Best apps for tracking Hurricane Irene
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Sun, 28 Aug 2011 00:30:00 UTC +00:00
If you're in the path of Hurricane Irene and you haven't gone through the App Store already looking for the best sources of info on the storm, there are others who have done it for you. Information Week, Appolicious, and MSNBC's Technolog have all made lists of apps for various flavors of smartphones. Virtually all the lists of apps include the free Weather Channel App for iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, and Blackberry*. The application description doesn't clearly state if the free app (there's a paid version) has push notification for weather alerts, but the $3.99 Weather Channel Max app does include them. Aside from TWC's contributions, there's also the paid Hurricane for iPhone or Hurricane HD for iPad which shows up in multiple lists of suggested apps. You may want to try searching for an app for a TV station in your area; a lot of them have notifications for Read More
Apps to Track Hurricane Irene

As Hurricane Irene makes its way up the East Coast, you may be tempted to hunker by the TV or computer with your three-day supply of batteries, water and MREs to track the storm’s progress. But you can feel free to go out and test the tensile strength of your umbrella thanks to a number of phone and iPad apps that will keep you current on Irene’s position. At the top of the list has to be Hurricane Express, a recently released 99-cent iPhone app specializing in – what else? – hurricane tracking. With information from the National Hurricane Center, the app provides lots of raw data for wonky storm chasers, but also moving radar maps, maps showing the forecasted storm track, wind maps and others as well. You can also check the curated Twitter feed from weather organizations and weather pros, or check the news feed with bulletins and videos. Read More

Hurricane for iPhone allows users to track hurricanes in real time. Not only can you track speed, direction, pressure and your distance from a current storm, you can also browse historical hurricane data all the way back to 1851. Additionally, text bulletins give you all the latest warnings about storms in your area. Hurricane costs US$3.99. Hurricane HD is the iPad version of the Hurricane app. It's just been updated to version 2.0 and sports a major UI change with added features, including the ability to plot multiple storms (past and present) on interactive tracking maps, track hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones world wide, and it offers push notifications for newly formed storms. Hurricane HD 2.0 is $3.99. Read More

Apr 1st 2010 at 11:00AM Erica: Thank you for posting the video! To your question about price, Hurricane HD is listed at $3.99, the same price as our current Hurricane App for the iPhone and iPod Touch. For those wondering about updates to our original app Hurricane, we are working to get the update out as soon as possible. Mr. Applebaum: Thank you for the suggestions. We are looking into some of those already. Suggestion for the Developer: The tracking, beginning at about 2:00 would be much better if: 1) the current point, prior points, and forecast points were displayed with a different color that has greater contrast with the background (bright yellow, red or green). 2) you add a manual tracking option that uses the finger to move the points rather than buttons. 3) you add a loop play option in addition to the manual advancement. With options to set Read More
Hurricane Bill: How to Track it Online
Mini_discussion_bubble Mashable - Posted Mon, 17 Aug 2009 22:06:07 UTC +00:00
Felicia is fading, but Bill is building. Forming early Monday, Hurricane Bill sustained winds of 90 mph which are expected to climb to 110 mph — putting it in the running to become a major hurricane in the next couple of days. The first official hurricane in the Atlantic this season, Bill is some 1000 miles east of the Lesser Antilles and is expected to track west-northwest as it builds. Residents of Bermuda should monitor its progress closely, and East Coast residents might be in for some choppy surf as a result as well. Luckily there are umpteen ways to follow the progress of the storm as it develops. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite hurricane-chasing resources here, broken into sections for web-based resources, Twitter-specific sources and mobile hurricane tracking. MyFoxHurricane has been a staple of our hurricane tracking resources for its tracking maps, video footage, satellite photos, and live Read More
App Review: Hurricane Tracking for the iPhone
Mini_discussion_bubble The iPhone Blog - Posted Sat, 15 Aug 2009 16:27:56 UTC +00:00
By Chris Vitek, Saturday, Aug 15, 2009 | ) Hurricane [$3.99 - iTunes link] is a hurricane tracking app for the iPhone and iPod touch. Back when I lived in Florida, hurricanes were a yearly concern. Now that I am in Texas, they don’t play such a prominent role but they are still something to think about. Hurricane is an app designed to try to take away some of that concern. I have actually had this app for well over 4 months, but I wanted to wait till the middle of hurricane season so I could see it in action. And let me say, the app generally performs very well. The app starts off with a screen where you can select Atlantic or Pacific hurricanes, and then gives you a list of the active storms as well as completed storms. When you click on a storm, you can look at the Read More

