging it with minimal changes and submitting it to the App Store as an app called Free Running. Apple approved this Canabalt clone, and it is now available for free. While it may prevent the entry of harmful and poorly written applications into the App Store, Apple's approval process is not perfect. Just last week, a Mario clone made its way into the App Store, and now we

Posted 02/15/2011 at 9:07am | by Andrew Groen Neverending one-button platformers have become extremely popular on the iPhone over the past year. Games like Canabalt [iTunes Link] proved you didn't need complicated design to engage players for hours. Now, indie developer Honeyslug is taking that formula a step further with their new release Poto and Cabenga. You control not one but two characters with a single button. The game stars two characters simultaneously (who we can only assume are named Poto and his horse Cabenga, or perhaps the other way around.) As the game begins, the two are riding together through the desert, until Poto is eaten by a giant flying creature! The screen then splits as the symbiotic Poto and Cabenga are controlled with just one button. Poto is trying to make it out of the creature's belly, while Cabenga rushes below to keep pace so the two aren't separated.

Posted 01/04/2011 at 10:30am | by Cory Bohon Canabalt has been an addicting Flash browser-based game for some time, but the iPhone and iPad version of the game changed where we could play this game. Now, thanks to the Indie iPhone Holiday Sale, the developers have been able to give 1/3 of the profits from the game to charity this holiday season. According to a post by the Canabalt developers, sales of the game has been able to raise $25,350.25 for Child's Play charity. This organization helps bring toys and games to children in hospitals all around the world. But, the developers didn't stop there. They have also opened up the source code of Canabalt for anyone who would like to tinker around with the code. They have also provided some statistics about the game: - Flash prototype created in 5 days by Adam- Ported to iOS in 10 days by

One of my all-time favorite games for iOS, Canabalt, has gone open source on us. For real. The developers at Semi Secret Software have released all of the source code, music, graphics and a bunch of other goodies for everyone from serious app developers and casual hacks around the world to tinker with. How cool is that? (If you want to jump right into the open source goodness, go here) Triggering the release of this goodness was the Indie iPhone Holiday Sale, which Semi Secret took part in. To date the sale has raised over $25,000 for Child’s Play, an organization that brings games and toys to children in hospitals around the world. Very admirable indeed. In the spirit of charity and holiday gift giving, Semi Sonic have pushed the games internal workings to open source for everyone from seasoned devs to hobby-time programmers to play around with. The developers behind Canabalt confirmed that the game's source code will be made available as part of an open source project. The game will be licensed under the MIT Open Source license, which will let other developers use the engine source code in its entirety for both personal and commercial projects. While the code powering the game is available for the world to use, the game art, sounds, animations and Canabalt game-specific code is still proprietary. Basically, you cannot re-package their game and claim it as your own, but you can use the underlying engine code to power your own game. The developers warn prospective parties that the code behind the game may not be "ideal or optimal." The game was self-admittedly ported to the iPhone in a rush and was done so before the iPhone 4 and iPad were even released. Only two developers have worked on the game and

We’ve got a whole slew of apps available at rock bottom prices just in time for your holiday celebrations, many at their lowest prices ever. Make sure and act fast though, as many of these apps are available for an extremely limited time. Also, be sure and keep checking this post regularly, as we’ll be updating all the new deals as they are announced. Much like Santa, we don’t stop working until Christmas, and we’re paid in milk and cookies. Speaking of, if you could leave out some chocolate chip oatmeal cookies that would be delightful.

The popular Humble Indie Bundle for the Mac has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity and has become an inspiration for other indie developers looking to follow their lead. In that spirit, six independent iPhone game developers have banded together and are offering their games at a US$2-$3 discount. The devs will give 1/3 of the sale proceeds to Child's Play, a charity that provides toys and video games to children's hospitals across the U.S. The bundle includes six games which will be sold for US$0.99 each. Due to the limitation of the iTunes App Store, each title will be sold separately and not as a $6 bundle. The bundle includes titles like Osmos, a physics-based, cosmic survival game and Drop 7, a puzzle game that mixes the best of Sudoku and Tetris. Games rounding out this indie offering include Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor, Solipskier, Eliss and

