Apple has released a brand new iPhone 3GS television ad titled “Avid,” which showcases apps containing a common theme, and in this case the theme is sports. This ad is similar to Apple’s previous ads that contain the usual tagline of “There’s an app for that.” The ad features apps that are geared towards avid sports fans. The apps featured in the ad include: GolfShot: Golf GPS ($29.99): A GPS range-finder with over 15,000 worldwide golf courses. MLB.com At Bat 2009 ($9.99): Offers 1-2 live streaming MLB games per day, along with audio streaming, in-game video highlights, condensed game recaps, and live graphical pitch-by-pitch coverage. TouchSports Tennis ’09 ($.99): An accessible 3D tennis game that features a variety of characters and courts, and touch and accelerometer-based controls. The ad is embedded below, but you can also view this and all of Apple’s other ads on their website.

By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Aug 25, 2009 | Apple has begun airing another in their long line of “App for That” iPhone ads, this time with “Avid”, targeting sports fans. The ad shows off: Apple typically releases these spots in batches, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more, and if you see any, let us know. Fantastic App
jsdoyle
Version: 1.2
I'm redoing my original review. Still five stars! I first reported that the app would drain the phone battery after about 9 holes, requiring a battery backup device. What I failed to mention was that I kept the phone on the entire time. If you do that you will definately need more power.
BUT! I've played twice now where I put the phone to sleep between shots and it easily survives 18 holes on a charge. That is the trick.
I can easily check email and take calls too without wording about the battery. I still have my backup. Just in case. I'd recommend one of those even when you aren't golfing.
I love the gps, scoring, and stats. The update now will keep stats on all of holders in your group. Not sure if I want to but that can be turned off.
Anyone want to buy my Sky Caddy?
Amazing app

This application is by far the best golf rangefinder available. I have used all the laser rangefinders in addition to all the gps gadgets on the market.
Very impressive

Version: 1.0
This program is easy to use and doesn't interfere with phone usage. I am still trying to discover all the features but for score tracking and simple stats such as putts, greens in regulation and the like it's great. I own a Golfbuddy GPS and it doesn't compare. No problems with battery life or on-course visibility. I'm very impressed and am happy to have this app.
Incredible software here... MUST HAVE for a golfer who owns iPhone 3G or 3GS

I just downloaded Golfshot today after having downloaded ViewTi earlier this week (use ViewTi for one round) - this software is incredible. The interface is sweet and intuitive... the GPS yardages are reliably accurate.... and the scorecard and stack tracking will undoubtedly help you improve your game. I dare to say, within the same round. Knowing what u are doing well and where u are coming up short in a round is critical to improvement. This app easily lets u see those things, keep your score, and helps you dial in your yardages.
Everything You Want - And Great Service Too!
Chartwiz
Version: 1.0
What a GREAT app! This stands up to any $300 "device" that fellow golfers paid for. The distances are always within 2-4 yards (when I need more than that, I will quit my day gig). The GPS measures to front, back, mid-green and bunkers from anywhere (even 10 miles away) and the aerial view lets me play with "what if" views on my next shot. The stats and scorecard are a bonus - it can automatically track fairways hit, putts, bogies, pars, etc. Best of all - the service is fast and personal. My course added new tees last year, so I scanned a new card and the Golfshot people updated everything within hours! Plus they sent a link to a great pdf user guide with picture instructions to help get the most out of it. This is a great find!
GolfShot The Best
Lon
Version: 1.0
This is a great application. I have reviewed them all and GolfShot is
the Best. The accuracy of all GPS applications is only as good as the
iPhone GPS system itself, and this one, like all others, can be a
little slow at times in determining yardages, depending on the
availability and responsiveness of satellites. These will never be as
quick as dedicated GPS units, but this one seems to be fairly accurate
most of the time when compared with golf cart or hand held GPS
systems. However, in my opinion, the User Interface and presentation
of GolfShot sets this one apart from all the other apps.
First, the yardage readings in the app are large and clear and easy to
read without having to put on the dreaded reading glasses while
playing golf. This is actually one of my primary criteria in looking
at either an iPhone-based GPS or a stand alone unit. The primary
yardage readout is at the top of the app so I can just rest my iPhone
in a drink holder and it is always easily visible. Even the secondary
yardage readouts are large enough to read without having to pull out
glasses and squint to see them.
The TruePoint Positioning System is a wonderful feature and actually
works well with a friend’s 2G iPhone that doesn’t even have GPS built in. It is very useful for determining the best layup shot on doglegs and holes with other major hazards. And the fact that the app allows you to scroll through a fairway and even enlarge the view is a feature not included in many other apps. The Last Shot yardage function is also simple, easy to use and easy to read.
The scoring system is simple and easy to use while on the fly in
between holes and provides all the information points that a golfer
could want – or more. The resulting scorecard and automatic stats feature are very detailed, though
it doesn’t allow for any data reporting for playing partners other
than score. This does seem a bit odd since the data entry on each hole requires the entry of putts for each player.
The GolfShot Technical Support Group has been very responsive to not only adding or updating existing courses but also to other questions
regarding the operation of the app or to issues in the operation of
the app. Their website also offers a fairly detailed User Guide to
assist in understanding all the available features. As with many apps there are always issues, but in my experience a quick response by technical support to questions that come up is indicative of an app
that I want to stick with.
LOVE IT!!!!

