Apps, accessories and more for Father's Day
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Thu, 16 Jun 2011 20:30:00 UTC +00:00
It's close to Father's Day here in the US. Hopefully you've got the perfect gift planned. Perhaps you splurged on the ideal man cave, or you went less extreme and bought an iPhone, iPad or new Mac for the awesome father in your life. If, however, you're still scrambling for gift ideas, here are a few of our suggestions. There are several apps and accessories geared toward outdoor sports. The GPS Kit iPhone App (US$19.99) was just featured in Time Magazine and has a number of excellent outdoor uses, especially if Dad's into hiking, biking or geocaching. Bikers can pair it with an iPhone bike mount, such as this one from Bracketron ($39.95). For the golfer, pair a golf bag mount with Golfscape GPS Rangefinder (currently on sale for $9.99). Golfscape just won an Apple Design Award and allows you to view distances on more than 37,000 golf courses around the Read More

Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Wed, 08 Jun 2011 04:30:00 UTC +00:00
The 2011 Apple Design Award winners have been announced at WWDC. Although the Mac got left off the radar last year, in 2011 Apple's chosen to recognize greatness in all of its platforms. Winners get a MacBook Air, iPad 2, iPod touch and a snazzy trophy. They also get heaps of free coverage from sites like us, which means all of these apps can likely look forward to massive upticks in sales over the next week. The winners are below. For apps we've covered before at TUAW, we've got links to our reviews/first looks. For the few apps we haven't covered yet, we've linked you directly to the App Store. Many thanks to Steve Streza, who live-tweeted the results from the event. Congratulations to all the winners! Enjoy your well-deserved spoils. Read More

Golfscape uses augmented reality to help iPhone 4 owners get around golf courses
Mini_discussion_bubble IntoMobile - Posted Fri, 16 Jul 2010 07:22:17 UTC +00:00
Shotzoom Software is out with its latest golf app for the iPhone – Golfscape. This time they target the users only, while at the same time including augmented reality into the mix. In other words, with Golfscape loaded on your shiny handset, you’ll browse around the field looking through the camera lens and eventually follow the arrows that are shown on top of the camera view. Alternatively, you can click on the dots to get more information about some specific target. There are more than 35,000 golf courses worldwide supported with up to 40-targets per hole, meaning you will be able to use Golfscape just about anywhere. Shotzoom Software’s latest work builds on top of the success of their earlier apps – Golfshot: Golf GPS, which is the top grossing golf app in the AppStore; and top selling golf instructional app, Golfplan, with victorious Ryder Cup Captain and 2010 British Open Read More

WOW Can't wait for 2.0
mmmm1 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
If you told me this morning, that I would cough up $20 today, for a brand new unproven app, I would have laughed in your face, and asked what you really wanted. After seeing the email, going to the website, and combined with my great experience with Golfshot GPS, what the heck and I pulled the trigger. I can say, Golfscape 1.0 is a great start. Golfscape is a combination of rangefinder/gps in one simple app. I had a chance to use it on my local course tonight, and it gives a very different experience than GolfShot GPS or a SkyCaddie. The documentation is a little scarce as of this review, so there is not alot of guidence on how to use the controls (I did figure out "centering" by the 4th hole), what to do with the program after shots (ex: do I sleep the program, or let it run) Overall, it's a great start to a unique product. This program was run on a iPhone 4. Pro- Different interface than most conventional GPS units, great for visual person Con- iphone screen can be hard to see in bright sun/with sunglasses, no scoring interface w/GolfShot (not yet), camera does get HOT! Lack of documentation, but will probably be released soon.
You CANNOT keep score in this app

It's lame to have to switch to golfshot on EVERY hole to enter your score!
Amazing!

I've never seen anything like this before, what a great app! What a fun way to see exactly where all the hazards are located and to visualize my next shot. Very helpful!
coolest golf app
golf 4 life 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
used this app this morning playing on my local course and it works so easily...just point your phone to the hole and get all the distance readings you need. it also tells you which way the doglegs are and where exactly hazards are located - no more blind shots with hazard! awesome app. very impressed and happy!
whoa!!!
