Foursquare Rolls Out New Version Of “Explore” On Mobile With Filters & Improved Search
Mini_discussion_bubble TechCrunch - Posted Wed, 08 Feb 2012 22:25:12 UTC +00:00
This morning, Foursquare launched an updated version of its “Explore” feature for both its iPhone and Android applications. The new version brings over several of the features already available through Foursquare on the web, including filters, photos in search results and the ability to change your location. After updating your mobile app, you’ll see the improvements in the “Explore,” section, Foursquare’s local guide which is augmented by your friends’ recommendations and visits as well as other Foursquare users’ tips and comments. Like a mini local search engine, you can search for venues by category (“coffee,” “nightlife”), name, or even something very specific, like what  food you’re in the mood for (“tuna,” “burgers”). You can also tap “Specials” to see just those venues offering check-in or mayor discounts. Starting today, you’ll now be able to use the new filter button (at the top right on iOS or bottom right on Android) to Read More
Here are some of our favorite apps of 2011
Mini_discussion_bubble GigaOm - Posted Sat, 31 Dec 2011 16:00:27 UTC +00:00
Apps are, at the end of the day, very personal pieces of software. And your favorite mobile app isn’t mine. So we decided to poll the staff here at GigaOM to see what apps changed our lives in 2011. It could be apps that just launched this year, or it could be programs that really came of age or matured greatly through updates. Or it could just be an app we missed before. Some are very familiar but others may be new to you, but all have played a big part in our lives this year. Take a look and then tell us your favorite app in the comments. Android typically takes a backseat to iOS when it comes to getting slick apps. That’s why it’s so refreshing that Hipmunk, the travel search engine, put real time and effort into making its Android app just as awesome as its web and Read More
Foursquare launches version 4.0 with real-time geolocation alerts
Mini_discussion_bubble GigaOm - Posted Wed, 12 Oct 2011 17:33:57 UTC +00:00
Screenshot of Foursquare 4.0 Radar (click to enlarge) Foursquare on Wednesday launched a new version of its mobile application for the iPhone, Foursquare 4.0. The biggest change in Foursquare 4.0 is the addition of an opt-in feature called Radar, which is made possible by the latest version of Apple’s iOS mobile operating system, iOS 5. Radar sends notifications to users based on where they are to remind them to check-in. These alerts are triggered in several ways: when users are close to a place they’ve added to their To-Do list, when they’re close to a place that’s on a Foursquare list they follow, or when three or more friends are checked into a nearby venue. The Radar feature works whether the Foursquare app is open or not, the company said in a blog post. Radar is an interesting extension of Foursquare’s lists feature, which made its debut in August. Now that Read More
Foursquare “Radar” Taps iOS 5 to Alert iPhone Users of Local Activities
Mini_discussion_bubble Mashable - Posted Wed, 12 Oct 2011 17:26:35 UTC +00:00
by Foursquare has released version 4.0 of its iPhone app with a new feature called Radar that informs users about stuff happening nearby. Radar leverages new functionality available in Apple’s iOS 5 SDK — specifically “region monitoring.” Once you opt in to Radar, Foursquare will send you push notifications when you’re nearby places on the Foursquare lists that you’ve created and the lists that you follow, Alex Rainert, Foursquare head of product, tells Mashable. The application will also alert you when three or more friends are checked in at a location within walking distance. Radar is a big step in the direction of Foursquare’s vision, says Rainert. “This is something that we have been working on since Apple first released the SDK,” he adds. “We’re excited to see it in the wild … and learn from that.” Foursquare will add Radar to its other mobile applications in the months ahead. “Radar Read More
Foursquare introduces Events to iPhone check-in app
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Fri, 19 Aug 2011 14:42:31 UTC +00:00
The last Foursquare update was a bit more significant than just in-line picture sharing, as it turns out. The pioneer in location-based social networking has expanded their check-in service to include more than just physical locations. Now you can check in to events that are only going within a set timeframe, with custom UI elements for sports events, movies, and concerts. Foursquare is teaming up with a variety of partners to populate their event database, so no user-created events for now, unfortunately. On the plus side, it means that when you check in to a theatre, you can also share which movie you’re watching. Traditionally, Foursquare stuck with sharing where you’re spending your time, and offering points, mayorships, and badges as incentives to participate. Other social networks like GetGlue have been around to share what kind of entertainment you’re enjoying, but as we can see, these two things are quickly starting to Read More