Have been considering buying a golf GPS device for a number of months but unsure about shelling out $300+ for a good make (plus yearly costs for courses or individual course cost to download). Decided to buy this for $30, and if it was no good then buy a 300+ golf GPS system. Today used it for the first time on a course I've never played before and could not be happier. Yardages seemed pretty much spot on (stood on sprinkler heads and was within +-3 yards every time) and the information was more than enough for me (high 80's golfer). If I was a scratch golfer or a low single digit player then a 300+ device may provide additional information that was useful but for me knowing how far to the front and back edge of the green (they don't put sprinkler heads where I hit the ball sometimes, lol) and how far to clear the bunkers was more than enough. I varied between leaving the phone on and also turning the Iphone off between shots and it barely took 5-10 seconds every time I turned it back on to realign with the satellites. My phone was fully charged at the beginning of the round and I had plenty of charge at the end. Based on prior reviews I checked the courses in my area (Dallas) and it covered every course I have ever played and would probably every play, and I play a lot of municipal courses. I'm unsure about these reviews saying it was off by 50 yards, lack of courses, and time to acquire a satellite, it worked so great then I'm tempted to believe these reviews might be written by people working for Golf GPS makers selling them for 300+. I'm really happy that I saved $270, I've had my Iphone for 3 weeks and as long as I own the phone its going to be hard to believe I'm going to find a better application.
Awesome Golf GPS App!

I've owned a SkyCaddie for the past 2 years and this app blows it out of the water! Used it for the first time this past weekend and it was everything I expected and more. To be able to get distances off of any point on any hole is truly amazing and so helpful. The scorecard part of the app makes it over the top! I can only imagine what further updates would bring.
Golfshot way better than ViewTI
JSN88
Version: 1.0
Just used Golfshot today for the first time. Up until today I was a ViewTI user. This app is better than ViewTi in almost every way. I put in a request to add my home course. After a few days (over the holiday weekend) it was up and running. The interface is intuitive and easy to operate. The GPS maps align automatically in the screen unlike other apps which require you to rotate the phone. Having the layup distances is very cool. Measuring distances to obstacles is easy. Scores are easily entered and the stats are great. I had strong signal throughout the round and the GPS was dead on to the markers on my course. This app is a great buy.
Excellent

I use to use the skycaddie 2.5, but after today caddie is heading to eBay!
This app is near perfect! Unbeliveable shot distance options and distances.
It's very quick, great graphics too.
Only used half my battery today, but turned off 3g, Bluetooth, and wifi but had nearly 50% left afterwards.
THE SCORECARD FEATURES ARE A DREAM, and very quick to add your every hole info! I love all of the stats!
Worth every penny! I highly recommend. I had it up and running on my first try, it even knew where I was playing when I started the round today.
Worth $300!!!

Version: 1.0
I purchased and used Golfshot yesterday and it was everything I wanted in a portable golf GPS. It showed a static picture of the hole I was playing so there was no waiting for data transfer like other applications. Click on the golf ball icon when you are teeing off and it will track how far your drive was when you arrive at your ball. The scorekeeping was easy. I just made it through 18 holes on a fully charged phone (turn off WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth before you start).
Unbelievable!!