The popularity of Canabalt seems to have spawned a whole genre of games on the App Store. I remain a fan of Monster Dash, and Tomena Sanner is another fascinating spin on the very basic one-button gameplay. Now here comes I Must Run, another running-style game that has you as a character running on a 2D field, trying to avoid gaps and obstacles by jumping and punching your way through. Despite the fact that this borrows a lot (if not actually everything) from Canabalt and its followers, there's no denying that "IMR" (as developer Gamelion Studios calls it in a teasing FAQ on the app's description) has its own verve as well. The style is very well done. You play a prisoner running from a prison, and there's a little more story here (some of it in the form of a motion comic) than the other games that tend to go

About this time last year, he gave us his picks of the best iPhone apps of 2009 up until then, so we thought we’d make it an annual tradition. I’ve been involved in the iPhone app industry since it first began in 2008 and I have to say that it has come a long way. I’ve seen it grow from a meager launch of 500 applications in the App Store to currently over 225,000. In only two years, the industry has matured at hyperspeed. It spawned an entire ecosystem to support it from a multitude of news and editorial resources to developer engines, promotional services and ancillary niches. With over five billion app downloads and a billion dollars at stake, it’s no surprise that

Canabalt is a project that began as a simple game created to be a test and eventually became something more. The app has become a hit in the app store due to its addictive gameplay and has now been brought to the iPad. The game is essentially a time trial game where you try to get as far as possible before your inevitable doom comes. If any of you have ever played Runner, this game is almost exactly the same idea. The game has a pretty simple design with only a few colors and shapes to make up its levels. But the real beauty is in the way the game makes you feel. Any of you who follow parkour will understand the rush that comes when moving quickly from point A to point B. This same rush is almost captured through the up beat music, birds, glass, and rolls. Jun 22nd 2010 at 3:30PM Er, that would be the Canabalt that intentionally has pixellated graphics? I don't really see what an iPad-specific version would have over a pixel-doubled iPhone version. Semi Secret Software's survival side-scroller Canabalt [$2.99] went universal this afternoon, and while (like most pixel art games) it looked great upscaled on the iPad, Canabalt is even more awesome running at the full 1024x768 resolution. If this is the first you've heard of , check out our review: Canabalt can be played for free online, and the paid iPhone game is nearly identical aside from the fact that you're clicking your mouse instead of tapping with your finger. I really can't recommend this game enough. We awarded it five stars in our October '09 Best iPhone Games Listing, and it's one of the few games that not only has stayed on my phone since it was released last year, but also a game I play nearly every day. A week ago we reported that not only is Adult Swim's Robot Unicorn Attack coming to the iPhone, but they also planned to have it on the App Store by the 1st of June for $2.99. Well, thanks to the magic that is Apple's approval process, their launch date has slipped to simply "June," but after having played a development build of the game, I can say with some amount of authority that it will be worth the wait. Robot Unicorn Attack is one of the many Flash games available on the Adult Swim games portal. Since its release, it has been remarkably popular, and for a good reason: Robot Unicorn Attack strikes a perfect balance between Canabalt [$2.99] style survival platforming, unicorns, rainbows, and most importantly, Erasure. Two days later, and the game is here. The original teaser line the developer emailed us of "RC Pro-Am meets Canabalt [$2.99]" couldn't be a more apt comparison, as Cubed Rally Racer does a great job of combining both the retro feel of isometric NES-era racing games with complete randomization to never play the same track twice. The goal of Cubed Rally Racer is simple, make it to the end of the track without running out of fuel. The controls do take a few races to get used to, as they work exactly like the retro racing

One of my favorite iPhone games (for some time now) has been CANABALT. The game is simple. You’re a guy, running along rooftops, jumping between buildings and through windows… trying to escape what looks like earth’s destruction. Armageddon, one might say. Aliens (or something) are invading, and they’ll often get in your path as well, but can be avoided with a mighty jump. I happened to stumble upon a new web version of the game (at least I think it’s new), and it features 3 gameplay modes. The first and second mode allow you to use the space bar or double-click function on your mouse to jump… the third method (and this is the interesting one) forces you to type in the letter displayed at the top of the screen to jump. Who knew iPhone developers could have education at heart? At any rate, check it out right here at Adamatomic.