Foursquare has upgraded its Android and iPhone apps to version 3.0 to kick off some new and enhanced features. Officially debuting yesterday in Apple's App Store and Google's Android Market, the free Foursquare 3.0 app has added a new Explore tab that can zero in on the places you want to go. Tap a certain category, such as food, nightlife, or shops, or type in a specific phrase, such as "books" or "gas station," and Foursquare will show you a list of local spots, anywhere from 2 to 10 miles from your current location. For each spot, you can read recommendations and comments from your friends and other users, helping you decide whether to check it out or steer clear. Foursquare has also revamped the Leaderboard, which now displays the number of points you've picked up over the past week along with the amount of check-ins, badges, and possibly mayorships you've Read More

Foursquare adds photos, comments to location check-ins
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Mon, 20 Dec 2010 22:15:00 UTC +00:00
One thing that is sure to make my wife roll her eyes in disgust is when we're out somewhere and I check in to a venue using Foursquare. I enjoy using the Foursquare iPhone app to check in, gain or lose the mayorship of a location and occasionally get one of those cool badges that they award to users (I'm particularly proud of my Jobs, I'm on a boat! and JetSetter badges). The free app has just been updated and now adds two fun features -- adding photos and comments to check-ins. This is handy, since I currently have to use multiple apps to a) check in and b) send photos of delicious food to friends. Now it's all possible in one app. There's also a history page on the Foursquare website where you can see all of the places that you've visited. Comments are only viewable by your Foursquare friends, Read More
Foursquare finally adds photos, comments and check-in history
Mini_discussion_bubble Download Squad - Posted Mon, 20 Dec 2010 17:10:00 UTC +00:00
Proving that we are well and truly ensconced by the 21st century, Foursquare has finally added photos to the check-in experience. We can only begin to imagine the technological mountains Foursquare had to scale in order to implement this much-wanted, but dauntingly-hard-to-implement feature. There's also a brand-spanking-new first-party Foursquare iPhone app. You can now also comment on check-ins (above right), which should make the synchronization of schedules and meet-ups easier. To make the most of both photos and comments, there is now a History page on foursquare.com, which you can visit to see all of your previous check-ins -- including any photos and comments. Foursquare has been working with its partners to make the most of the new functionality, too: Instagram and Foodspotting will both automatically create 'photo check-ins.' For now, the only mobile Foursquare client for Android is picplz. WebOS is coming later this week, and BlackBerry in January. Developers Read More
Foursquare Checks In Comments And Pictures; Instagram, PicPlz, Foodspotting On Board
Mini_discussion_bubble TechCrunch - Posted Mon, 20 Dec 2010 14:15:47 UTC +00:00
Earlier this month, location-based service Gowalla went on the offensive against rival Foursquare — by linking up with them. Yes, they created a way for you to use Gowalla to check-in on Foursquare (and Facebook). Why would they do that? Because they said that users told them they felt the Gowalla experience was better, but many of their friends were already using Foursquare. So what did that Gowalla experience include that Foursquare didn’t? Well, comments and pictures, for starters. Well, you can strike both of those off the list today. Yes, Foursquare is finally adding both highly requested features to the service. At first, they’ll be available on the iPhone app and the website, but the plan is to quickly get them to Android (next week, we’re told) and BlackBerry (next month). And the service has three other high-profile startups on board at launch to help with the picture element: Instagram, Read More