Great App!
Groundpounder99 5.0 stars Version: 3.1
There dedication to customer service is just amazing and other app servicers should take a lesson. App has been updated twice now and each time it gets better even though it was great before. App is well worth the price and will not disapoint.
Best Hurricane App out there 
CKsilver007 5.0 stars Version: 3.1
Tons of helpful info. I've lived in Florida all my life and this app has everything a Hurricane Tracker could ask for. No more going to websites and searching for data. It is all in this app! Never crashes, always reset your iPhone when installing new software.
Problems
EM571234 1.0 stars Version: 3.1
It would be worth it if the map would stop crashing???!!!
Worth the money
Rockstar898 4.0 stars Version: 3.1
I live 1 mile from the ocean in SC and need a way to quickly keep track of storms during hurricane season. I bought the app yesterday to start tracking Bill, the first category 4 hurricane of the year. This app is great! The hurricane is laid over maps with pinch to zoom functionality, forward and reverse tracking details along its path, and fantastic radar and forecast images. It also shows distance to your current location using GPS. I would upgrade to 5 stars if it had push notification options and updated more than every 6 hours. But other than that, worth every penny - great job, Kitty Code!
Super!
Macatak911 5.0 stars Version: 3.1
Perfect! Beats surfing the web for hurricane info!
Absolutely the best!
Friendly Advice Guy 5.0 stars Version: 3.1
Has everything you need in one spot. If you live in Florida, this is a necessary app., unfortunately. But it affords some peace of mind to be able to quickly get the imagery, updates and projections. Thanks for the good work.
Awesome App
GoTGuy 5.0 stars Version: 3.1