As he told us (stay tuned for an exclusive interview with the indie developer), it was pretty hard -- even more so than he actually intended it to be. So, for his second iPhone game, Faraway, he's gone much simpler. Inspired by the iPhone game Canabalt, Thirion has created a one-button game in which the goal is nothing less than to explore the universe. He has it running on a Mac at the show (so he can project the video onto a bigger screen), and we got to have some hands-on time with the new game. You control a comet that flies around an inky black void speckled with dots and circles; the pixelated space aesthetic from Eliss

Given that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars can load up in three seconds flat, I’m really not sure why this game takes so long to get into. Otherwise, I don’t really see too many people playing this title more than once. I think

The number of games I’ve played pales in comparison to some of the other dedicated iPhone gaming sites out there, but I like to think I have a feeling of what the platform’s gaming landscape is like. I’ve gotten to review some of the bigger releases over the past few months, but it’s the smaller games from smaller developers that have really held my attention. I suppose that makes sense, since grand, sweeping stories or specifically designed levels don’t hit me as much the second time around. But there’s just something more about Blue Attack!, Canabalt, and Minigore that keep me coming back month after month. [mouse over a thumbnail to see the game name] Blue Attack! – $1.99 Here’s a game that I never reviewed. It’s a funny thing (haha), reviewing. You can really

**WIN A COPY FREE. FIND OUT HOW AFTER JUMP** You’ve heard us blab about Arthur Ham’s for many weeks now, but let’s meet its “more hardcore” cousin battling robots and tall buildings. For $2.99 and an indie dev release, it may look surprising how this app got legions of 4-star rated AppStore reviews. Once we launched the game, there wasn’t even question… this game deserved every bit of those stars packing action, control simplicity and elegant game design onto one epic game. Presentation In complete contrast with Arthur Ham’s this game is set in a gritty and dark world of what seems to be an alien invasion. The colors used are variations of the colors black, gray and white which perfectly set a unique tone to Canabalt. Every bit of detail is put into the game including pieces of shattered windows flying all over the place, laser sounds, and TWO game

For the last 10 games to make our Top 50 iPhone Games 2009, did you see what I did there? Notice how I rephrased the classic “Best of the Rest” to “Rest of the Best”? The reasoning behind that is I wanted to divide the games into 5 sections and I just couldn’t find a coherent theme to glue these last 10 games together. They’re in NO WAY better or less than the first 40. Let’s just get that out the way… CANABALT, a very respectable port of the Flash game to the iPhone. The soundtrack and artwork look suited for more “serious” gamers than With the latest update including scoreboards and a new soundtrack, no wonder this is a serious gaming addiction. The first full year of the App Store is coming to a close, and so let's take a look back at our favorite games of 2009. Note that these aren't best-selling, most important, or even the best games of the year -- we'll leave those lists to other sites. After I put together my list of 10 awesome free Mac apps for 2009, a lot of folks asked me when the iPhone list was coming out. How about ? Get ready, because I'm about to tell you how to spend those iTunes gift cards you got for Christmas. I've selected an eclectic little group of apps that includes games, productivity tools, chat and more, and it makes a great starter kit for anyone who's new to the iPhone. Advanced iPhone users might even discover a new gem or two. Strap in and tap your App Store icon ... here's 2009 in iPhone apps: The iPhone's built-in camera is pretty good, but by no means great. Tiltshift Generator can help you take some stunning photos in spite of the hardware, though. It mimics a toy-camera tilt-shift effect by blurring part of each photo and adding some vignetting. With the year coming to a close, I feel confident in saying with as much authority as I can muster that 2009 has been an amazing year. Soon we will be posting the results of weeks of deliberation on what we feel were the best games, a holiday buyer's guide for people who opened an iPod touch or iPhone this Christmas, and other year-end stories highlighting the various games we feel are the "must-haves" of 2009-- But it hardly seems right to summarize the year in a few simple lists of game titles, brief synopses and links to reviews when so many remarkable games were created and events transpired that were still highly noteworthy or influential but fall outside of the rigid boundaries of "best of" listings. When the App Store first launched on July 10th, 2008, very few people, myself included, realized the full potential of a reasonably open platform