Foursquare Launched on Symbian with Homescreen Widget
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Wed, 13 Oct 2010 19:40:21 UTC +00:00
After some development work from Nokia, location-based social network Foursquare has launched a Symbian application, complete with a home screen widget which displays the latest check-ins by your friends. Now Symbian users can check in to locales and share that spot with friends, as well as write up tips, line up to-dos, and create new venues where there weren’t any before. For those uninitiated with the check-in craze, Foursquare uses your phone’s GPS to determine nearby locations (stores, restaurants, businesses, etc.), and allows you to virtually check-in at those places, as well as share said check-in to Facebook, Twitter, and other Foursquare friends. You can earn badges for checking-in in particular ways, or even become the “Mayor” of a business for checking-in most frequently there. Sometimes there are real-world discounts or perks, depending on the participation level of the business, but usually Mayorship is entirely superficial. It looks like this has Read More

Foursquare for BlackBerry Updated with Push Notifications
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Tue, 28 Sep 2010 23:13:27 UTC +00:00
Foursquare’s check-in application for BlackBerry has been updated to let you get pop-up notifications as soon as your friends check in to a location. There’s also a fresh round of bug squashes, UI improvements, and code optimizations, all of which are welcome. Foursquare’s presence here at the BlackBerry DevCon has been significant, with a check-in challenge that eventually offers attendees a snazzy exclusive badge and a t-shirt. For those unfamiliar, Foursquare detects your location through GPS, lets you announce where you are visiting to Facebook and Twitter with an archive of locations, and if a spot isn’t there, you can add it. Users can add tips to places (like “don’t get the shrimp”), or tack on to-dos for locations they want to visit. Metrics are in place that keep tabs on when and where you check in, which can result in special virtual badges earned for particular achievements. Gowalla, a competing Read More

Foursquare 2.0 for iPhone Splits Up To-Dos and Tips, Adds Web Button
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Tue, 21 Sep 2010 15:41:47 UTC +00:00
The Foursquare check-in app for iPhone was updated recently with a new way of handling To-Dos and Tips. In the past, the two were lumped together in the same tab, with subcategories separating the two. For those uninitiated, Tips are messages you leave behind at places you check-in to using a mobile app, while To-Dos act as reminders to check-in to locations you haven’t been to before. In order to give To-Dos even more visibility, they’ve introduced a new “Add to my Foursquare” button, which allows web visitors to instantly add a To-Do item for a location they’re visiting. In addition to providing location-based specials to users like usual, this is a great way for businesses to rope in mobile-savvy customers. You can see an example of the button in action over here at Eater, or if you would like to implement a Foursquare button on your own site, just find Read More
Foursquare 2.0 Goes Beyond The Check-In — By Reshuffling Old Features
Mini_discussion_bubble TechCrunch - Posted Mon, 20 Sep 2010 23:35:21 UTC +00:00
Today, Foursquare has announced the arrival of version 2.0 of their service. This version has been the subject of much speculation for several weeks, as everyone wants to know how Foursquare is going to keep their momentum alive. With Facebook Places now out in the wild, and slowly rolling out around the world, Foursquare is well aware they need to move beyond simply being a check-in service. So have they? As we suspected a couple months ago, there is a new emphasis on both Tips and To-Dos in the new version of Foursquare. Specifically, in the iPhone app, these features now have their own separate buttons for the first time. And on venue pages, it’s now easy to both add a tip or mark a venue as something you want to explore (to-do) later. Both of these features are somewhat interesting and could be useful, but unfortunately, neither are new. Both existed previously, Read More
Foursquare app gets a version bump