I just started tracking Ana and this app gives me everything I need to know --without the talking heads and all of the hype on TV. Thanks so much for this wonderful app.
Excellent info
modeaux 5.0 stars Version: 3.1
I just got this a few minutes ago and found out everything I need to know. This is an all in one app love it! Haven't paid attention to the weather in a few days. Just now my phone was sending several text at one time so I decided to look at them. It was weather advisories. I had no idea there was a disturbance in the gulf. Got this app and found out everything I needed to know. Great app you won't be disapointed.
Where are the updates.
Ham73 2.0 stars Version: 3.1
There is a big storm out there now, the last update was at 4:00am 8/20/09, it is now 5:00pm 8/20/09 and no storm updates at all yet, is Bill still out there?
Really???
Daylight09 1.0 stars Version: 3.1
I recently bought the new myFoxHurricane app. After reading a couple of the most recent reviews, I thought I bought the wrong app because Kitty Code was mentioned.
WOW!! By far... best map weather app
hymquint 5.0 stars Version: 3.1
On track of the storm in seconds! I love weather apps with maps and detailed information... This is the best I have seen in a mobil app... Very easy to use, fast, no crash and easy to understand... Keep up the amazing work... CONGRATULATIONS! PS: With your experience with this app give us the regular weather... I will be your first customer...
Great App
parvenu51 5.0 stars Version: 3.1
I love this App as it has a lot of information about hurricanes along with all kinds of diiferent satilite maps of all regions of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Carr, Well worth the money,
Looks great and works perfectly, A must buy!!!
donnieanton 5.0 stars Version: 3.1
I think it's worth it especially if you live in Florida and look forward to College closing for storms :-)
Excellent app!
Enoch Soames 5.0 stars Version: 3.1
I gave the first version of this app a poor review, but the current version addresses all my concerns. The new map is both attractive and useful, the developer keeps adding features and overall the app is greatly improved. I appreciate the developer's responsiveness.
Beautiful
Stumpy67 5.0 stars Version: 3.1
The absolute best, most thorough way to keep track of storms. Tons of stats, radar and maps. A must have if you live in hurricane alley or just a storm junkie.
An amazing one-stop hurricane resource!
Grlnxtdore 5.0 stars Version: 3.1
All the information I need in one convenient location. Living south of New Orleans I have had the opportunity to see the aftermath of Katrina first hand. This app allows me to view all the data needed from reputable sources to make well informed decisions regarding the safety and security of family, property, and business at my convenience without having to view multiple websites or having to wait for the next weather update. If you live in an area that can be threatened by a hurricane, this app is a must have!
Great
wayne2626 5.0 stars Version: 3.0
Worth the money the best I have seen one any smart phone
Very Nice APP
John2008nj 5.0 stars Version: 3.0
This App will make Hurricane season more interesting. Super nice graphics, detailed information, a must have !!!
Thanks for the update!
jb1169 4.0 stars Version: 3.0
Love the 3.0 update with improved map features and more info on tropical activity/discussions!
A lot at one place
Xarp013 5.0 stars Version: 3.0
Usually you would need several apps or go to many www pages Well organized Thanks
We just need a hurricane
Marc Music 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
Best app there is!!!! Shows past storms, hours of entertainment!!
Great job!
Lizhopper2 5.0 stars Version: 3.0
The new update look great! I'm looking forward to using it during hurricane season!
Lots of info.
MikesTooLz 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
This app is great and provides a lot of info about both active and non active hurricanes. Also the National Hurican Center only provides the 3 & 5 day cones when an active storm is being tracked. The app does display them when available.
Almost
brt312 3.0 stars Version: 1.2
This could be a five star app with adding the 3 and 5 day predictions and full screen viewing of the images.
Planning guide
UncleWally 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
I live near the Gulf Coast and hurricane info is vital to our health. This app gives me the info I need to plan for any storm. Good job.
Veryyyy niceee
Bob8646847575 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
This app is useful but it could use an update as should every app. It could be very useful on a project but for four dollars it should show a prediction of its path otherwise to some people this app would be useless
Pretty, but useless
stbdtack 2.0 stars Version: 1.2
Knowing where a storm is and was is pretty much useless. What I really need to know is the predicted path and intensity. The 3 and 5 day prediction cones are minimum necessary info not available here.
The Ultimate Hurricane Tracker
db69 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
This is one slick hurricane tracker. It shows current storms with a map, path, and details of each step as you step through its path on the map. It shows past storms (through 1851) and lets you step through the path on a map with statistices at each step. There is a satellite view which also has links to many reports, bulletins, and bits of information: sea temps, NHC text bulletins, Atlantic & Pacific outlook, sea surface temps, and much more. Very slick, very good looking, easy to navigate, and very informative. Take a look at the description at the App Store, it's long and it's detailed. And the program does all that!
Great but...
CandidoUSA 3.0 stars Version: 1.2
needs some animation. Until then only 3 stars not 5.
Get this one
Camille-Katrina vic 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
This looks like a very good app, lots of detail. Maps look and work well. Unfortunately, there has to be a hurricane to really test this app. I would recommend it though just on what I have seen so far..
?
Deathrockerx 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
It's great so far but are the maps animated?
Great
alya k 1.0 stars Version: 1.2
It is great but I have not yet to try it out during hurricane season. Hope it's good I need it.
Professional
B.Mobile 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Great app for watching those storms! In addition, I've just spent a couple of hours checking out all of the data on past storms going back all the way to 1851. Ease of use with this app is amazing. Great work!
Extraordinary
Dr Felion 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This app has proven itself very useful, precise, concise and straight to the point. Its gives current Hurricane information as well as Hurricane history. On its first day installed on my iphone, it kept me informed on the path of Hurricane Omar and its potential proximity to Puerto Rico. Definitively, a Must have it!!!
Update much improved!
Enoch Soames 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I had initially given this app a poor review, but the new update addresses all my concerns. The new map is both attractive and useful, and overall the app is greatly improved. I appreciate the developer's responsiveness.
Awesome product...
Lizhopper 5.0 stars Version: 1.1
I had tried out the Tracking the Eye application first just because it was cheaper and found it severely lacking; I should have bought this tracking app first. The map is interactive letting me see all the information I want for each storm, it's not just a web image. Being as though I live in an area where hurricanes are a threat each year, this application gives me everything I need to stay up to date.
Terrific
km34 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Terrific app - much better than the Hurricanes alternative. Tracks movement, provides history, nice maps... Has a high-quality look and feel that does justice to "iPhone app."
Useable but not the best (2nd) place
Turbo Elf 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I have both hurricane apps. This one has a lot of flash to it but lacks the user friendliness and ease of the other app. The other app allows you to zoom maps and shows a real map of the US (with towns, etc) not a useless, but pretty, drawn representation of the US without cities, states, etc . If you want to know where a storm is going, buy the other program. It is more about real weather and actually useful. I gave this app 3 stars for the aestatics and the excellent history of past storms. It is a wonderful app and well done. But without a real map, you are left to guess it's approximate course. Having been through Katrina and Ike, I don't want to have to guess. Also the maps and pics do not really allow you to enlarge and scroll like the other app, making this app less useful. Basically, if you do not have to worry about being front row to a hurricane, buy this. But if you are in the line of fire and want to know if you are going to get pounded, buy the other app.
Poor
e.lusia 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Informations are old. Weather should be update every day. I will wait for updates
West Coasters wait until next season
xcelpro 3.0 stars Version: 1.0
I purchased this app after reading mostly positive reviews. I agree that it has a nice looking interface despite not showing state boundaries nor major cities. My complaint is (until promised support is added for Hurricane Season 2009), there is NO tracking of current storms that effect the west coast of the USA or Mexico, nor of Baja. So, west coasters should wait until next season (~June 2009?) to make use of this app.
Pretty; mostly useless
Ronmarlowe 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
I had high hopes for this app. Living in Florida, I need data in an app that is readilyvavailable on the web -- past track, predicted future track, cone of probability, watches and warnings, computer models, speed of forward motion, barometeric pressure, sat images, etc. This app provides the LEAST useful info -- past track -- in a pretty but mostly useless way. No zoom. No detail. Great historical data but of no use for current hurricane watchers unless they are in Montana.
Great application
xxMACxx 5.0 stars Version: 1.2
It's nice to have all the information in one easy location when hurricane season gets here. Very easy to use.
