Sometime this summer a wiseacre commenter (we get a few) suggested we do a "Five Apps" for a variety of somewhat offbeat topics. One wasn't so far-fetched however: gastroenterologist. One could say that a gastro doc has about the same needs as any doctor, of course, and that's an easy out. So here are 5 apps that are great for gastroenterologists and possibly any medical specialist... Coming soon: 5 apps for the lemur owner. Epocrates Rx - This free app looks up drugs and is updated weekly. Epocrates [iTunes link] has already been available for other mobile platforms for a while, this is a must-have for physicians, I would think. There's also a Pro version that is designed for medical professionals, and it requires a yearly subscription fee to work. It's $99 for one year, which is pretty reasonable for what this does -- which includes an amazing pill ID tool.

So much faster!
Dr Abell
Version: 2.70
I can’t imagine practicing medicine without it. The photos are crisp, and now that they added OTC’s drug interaction it helps me with advising my patient with up-to-date information. I have to say that the updates makes the App so much faster. Nice job.
Super Cool Epocrates for the Super Cool iPhone!
Dr Pam
Version: 2.70
I have been using Epocrates for 10+ years now, and the Epocrates Essentials for the iPhone is phenomenal! The interface totally rocks! The amount of information available makes it an absolute must-have and is definitely worth the subscription price. I refused to give up my Palm until the full Epocrates Essentials was available for the iPhone and have been busy converting my colleagues still using the Palm to the iPhone by showing them this great program ever since.
Not slow any more
HairPig
Version: 2.70
Updated review: I don't know how much is due to ePocrates update and how much is due to my recent upgrade to a 3G-S from a 1st generation iPhone (I suspect some of both), but the speed is dramatically better. See my original review below. Upgraded rating from 2 stars to 4.
Original review: As a practicing physician, I have used ePocrates for about a decade. The Palm version was excellent; unfortunately, as many others have commented, the iPhone version is painfully slow. This needs to be fixed to make this usable.
Great app!
Karnp
Version: 2.70
Was required in pharm....still best free app around!
New version is such an improvement!!
Power User
Power Nurse
Version: 2.70
I subscribed to Epocrates a few months ago and really find it useful and accurate. The drug information is top-notch -- Epocrates does their homework. It's easy to use and very fast. I'm quite pleased with my purchase.
Over The Counter medications now included!
doc101
Version: 2.70
New update is faster, more responsive. Upgrade to Essentials for a complete Drug reference in your pocket. OTC addition makes it complete.