Being the geek that I am, I always have time to annoy my wife by checking into venues with Foursquare whenever we go somewhere. The free location-based social networking iPhone app gained even more awesomeness (their description, not mine) today with the release of version 2.0. What's new? A to-do list for organizing your explorations. You can search for a location, and then add it to your to-do list. This would be handy for reminding yourself about restaurants that friends have tipped you off to. To-dos can also be added via websites, if they embed the button on their page (think Instapaper for location-based to-dos). Another new feature is that friends, tips, and to-do items can now be displayed on a map, nice for figuring out where you were planning on going, where your friends have gone off to, and what you were going to do when you got there. Foursquare 2.0 for the iPhone Has Arrived

by When Facebook Places launched, Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley was quick to label Facebook’s location offering as generic. In his rebuttal statements on the competing service, Crowley also promised a completely new version of the iPhone app with functionality that would be like “Instapaper for the real world.” The wait for the new iPhone app is over — version 2.0 has arrived. In version 2.0 [iTunes link], Foursquare emphasizes Tips and To-Dos, which are now split up and given prominent placement in the application’s bottom navigation bar. The emphasis is not application specific, as Foursquare will now also connect the dots between web discovery and mobile activity. The goal is to encourage app users to look at Foursquare as a way to easily save the places they want to visit and store activities that might be of future interest. Foursquare drives this point home with a brand new “Add to My Read More

What's next for 'check-in' apps? - CNN.com
(CNN) -- Seth Priebatsch was at a burrito joint in Boston recently when a message popped up on his smartphone from an app called SCVNGR. If he opened the foil on the burrito ever so carefully and turned the wrapper into a piece of origami art -- and if he uploaded a picture of his creation to the app, the note said, then he would earn points toward a free burrito. Priebatsch thought: That might be fun. "I made a really weak origami crane, because I'm no origami artist myself," he said, but "it got me closer to unlocking a free burrito, which was cool." SCVNGR, which Priebatsch helped create, is one of the latest apps to build on top of the idea of a "check-in," that emerging term some tech-savvy people use to describe the act of using a GPS-enabled smartphone to share their whereabouts with friends. Increasingly, app developers Read More
Behind the Places That Facebook’s iPhone App Goes [Rant]
Mini_discussion_bubble iPhone Download Blog - Posted Fri, 20 Aug 2010 12:00:06 UTC +00:00
Continuing in my short lived residency here at iDB is my Friday rant that is usually based off a particular story in the week that rubbed me the wrong way. When we reported about Facebook adding GPS check in capabilities I knew my topic had been sealed. I will preface my outburst by informing you all that I am one of the few individuals I know who doesn’t have a profile in the world’s biggest social platform. I had one for less than a month and every lousy expectation I envisioned came to life. I have no bones to pick with users who have Facebook accounts. If I did I would have almost no one to talk to. My beef comes from the irresponsible undertones involved with the new Places feature embedded within the iPhone app. I have yet to hear a responsible or even reasonable explanation for desiring to participate Read More
Facebook “Places” An Update in Their iPhone App
Mini_discussion_bubble iPhone Download Blog - Posted Thu, 19 Aug 2010 14:57:49 UTC +00:00
Late Wednesday evening, Facebook added a location check-in feature to their hugely popular iPhone app. “Places” is the official title, and the social media kingpin is expected to be the eventual champion of such (GPS) location based utilities. Similar applications allow you to publicly announce your whereabouts, with Gowalla and Foursquare among the most popular. At least they were. The Washington Post is among the seemingly endless sources that report once a user “Checks In”, their location is broadcasted on both their personal and public feed. Security adjustments can be made within your profile to change just how known your want your movements to be. This seems certain to be a dagger to Foursquare and company, but Facebook’s approach doesn’t have the add-ons that other apps have. In Foursquare, you’re awarded various badges and even mayorships based on the frequency and uniqueness of your visits. Places seems to simply announce your position Read More
The 30 Best iPhone Apps So Far This Year
Mini_discussion_bubble TechCrunch - Posted Sat, 07 Aug 2010 18:12:54 UTC +00:00
Editor’s note: This guest post is written by Alex Ahlund, the former CEO and founder of AppVee and AndroidApps, which were acquired by mobile application directory Appolicious. About this time last year, he gave us his picks of the best iPhone apps of 2009 up until then, so we thought we’d make it an annual tradition. I’ve been involved in the iPhone app industry since it first began in 2008 and I have to say that it has come a long way. I’ve seen it grow from a meager launch of 500 applications in the App Store to currently over 225,000. In only two years, the industry has matured at hyperspeed. It spawned an entire ecosystem to support it from a multitude of news and editorial resources to developer engines, promotional services and ancillary niches. With over five billion app downloads and a billion dollars at stake, it’s no surprise that Read More
Making the switch to Apple? Get the perfect setup