Version: 1.0
I was very skeptical when I downloaded this b/c $30 is not cheap for just an iPhone app but then I thought that a skycaddie can cost upwards of $200-$300 so it made sense. I found all 5-7 courses that I usually play around my house and after trying the application at one of those I was amazed at how good the interface is and how accurate the information was. I compared the yardages to a guy in my foursome with a skycaddie and the numbers matched up every time. Very happy with this app and would STRONGLY recommend downloading it (just make sure the courses you play are listed).. Well done developers!
wow golf shot

This is my 1st review. I usually do not bother. I had to brag about this. I played a round with a guy who had bought a
Just as good as skycaddie
Boilerman99
Version: 1.0
This is by far the best bang for your buck when it comes to range finders. I golfed with a buddy that used the skycaddie sg5 and the numbers where basically identical when it came to yardage. The interface is clean, intuitive and easy to use. Definitely easy on the battery life of the phone too! I played an entire 18 and still had 50% battery left. For any seriours golfer out there that can't justify dropping 500 bucks on a single use device, this is your solution!!! I love it.
OUTSTANDING Customer Service!
Bursky1069
Version: 1.0
I purchased this app July 1st. When I went to use it at my home course, I was notified that GPS mapping was not available. After just spending $30, I was quite disappointed. The next day, I contacted Golfshot via their website, explained my dilemma, made a mapping request, and five hours later my course was mapped, downloaded, and ready to go. The people at Golfshot "get it." They understand that customers are their most valuable asset. Above and beyond the fact that their software is great - it's my customer service experience that leads me to give them 5 stars.
Excellent bordering on Outstanding.
abess1115
Version: 1.0
Used this for the first time today and nearly all of the features worked. Very intuitive program, the only disappointment was not being able to view the layout of the holes on the course I played, even though the course was supported by the program. It did provide yardages for each hole and the GPS function work very well, but it could not produce a picture of each hole because it said the image quality was not good enough. I have other programs that provide pictures of the fairways and greens, so I'm not sure why it's such a challenge for Golfshot...perhaps something to address in a future update. Other than that minor complaint, I have nothing but praise for the program--I play 18 holes and still had approximately 1/2 battery life.
The best golfing app I have seen...
Gardening Golfer
Version: 1.0
My son and I were going to play a local course today and before we went out I searched iTunes for a decent golf GPS app. I found Golfshot, and purchased immediately. The app was far better than we expected on the course, giving yardage to just about everything, and the satellite view was awesome. The scoring piece was great too! As the author of the book "Gardening for Golfers", I am going to recommend this app to all my readers. Bravo!
10 star app

Version: 1.0
Works much better than I expected. It wasn't hard to convince my buddies to get this app.
future of the rangefinder
KimKnockers
Version: 1.0
This is an amazing app. Say goodbye to the $400 rangefinders. Golfshot is the future of rangefinder. The ability to customize the layups to the clubs in my bag is really great.
Best iphone golf app so far...
jeblis
Version: 1.0
This is a really nice golf app and exceeds the functionality of dedicated golf gps units. It has a lot of courses, arial views and the accuracy was in line with the GPS unit on our golf cart (it won't know the pin placement hough). The interface makes it easy to quickly navigate and record your scores. It keeps a bunch of statistcs and will email you your scorecard after the round. I would like to see the stats also integrated into the app (right now it takes you to the website). Also it would be nice if the recorded distance/par numbers were on the first screen for a hole, not the second.
Was skeptical and then amazed
Honch5
Version: 1.0
Most apps fall short of what you think they will be capale of. Golfshot did not. Not only is the interface very easy to use and the statistical data interesting, their customer service is top notch. I submitted several courses and all were uploaded within days. When there was a problem with one of my uploads, they fixed it quickly with a great explanation of what happened. The accuracy of the GPS is perfect with a good signal and battery drain is not as bad as I expected This is the most impressive app I've downloaded. Very Impressed
Accurate