Home health
Version: 2.70
Very useful no need to carry a drug book anymore! Pill identifier works wonderfully. A patient teaching guide would take it over the top.
Very user friendly and useful
peacechaser
Version: 2.70
I just wish the complete version was cheaper.
Fast launch time and includes OTC drugs
SF_Ped
Version: 2.70
The latest version is much faster to launch and do a search and include the update with the OTC drugs. Very nice!
Great app...
3mikey1
Version: 2.70
For people who need to check that an over the counter drug won't interact w/ their prescrips, but should show interactions btwn meds and things like alcohol, without having to go into the actual med's page.
New release faster -- saved me paying $400 for new 3GS
CA MD
Version: 2.70
After you load new OTC drugs, approve disclaimers, etc, this new version seems to be quite a bit faster as advertised. I was about ready to go plunk down $400 for a new 3GS because the wait times were killing me. Now I can probably hold out awhile longer. Now I just need my other apps to speed up too! (email, yelp, stocks).
OTCs!!
MobileDocSF
Version: 2.70
Check this out: Epocrates includes OTC info now! And you can include OTCs in the interaction checker, too. Epocrates, you just made my day a little brighter. Thank you!!
Love the updates
mobiledoc
Version: 2.70
The new application is not only faster but I love the new OTC content. This is something I have been asking Epocrates to add for years. Its really hard to keep track of the differences between all the versions of Tylenol, Sudafed, etc. This product helps me understand the interactions and side effects of all the major OTC products on the store shelves so I can talk to my patients about the differences.
absolutely necessary
1/2centurygal
Version: 2.70
Took me awhile to figure out how to change formularies since I was used to the Palm version, but now it appears this version is much more powerful and broad. Can't live without it in my family practice job!
Love that it is faster and the addition of OTCs!!
iPod Touch AZ
Version: 2.70
Thanks Epocrates! So, what's next?
Finally speeds up
Tomsnp
Version: 2.70
I have used and loved Epocrates for years, so I am thrilled the latest update finally sped it up. Now I just need CME.
No wireless required/Great Application
herena
Version: 2.70
Now without wireless service I can access most updated, peer-reviewed clinical information on my ipod touch. This is the best app I've ever used. I'm switching to epocrates and will keep skyscape for Harrisons and Stedmans medical dictionary only. I hope epocrates have essentials deluxe available in the near future so that I don't need to go back and forth between epocrates and skyscape for stedmans medical dictionary.
One of the few "must-have" apps
TWCrew
Version: 2.70
Easy to use, awesome information for clinicians and patients, ability to look for medications related to your insurance formulary to pick covered meds, and free. I hope MedTools will be ported over for iPhone soon, which makes this even more useful for medical professionals.
Have you seen these new OTCs??
DrDash
Version: 2.70
The new version of Epocrates is better than before! It is much much faster with the updates I just downloaded (I experienced some trouble with slowness before). And best yet, Epoc has just come out with new over the counter medications!! As a doc who works with many patients on medicaid, being able to recommned otcs will be a big help. The keyboard is still a little buggy, but I think that may have more to do with my first generation itouch instead of this app.
2.7 makes a great app even better
Bossinova
Version: 2.70
Epocrates has taken a great iPhone app and made it even better. The speed improvements are phenomenal!!! This is the best platform for epocrates.
One of the most useful apps available.
MrCmonster
Version: 2.70
This is such a great app, and now it's even better with the addition of OTC meds. Keep up the wonderful work.
Thank You

Version: 1.0
This is one of the remaining applications I've missed since switching from palm treo to my iPhone. As a resident doc I frequently need this. I've been using the online version which was good but of course required an Internet connection. This one I can use in "airplane mode". And the added pill description with pictures is a HUGE plus. Guys, how many times has a patient said they didn't know what they're taking but it's "white with a blue stripe down the middle" or something like that?? A TON!!!
love love love this FREE app!!!!!
Now I'm just waiting for an app to record phone calls like my treo had.
THANKS Epocrates!!
DocBob
Version: 1.0
This is why I'll buy an iPhone tomorrow (or as soon as I can find one!). For doctors like me, this application is almost as vital as the stethoscope. My old Palm is about to be retired! Thanks so much to Epocrates for being available at the start. Apple and Epocrates - two truly great companies.
Another Home Run!
DanDiamond
Version: 1.0
Consistently, Epocrates has been on the cutting edge of applications that improve quality of care while simultaneously improving physician productivity. Thank you so much to the company for their commitment to get this done by the iPhoneG3 launch. As I was standing in line this morning to get my iPhone I was telling my son that the one concern I had was how well I was going to be able to access Epocrates over the web. I was a happy man to find the on-board application done and done with excellence! Wow!
Excellent App
NightShiftMedic
Version: 1.0
I've been waiting for this app since I bought my iPhone. The drug reference is top notch, it will be a big help for me as a paramedic on the street and in critical care.
cool
Cemmy
Version: 1.0
Handy for nurses too!
Not just for doctors...
Jakob Wells
Version: 1.0
...but also the conscious and informed consumer. Easy to use, important to have, and reasonably priced ;)
Back to Basics -- it's wonderful!
QelDoQ
Version: 1.0
Some of you forget that this is the ORIGINAL product -- it's all we had (and we really appreciated it). AND, it syncs seamlessly with a Mac, which the "newer" versions (both Rx and Essentials) didn't. I actually ditched my Palm last year when the iPhone first came out because Epocrates had become useless to me because of the sync problems. I'm very happy to have it again.
Exellent
OncMD
Version: 1.0
Very slick interface... Nicely done. No more need for the Palm
Use it several times a day!
Doc Molly
Version: 1.0
Epocrates Rx (+ Pill ID) on the iPhone is a big improvedment from the Palm OS version. Seamless! Hope to see other medical apps soon!
Greatest MD application EVER!
Me///
Version: 1.0
Ever since I heard about it I've been looking for the day I'd try it. I've been using Epocrates since 2001 on an old Palm, and let me tell you it's the best application ever made for an MD. Extremely comprehensive and with very accurate and useful information to have at your fingertips. Every MD should have it, definitively. My congrats for this amazingly useful resource! Well Done! And thank you Apple for such a wonderful device, you definitely raised up the bar with the iPhone.
Lost my Patients
Darron Weis
Version: 1.1
Thought I'd try this out, but it won't do a thing until you go through their long online registering, which more inconveniently has to be done on a separate desktop computer. Not worth it to me.
Superb
DHEERAJ KAMRA
Version: 1.0
Waiting for the PILL ID to come out for the longest time on epocrates.Great software just got even better. EPOCRATES is "THE REASON" doctors will switch to iphone.
Must Have For Any Healthcare Professoinal
Sharlet
Version: 1.0
I have been using Epocrates for years now. One of the most valuable features is pill identification. I can't tell you how many times a patient has shown me pills they can't identify themselves. This app helps to make clinicians more efficient so they can spend more time doing critical thinking!
Love it!
pinkluna
Version: 1.0
As a nursing student, I have to look up meds for hours every night. This app makes it so much easier to find meds that aren't in our drug book! Love it!
ePocrates
SFFDMEDIC
Version: 1.0
It's FREE! Damn, you can't beat that for an outstanding app! I was ready to throw down some cash for this. Did I mention that this is a FREE app? Go and get yours!!!