With the undeniable popularity and success of the iPhone 4 (despite the antenna debacle), iPad, and ever-increasing Mac sales, Apple is gaining customers faster than ever. If you're thinking about making the switch, this could be your perfect setup. Component one: iPhone 4 Now in its fourth iteration, Apple's iPhone has forever changed the mobile phone landscape by thrusting touch-screen technology to the tips of every tech geek's tongue and every consumer's wish list. Despite its early and somewhat overblown issues, iPhone 4 has had record-setting sales. With the exception of the complaints from a vocal minority regarding its antenna, critics love the iPhone 4. Think of iPhone 4 as your mobile communications component in this setup. With it, you can send text messages; make calls; send e-mail, instant messages, and tweets; update Facebook; and check in with Foursquare. Of course, you can play games and download other apps to the Read More

We’re still keeping our eye out for great iOS 4 apps that take advantage of the new APIs and features available to developers under iOS4. We’ve found a couple more good ones to share with you guys, and as always, if you see any good ones, drop ‘em in the comments so we can check them out too! Even though Foursquare has already received a general update for iOS4, it seems they’re still adding new features. Along with several needed bug fixes, they’ve added support for in-app sms and e-mail as well as more support for iPhone 4 retina display. I was pretty disappointed in Foursquare for quite a while as far as the GPS refreshing and multitasking but it appears this version fixed most of my complaints. The Traveling Cows: Our Newly Addiction : Foursquare's badges
Mini_discussion_bubble The Traveling Cows - Posted Thu, 08 Jul 2010 00:00:00 UTC +00:00
For those who social media freak like us might be familiar with this Location Based social media networking. Foursquare is very addictive. I joined on April 2010 and unlocked my first badge here then Hubby also joined a few days later, unlocked his first Newbie badge here. At first we played for fun, made a few new places in town. By that time not many players yet amongst our friends so we were like having many places as our teritories. Foursquare lets user become a Mayor if we frequently check ins at particular places. Users should "check-in" or "Shout" at venues using a mobile website, text messaging or a device-specific application for BlackBerry, iPhone, Android or Palm. Our check ins then awarded points and sometimes we unlocked cool "badges" depends on venues, times or how many check ins we have to do to get a particular badge. The collection of their Read More

OK the truth is: this isn’t a real breakup from micro-blogging 140 characters or less, just a simple break for me to have some space, to explore, to let my Blackberry sew it’s royal oates with another downloadable app. I could go into an “it’s not me, it’s you” diatribe, but after a while, I’d lose track of the fact that I found something sort of new, and it’s Foursquare. This weekend was all about getting acquainted with the new location-based blogging community on Foursquare. Actually it was just Monday when I succumbed to downloading Foursquare to my Blackberry. All it took was a New York Magagzine article about the new wave of tech upstarts to seduce me into thinking Read More

Foursquare for webOS Update Gets Sneak Peeked

One of the Foursquare for webOS developers has gotten a little excited about the next release, and decided to share some of the new features on the way.  On top of the usual bug fixes and UI optimizations, you’ll be able to refresh the friend feed and nearby listings with a forward swipe, attach videos to check-ins and shouts, live search results for venues which pop up as you type, and there will be a new navigation menu, pictured above. Foursquare is a popular mobile check-in application that lets you share your location with friends on a place-by-place basis. You get completely frivolous (but fun) rewards for checking in regularly to the same spots, and if the locations aren’t in Foursquare’s database, you can add them yourself. Foursquare plugs in to Twitter and Facebook, so you don’t have to nag your friends to sign up to another social network in order Read More