Version: 1.0
The GPS works pretty darn good. It's great because I've been using a Skygolf for a couple years, and now I don't need it anymore. Ebay anyone? It has about twice as many hazards too.
Amazing App!! Cut 3G,WiFi and BT to sbattery.
Slotty
Version: 1.0
I just bought it today and used it for the first time. There were also 2 other GPS systems in my foresome which cost soo much more then this and it was accurate almost to the yard.
The only feedback is to make sure you turn off 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth or you will be going through battery very quickly.
Overall it is the best GPS golf program I have used.
BETTER THAN SG5!!!
Rsgolfnut
Version: 1.0
I am AMAZED! I own an SG5 and it will be on Ebay tonight. The bonus is I'll make 10x what I paid for this app that is BETTER than the SG5. The aerial views are great, scoring system easy and detailed, and course selection as good as SG5! I keyed in my par after finishing 18 and was amazed that my detailed scorecard was instantly emailed to me! I was a skeptic, but now I'm a believer. BUY IT...well worth it and what a bonus for golfers with iPhones. AWESOME job on this app folks...keep up the great work!
Amazing product and customer support!!!
Dpolhamus
Version: 1.0
This product works exactly as advertised. I really like that the maps are preloaded and don't need to be downloaded as you play like some of the others. The scorecard and stats are great as well. A++ on customer support. I had an issue with my local course and it was corrected within hours! Definitely worth the price.
Hands-Down Best Golfcourse App for iPhone
pd_denver
Version: 1.0
I've used several other rangefinder appliances and devices which cost $99-$499. While they do a good job, this app does all of that; in many cases, it does more. The database of courses has every one I've ever heard of in the Denver area, plus dozens I had to look up on a map and it loads them quickly (sync time is ~15secs) on the initial setup.
Not for the midwest.
jeff630
Version: 1.0
This app only covers 17 courses in the entire state of Iowa!! What a joke. I know it is my own fault for not checking closer beforehand, but with 15,000 advertised courses, I would have imagined the larger courses in Iowa on which I play would have been covered. It also did not cover a course I just played in Fayetteville yesterday. Not much good if you can't even use it.
Confused and Disappointed
oneoldhickory
Version: 1.0
I bought this app because it looks nice and the description sounds like just the app I need. But when I tried using the app, all I get 2000 something yards while standing at the tee. There is something seriously wrong here and I can't find instructions on how to use it or set it up to work right. They seriously need to give us some instructions and fix the yardage problem. If this isn't fixed, I want a refund!
Good but not great
Ross Dillon
Version: 1.0
A bargain compared to $300 dedicated devices and has yardages spot on. Ability to customize layup clubs is great. Several features keep this from being perfect:
HANDS DOWN the best golf GPS!!!

Version: 1.0
I hardly write reviews for apps, but felt compelled to write one for this program. It is the BEST Golf GPS program out there! Keeps track of all your stats. The platform, feel, ease of use, pie charts for your stats, shot distance tracking.... all these things are combined into this.
Outstanding golf GPS app
Bluehen
Version: 1.0
I used Golfshot GPS 3 times over the weekend at 3 different courses, and it was always within 3 yards of the marked sprinkler heads. The scoring is very intuitive, and it e-mails you the scorecard at the end of the round which you can forward to the others in your group.
no more apps for me.

Doesn't have all courses available, after I loaded I found out it doesn't have two of the courses I play the most often. They should give a free trial week.

First off, the scorecard is really cool. I was surprised how quick it was to enter scores and the stats are more helpful to my game analysis than I expected. I thought I wouldn't use the scorecard since paper works just fine, but I think I'm hooked.
Finally!

I've been using the Golfshot scorecard app for the past month and have been waiting for the GPS app. Finally available! I've tested the GPS with the free Bethpage Black app and love it! These guys know golf.
Great app, needs some improvement.

GPS distance tracking works great, and makes this a bargain at $30. I was surprised at the number of courses the app covered. I live in rural NY and every course around me is found in the app. I would have given the app 5 stars but the stroke tracking is not intuitive.
Great App, but needs flyover function to be excellent
ofs1
Version: 1.0
I used this app today for the first time. The GPS was just as accurate as my Sky Caddie. It also gave more targets and hazards. The ability to customize lay up distances is very useful too. It was a little akward when the iphone timed out, but this is easily corrected. I had a few imes when the GPS was slow to respond. When they get the flyover module up and running this will be a 10!
