Gravity Hook is a flash game created by Adam Atomic and Danny Baranowsky way back in August 2008, and marks their first collaboration. It was based on a typing-tutor prototype game called Gravity Key, created by Arne Niklas Jansson. Arne gave his permission for Adam to develop a mouse-based version that scrolled onward and upward forever. The original Gravity Hook was created in 5 days on a very early version of what is now the flixel framework.
Gravity Hook received a lot of praise but also a lot of well-deserved complaints about the difficulty of play. Gravity Hook HD is a chance for Adam and Danny to revisit their first project with an extra year of experience and see if they have anything worthwhile to add. New graphics, new sound, new controls, and new gameplay make HD an entirely new game. For those hardcore fans of the old version, we've also included a special treat! New from the developer who brought us Canabalt [$2.99] and Gravity Hook HD [$2.99] comes SteamBirds [99¢/HD], an iOS port of the Flash game of the same name. Like Semi Secret's other games, SteamBirds takes an incredibly simple game mechanic and marries it with high quality presentation. At its core, SteamBirds is a turn-based strategy game featuring dogfighting aircraft from a top-down perspective. In an alternate history where a scientist accidentally discovers cold fusion in the mid-19th century, this new technology is used to create high-velocity steam-powered weapons on airplanes. These planes are then deployed into combat to complete the 21 missions in SteamBirds. Controlling your fleet of planes in SteamBirds is simple, and a nice tutorial during the first few levels explains all of the ins and outs. A small line sticks out from the front of your aircraft which represents the distance that each plane can travel per turn.

Semi Secret Software seem to be making a name for themselves as developers of games with great pixel art graphics, fantastic music, and high-score centric gameplay that in the case of Canabalt [$2.99] has kept me coming back for just one more try for the better part of a year now. Gravity Hook HD [$2.99] hit the App Store tonight, and provides much of what I loved about Canabalt, only in a vertical climb instead of a side scrolling run. In the game you play as a lovable little robot with a grappling hook who ascends to, well, wherever he's climbing to, by grabbing on to a randomized series of orbs, reeling himself in, then flinging to the next one. Unlike Canabalt which you could hand to anyone with it running on your phone and say "tap the screen to jump," Gravity Hook HD has a bit of a learning curve