Foursquare 1.8: locaties beter vindbaar, dubbele locaties melden

First look: Rally Up, a social network for real friends
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Thu, 01 Apr 2010 20:15:00 UTC +00:00
I have to admit it: I like location-based social networking apps. Probably my favorite to date has been FourSquare, which I love because I'm the "Mayor" of a couple dozen locations. But this type of app isn't for everyone. My wife, for example, says that she thinks they're a bit too much like stalking (to which I replied, "there's an app for that"), so she won't use them. Rally Up is a new location-based social network (that's so awkward to say) that has several features that may sway my wife. The free app for iPhone, and soon for iPad, lets you set granular friend preferences. What does that marketing speak mean? Easy -- you set your real friends to "real" on a slider, which means that they get full notifications (i.e., "Steve is at the Blue Bonnet Café) and their check-ins show up in your feed. The next slider setting is Read More

Foursquare has just recently began to take off as a social media service. The service competes with the likes of Gowalla, Yelp and more. As it continues to gain popularity, we are seeing it offered via a variety of different mediums. For those of you who aren't familiar with the service, it is a fairly simple concept. The idea is to provide users with a way to interact with the places they go and share experiences with the community around them. When a location is reached, users can "Check In" to that location and record it. This will earn users points and if a person visits the location more than anyone else, they will become the mayor of that location. The iPhone app offers all the features one would expect from the service. Users can check in to various locations which are listed using the gps on the phone. Users can Read More

Foursquare, one of the most popular location-based social networking apps out there, has just launched an overhauled version of their iPhone app on the AppStore. With the new app in hand, SXSW attendees will be able to more easily boost their Foursquare street-cred. The new Foursquare app sports a completely redesigned UI to commemorate the app’s return to SXSW, where it first debuted last year. Gowalla v2.0 first and foremost features a new design that is said to be more readable and usable than ever.  You are also now allowed to upload photos after checking in and browse photos from friends, and checkins can now be commented on.  Speaking of checkins, you are now able to come back and add checkin messages for instances where you have skipped typing a checkin message because you just didn’t have enough time. Other Gowalla 2.0 features include: Gowalla‘s competition, Foursquare, also received a bit of a facelift today in v1.7, featuring quite a bit more color and a lot less black.  But unlike Gowalla, the rest of Foursquare‘s additions are fairly minimal, only including faster and more Read More

Yelp updates with check-ins, Foursquare not happy
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Wed, 20 Jan 2010 01:30:00 UTC +00:00
Location-based social networking on the iPhone is a tough game to play, apparently -- the popular Yelp app [iTunes link] has recently updated to version 4.0, and along with a friend finder, hooks to Facebook and Twitter, and an updated version of their augmented reality Monocle feature, they've added the ability to "check-in" from locations around whatever city you live in. When you visit a great pizzeria, for example, you can send a ping out that says you've been there along with what you think of it. This replicates the functionality of another app, Foursquare [iTunes link], which is steadily building up its own social network prowess (you may have seen the "mayor of" tweets lately -- that's Foursquare doing its thing, either on iPhone or through a desktop interface). In this case, the imitation isn't appreciated -- Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley tore apart Yelp's new feature in a recent tumblr Read More

I am really getting into the whole location-based check-in concept. There are several tools out there but my favorite right now is foursquare. The app and service is free, it scans Twitter, Facebook and your iPhone’s address book for friends. This makes finding friends that use foursquare easy. You have weekly leaderboards to compete with friends and a todo list of places to check out. Give foursquare a try! [Free - iTunes Read More
Foursquare Now Seeing A Check-In Each Second

The following day, they saw the biggest day in terms of usage ever, apparently. This past Saturday, Foursquare was averaging more than a check-in a second, according to this tweet from the official account. Some quick math tells me that this means they must have seen over 86,000 check-ins in that 24 hour span. While Foursquare hasn’t publicly stated how many users they have, our best guess is Read More