I am a pharmacist and this is a great app to have with you at all times !
Great for Nurses
EXRN
Version: 1.0
As an emergency nurse, I find epocrates to be a great tool. Now I can stop carrying my palm and use my iphone. The iphone makes epocrates even easier to use.
Great app!!!
MsandiegoSVN
Version: 1.0
This is way better than having to carry a drug book around during Clinicals.
Great Application
robertmun
Version: 1.0
This is a great application that is widely used in the Pharmacy community. Until now it wasn't available for the iPhone. The Interface is simple yet powerful: Drug Search, Interactions, Pill ID, & Updates. Thank you for this great FREE application!
Unbelievably Free!
SampleRx
Version: 1.0
As a student pharmacist, this is absolutely indispensable. THANK YOU for the perfect, free app to accompany my iPod touch. Highly recommended to anyone in the healthcare field!
Awesome
Apple Jonnyseed
Version: 1.0
I have been waiting for this app ever since I bought my iPhone last year. Epocrates as usual made a program worthy of it's name. Many healthcare providers will be able to use this to better take care of patients. That's good for all of us.
A great iPhone app
DocStitz
Version: 1.0
As a physician, this was one of the only apps I missed after switching from a Palm Pilot. I think it is a much better version of EpocratesRx than what is out for other platforms.
For those complaining about the lack of full Epocrates functionality, please remember that this app is free (the full Epocrates is subscription-based) and that the SDK is still new. I would bet that there are other Epocrates products coming soon if this one proves popular.
FINALLY!
Moby Ick
Version: 1.0
The previous lack of this app on the iphone is the reason that so many Docs have stuck with their inferior Palms. Bless you Epocrates, you have just made my life so much easier, and freed up one of my pockets. Glad to retire that old Tungsten C for good now!
Bye Bye, Treo!
drsarah
Version: 1.0
Excellent drug reference -- and free! Much better than the Palm version. Another reviewer complained that they were expecting more, but this is the FREE version. There will likely be an iPhone version of Epocrates Essentials which is a paid subscription that includes much more and which I'm looking forward to getting in the future.
Looks promising. New to Epocrates.
Winx
Version: 1.0
Pro: Free, it's on the iPhone, very cool to have this data in my iPhone, thank you!
Beautiful

Version: 1.0
Finally - one of the 3 apps needed to help retire my Palm... Luckily the other two are also available. Much better implementation than the Palm version.