By Rene Ritchie, Wednesday, Dec 16, 2009 | Some quick App Store updates this week, including Mobile iDisk 1.1, PCalc and Pcalc Lite 1.9, I Am T-Pain 1.2, and Canabalt 1.2. (Not that the iTunes App Store is letting me download some of them!) MobileMe iDisk 1.1 [Free - iTunes link] brings autocomplete for email, saves file sharing emails to your sent folder, allows tap-hold to copy or save to camera roll, cache is now embiggened to 500MB, plus faster downloads and more languages supported (Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Italian, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish) PCalc 1.9 [$9.99 - iTunes link] adds more themes and what-not, but the real news is PCalc Lite 1.9 [Free - iTunes link] which lets you get the basic calc functionality free, and then use in-app-purchase to buy only those features you need, only when you need them. This includes a theme pack ($0.99)

There’s a new dot update to the ultra-simple, ultra-awesome platforming game Canabalt (my quasi-review here). It keeps things pretty simple for the most part, adding a new music track, a global scoreboard, more obstacles and backgrounds, and some slightly improved performance. I’m actually just surprised that the core gameplay has been improved at all, since I was expecting simple bug fixes and more ways to share with Facebook or Twitter from here on out. All in all a nice, pleasant Sunday surprise from Semi Secret Software.

Canabalt [2.99] is getting online leaderboards and some additional obstacles in the not too distant future. We were recently given a sneak peek and shot some video of the new update which hopefully will be released any time now: The new obstacles include a mangled billboards to run across, and a mysteriously massive object that rips apart an entire building which can be seen at the end of the above video. This new huge space-craft (if that is what it is) crashing in to your path has never failed at ending even my best runs since getting the update. 11.12.09 AppCraver recently spoke with Michael D’Ulisse, Chief Marketing Officer of More Blu Sky, Incorporated. He shares his experiences developing for the iPhone and iPod touch. When did you start developing apps for the iPhone? Did you have previous experience as a developer? Me and my brother, Matt, started developing apps in february of this year. I had purchased a Macbook Pro with my bonus money from my day job and I surrendered the computer to my brother so that he could learn Objective-C As a Computer Engineer, Matt has written code for years. Our October game ratings are in place now, and here are the top of the heap. Our monthly "best of" round-up summarizes the top rated games that we looked at in the previous month. Each game reviewed receives a 1-5 star rating relative to the other games from that month. Generally, a 3 or higher is considered a "good" rating. Our final scores are not the product of any traditionally objective measures such as graphics or sound, but simply reflect the games we would most recommend to others. October's "Best iPhone Games" are highlighted here: Soosiz - This is the best platforming game that we've played on the iPhone. It adopts the usual trappings of a traditional 2d platformer but perfectly mixes in a gravity defying mechanism that turns out to be a lot more than just a cute gimmick. Combine that with great controls and a ton of content, and

Canabalt [App Store, $2.99] is one of those game concepts that was done 100% right. The objective is to run across rooftops, gaining enough speed to jump from building to building. Along the way there’s tons of stuff to slow you down such as crates, birds, and even giant bombs that drop out of the sky to vaporize you. The truly epic soundtrack combined with the fast paced, simple gameplay makes Canabalt one heck of an addicting game. It’s available for $2.99 in the App Store, but you can get a taste at canabalt.com. Your time = gone. You’re welcome. Categories: News Tags: analyst, line

It’s the weekend and I’m over in London investigating a host of new iPhone apps out later this year. In the meantime, I’ve hand-picked four of the latest releases from the App Store for you to check out. This week I’ve selected a smattering of fun games. My top pick for this week is Canabalt, plus I’ve also been looking at Nota, Tap Tap Revenge 3 and Real Football 2010. Earlier this week Adobe announced that the latest version of Flash, version CS5, will support iPhone app development. What this means is that an app can be created using Flash and then effectively rendered out as an iPhone-compatible app file. Ustwo, who I spoke to earlier this week, prototyped its minimalist designer game .™ in 48 hours using Flash. With CS5, developers will be able to handle prototyping and development without leaving Flash. What this means for us folk who download apps