Foursquare’s Facebook Integration Now Live for iPhone Users
Mini_discussion_bubble Mashable - Posted Fri, 18 Dec 2009 20:54:39 UTC +00:00
by Earlier in the week, we broke the news that Foursquare had turned on the ability to automatically share check-ins, mayorships and unlocked badges with Facebook. At the time, the functionality only worked for mobile web users or BlackBerry and Android devices, but that’s no longer the case. Now iPhone users who update to the latest version of the app — version 1.4.3 — can share their Foursquare activity on Facebook too. You won’t notice the new functionality in the app itself; the Facebook sharing is actually enabled and configured from the settings panel of the Foursquare website. The process is no different than for the other devices, so you’ll need to allow Facebook to access and publish your Foursquare activity, and once you do, you can choose to share check-ins, mayorships and unlocked badges. The Week In iPhone Apps: Google Who ? [IPhone Apps]

Still, with this? Well, luckily there's plenty of other stuff to tide us over until the Google Voice fiasco resolves itself. Like zombies! And weddings, and exercise, and soundscapes, and urban art, and political activism, and jokes, and, and, and... The Onion Microfiche Reader: It's from the Onion, so it's pretty much guaranteed not to be not funny, but! For all the neat microfilm-esque presentation, this thing doesn't actually have any articles—just a bunch of those jokes-in-a-headline that the Onion is so good at. Still entertaining though. A dollar. Foursquare: Now you can see who else is checked in at a given venue, who the current mayor is, collect nearby Tweets, and enjoy better Google Maps integration in this extremely strange, strangely popular, highly addictive territorial app. Free. Preview: Foursquare’s New iPhone App Ups The Social Ante
Mini_discussion_bubble TechCrunch - Posted Fri, 11 Sep 2009 21:07:51 UTC +00:00
While Foursquare’s apps on other platforms (Android, BlackBerry, and WinMo) have been garnering most of the buzz recently, the company remains firmly committed to the only app it developed entirely in-house: It’s iPhone app. In fact, it recently submitted a new version, 1.4, to the App Store for approval. I’ve had a chance to play with an ad-hoc build for the past couple of weeks, and it’s great. It significantly improves two key areas: Usability and its social layer. See Who Else Is Here The most important new feature of Foursquare 1.4 is that it now allows you to see who is checked into any venue at any given time. While previously, you had to rely on your main “Friends” tab to see a stream of where people were checked in, now you can click on any venue, click on the new “People” tab, and see who is there. Problems, Seriously Lacking Full Cities List

If the app worked as it should, and they were able to grow the program to include more cities, then the app would be fun. But launching the system with so many missing metro areas and the bugs in the app leave me wondering if they have enough resources to make the most of this ingenious idea. Hopefully someone with some know how and skill can turn this into something great.
Doesn't work!

First app that I have downloaded that is completely nonfunctional. Same problems as others are having below. Don't bother downloading until it is more stable. For now, this app is worthless.
Usability problems
banifa 1.0 stars
The app idea is promissing, however a very poor job on usability prevents it from being useful. The app does not allow gps positioning and ask you where you are! Interesting concept. I will uninstall for now.
Totally useless, buggy, unstable
Bhcbhcbhc 1.0 stars
It deleted my friends and city list spontaneously and wouldn't let me add my city (NYC) back in. So I reinstalled and now it won't even let me log in. And the other day it said my friend was in Brooklyn when she was in Midtown Manhattan and she couldn't change it. What a useless piece of crap. Good idea but EXECUTIONFAIL.
Promising idea, non-functioning app.
BigDougSchmidt 1.0 stars
Besides the fact that the app is not intuitive, and makes you think you're limited to the major cities (it does work in other places outside if the listed cities, but via manual entry)...it does not let me check in! This app does not work. And it's a shame because the idea is really great, the notion of "competition", the sharing of your favorite places, letting your friends know where you are...but alas, execution fail. I'll be patient for one more release, and then I'm putting you in the .com deadpool.

