New Yorker, Gourmet iPad apps debut
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Mon, 27 Sep 2010 21:00:00 UTC +00:00
Two highly-anticipated iPad app releases have finally hit the App Store, and they're both magazines: The New Yorker and Gourmet Live. The New Yorker (free for the app, US$4.99 per issue) joins Gourmet Live as the latest magazine apps from publisher Condé Nast. The navigation is simple: tap anywhere on the screen to bring up the controls. You can quickly move between sections and articles with the scrubber or table of contents. For more leisurely reading, swipe between pages. One unique feature is how the magazine's famous cartoons are handled. Tap anyone to bring up a scrollable cartoon gallery. Plus, you can enter the regular caption contest right from within the app. It looks great, and we're eager to try it out. Meanwhile, ill-fated Gourmet Magazine has been reborn as the iPad app Gourmet Live (the current issue is free; there's no word of future pricing). As John Gruber points out, Read More

“The most common criticism is that the phone is slow after an upgrade”. Die erste Read More
iPad Mags: Amazing or Confusing?
Mini_discussion_bubble ReadWriteWeb - Posted Mon, 05 Apr 2010 17:21:07 UTC +00:00
One of the iPad's biggest selling points is its potential as an e-Reader. The included iBooks application and the optional downloadable Amazon Kindle app, for example, provide hundreds of thousands of books to read, all in a relatively standard format: swipe horizontally to flip a page. iPad magazines, however, are trying to be far more creative. As we've mentioned before, the new magazine-style applications include everything from video to music within their pages, plus interactive features and clickable ads. But one problem with these innovative new 'zines is that they each do their own thing, in their own way. While this early adopter applauds the innovations we're seeing on the iPad platform, the mainstream user may find the variations confusing. First up: the heavily praised interactive VIV mag, a standout among online newstand Zinio's offerings. Early demos were decidedly exciting. This wasn't text - it was a multimedia experience!

Der Condé Nast-Verlag arbeitet an iPad-Versionen seiner Magazine Wired, GQ, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker und Glamour.