I got a first look at Semi Secret Software's Canabalt [App Store] back at GDC Austin, received a preview build a few days later, and since then the game has soaked up an extraordinary amount of my free time. Canabalt has the same appeal to it as other extremely simple games for the iPhone like Doodle Jump [99¢] or the various NimbleBit games such as Scoops [$1.99]. The premise is simple-- You play as a guy who is running across roof tops attempting to escape from some kind of alien invasion that is constantly taking place in the background scenery. Along the way you will need to hop over boxes, break through windows, jump from crumbling buildings, and avoid other obstacles. The only control you have in the game is over your character's jumping. Tapping anywhere on screen jumps, and the longer you press the screen the higher you jump. What

Simple, straightforward old-school platforming
Umpelty
Version: 1.3
It's difficult to make something truly simple and make it good - and it is even more difficult to take something simple and good and make it better. With Canabalt, and with the latest updates of it, they have done both.
The music tracks are superb, the gameplay is intuitive and straightforward, and the graphics are perfectly matched to both. No question, this is the best arcade game I have ever played on my iPhone.

Great game, but I felt there were a few missing features (like how you had to restart the app to see the scores) but this app really fixed it. I learned about canabalt through the flash version a few days before I bought my iPod touch. Canabalt was my first app and
I'll never delete it.
Fun pick up game..

A bit pricey for the content, but the purchase was still well worth it. Loads of fun, great style, twitter integration, etc.
Needs an update that lets you return to the menu without quitting the game.
UPDATE: The new update adds all that I wanted and more. Review raised from four to five stars.

UPDATE: ....and I got them. New update is great, makes this game even better.
$3 really?
Mike48543
Version: 1.0
With such a high rating I thought this had to be worth the $3. I was wrong. The gameplay (since the developer won't explain it) is a little guy running and jumping. To jump, you tap the screen. The speed picks up gradually and you slow down by running into boxes. The whole thing is black and white and every once in a while a bomb is just dropped down on you.
The game was made in two weekends and it shows. Worth $1 as far as iPhone apps go. Gets boring very quick.
A fantastic twitch based adventure!

This game has one objective: JUMP
Even though that is the only objective, the way it throws obstacles in your path and the way graphics and sound is handled makes it a treat to play over and over again. And play it over and over again you will! Each game is quick and painless and will test your reflexes, foresight and luck. Even if you fail to make the high score, you'll want to try to do it again. Have a quick second? Play this game. Have an hour? Play this game. Have a brain? BUY THIS GAME!!!

Version: 1.2
It couldn't be much simpler, just a pixelated little man running his heart out thru a world under siege. He runs at his own pace, the only control you have is when he jumps. The more rooftops he clears, the faster he goes. Doesn't sound like much, does it?
Well, this is easily one of the most addicting games for the iPhone I've played. The graphics are stripped down, simple gray tones, the music pumps you along and you just never know when a battleship blast may turn you into a fine mist.
I am currently playing the latest update 1.2 which claims to have an alternate soundtrack and new obstacles, but I have yet to find them. Maybe on the next rooftop?
I would give it 5 stars but...

The graphics, the sound, and especially the gameplay has made this my new favorite game on my iPhone.
I first heard about this game via Bytejacker (revision3.com/bytejacker) and as soon as I heard there was gonna be an iPhone version, I was stoked. The game is every bit as awesome as the web version with so much room for expansion.
Some ideas:
1. Local and global leaderboard
2. Post score to Facebook
That's it. No game changes as it's already so great.
Do yourself a favor and spend the $3

cactus22minus1
Version: 1.0
Dear developers,
Deleting the review containing the offensive word from your description was the right thing to do. However, replacing it with a paragraph trying to justify it as a joke and equating those who were offended to 'having no sense of humor' was clearly a bad move as it shows that you just don't get it.
Clearly, that offending comment/review WAS indeed supposed to be funny... But the the use of that word is just not something that you joke about. Much the same as you wouldn't include a racial slur in your description. I can't imagine you defending that now would you?
So addictive! So worth it!

I played the flash version of this game online and liked it. It's a fun game, easy to understand, hard to master. Things come at you fast and you quickly have to make the right decision what to do. The controls are very easy to learn. Tap to jump, that's it. It's not a game that will enthrall you for hours, but it's a pretty good time waster if you have a few minutes. Plus my nieces will love it.