This app is useless. Downloaded it only because TechCrunch covers it far too much. And had to see what it was about. Fadsquare.
Great potential
quackbot 3.0 stars Version: 1.3.1
This could be a killer app. There are many things I'm sure the developers already know to add and bugs to fix. The one I will mention : need to open up social aspect. The fact that you can only add people you 'know' is pretty worthless. There's real value in the virtual community. If I see a tip from a user I don't 'know' but like his tips, let me add him. Leave it up to him to accept or not.
Bombs on 3.0
jawngee 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
Can't add new places which limits the usefulness of the app. Looks fun though.
Don't waste your time.
Arbitrary Plaid 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
I want to like this app, but I can't. The app frequently crashes on iPhone 3gs. The check in procedure never lets me check in where I am. And the tips offered are inane. I miss dodgeball, guys.

Crashes on iPhone 3.0
Only-Child 2.0 stars Version: 1.2
Potentially fun app, but often crashes when locating and *always* crashes when trying to add a new place. It's also missing a bunch of places in Boston, so that's not really a good combination with the crashing. Hopefully a 3.0 version will be out soon.
Could be awesome, but it's not.
Doc Pop 2.0 stars Version: 1.2
This little app had a lot of potential, but is choke full of tiny annoyances. One of the biggest being that there are certain things that can only be done on the iPhone app and others that can only be done on your computer. For instance, if you are out at a new restaurant and try to log in, you might find the restaurant is listed as a venue... you can't add the venue from the app, you have to log in online... which is extremely annoying to do without a computer... but if you create the venue from your computer, you have to go back to the iPhone app to log in. What?! You would think it should be easier to add check in locations to their service for other users to enjoy.
Enjoying the App
smichaels 4.0 stars Version: 1.2
Must say that during a big conference, this App was fun and helped me meet up with people and all that good stuff. Probably not as good when I am in a town by myself, but great for large groups.
Frequent crashes after reset
Frozenwords 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
I usually take the reviews citing frequent crashes with a grain of salt, but this app is seriously under-developed. It's free, so whatever.

Brilliant idea, terrible iPhone app
jnolen 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Foursquare is awesome -- I wish I could actually play the game. But this is the crappiest, crashiest iPhone app I've ever downloaded. I'll try again when they release the next version.
A fun way to see your Peeps' activity

#1 utility for cities
NateW 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
No way to live in NYC (or any other supported city) without it. Sweet Twitter integration. Get your whole crew on it and you'll rule your city.
Great Concept, Add More Cities!
xiape 4.0 stars Version: 1.0
I live in the 5th (or 6th, depending on to whom you listen) largest city, Phoenix, and we're not on the service. In our neighboring city, Tempe, we are home to a university of more than 60,000 students. It would be nice to be included, especially when cities whose potential nightlife isn't nearly as good. Please add us and other great cities that have so far been left out. I'll be happy to use the app whenever I'm in a city that's currently served, but I'd love to use it all the time! Great app, & I'm very much looking forward to its expansion.
Confusing UI and pointless features
Mom on the Go 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
I tried very hard to love this app but it is one frustration after the next. The developers clearly rushed this out.
great for social butterflies and barflies alike
j_guns 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
great for meeting up with friends (or avoiding foes). no need to set "quiet" hours as there are no pesky text messages every time a friend checks in. handy for locating businesses nearby, which is nice if you're outside your regular neighborhoods. earning badges on this app is far more fun that it was in the scouts!
If you know what's up
court3 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is the app that turns going out into a HIGHLY COMPETITIVE adventure and a wealth of new experiences. It also helps you see who of your friends are nearby. Will it be banned? I hope so. THEN I CAN WIN. At life. This version is fairly basic but I'm convinced it will be exponentially better as time progresses!
Not interesting...

Easy easy easy
adamjackson 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
