Steve Jobs famously said that great artists steal, and the company has often taken that mantra to the extreme over the years. Some would say that much of Apple’s current software bears more than a passing resemblance to some of its competitors’ products. Take iOS 5′s Notification Center, for example. You’d need to be blind to say that it does not look eerily similar to the same notification system that Android has packed since day one. Some would argue that there are only so many ways you can handle something like a pull-down notification window. Some would call it stealing. Apple has even taken some cues from its own App Store. Mobile Safari now sports a “Reading List” feature that offers a similar service to that of Instapaper, the famous web app that also has a popular iOS app in the App Store. Instapaper’s developer, Marco Arment, doesn’t seem too concerned,

People didn't understand the iPad immediately. No one believed in the form factor. "Just a big iPhone," people called it. But it caught on, it took off, and now consumers can't let go of their tablets. The intimate, intuitive interface has created its own use case. People curl up with the device and they read. Publishers and app developers have provided a bonanza of ways to read on the iPad and iPhone. Some are free, some cost money, some require monthly subscriptions. All of them are vying for your attention in that new, valuable hour or two of tablet time in the evenings. But one app, Instapaper, sits in the iPad Hall of Fame on iTunes, pushing forward reader behavior just like the iPad itself. Marco Arment, creator of Instapaper, answered some questions for us about where this is all heading. It's An iPad Market At this point, Apple's lead in

By Chris Oldroyd, Monday, Oct 24, 2011 | Apple has updated its iPad 2 line of Smart Covers, killing off the orange polyurethane version and replacing it with a much more tasteful dark gray version. It has also improved the other colors in the polyurethane range, which it claims are now more vibrant — they all now come with a color matched microfiber lining too. The leather versions haven’t been changed except with the addition of the color matched microfiber lining. The Smart Covers are available in the Apple Store and are still priced at $39 for the Polyurethane model and $69 for the Leather version.

As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! This week’s pick was an easy one. Instapaper has long been one of my favorite apps, and I’ve been using it for years. Developer Marco Arment has released an incredible update to the app this week, one of the biggest (if not the biggest) in the lifespan of the app. Instapaper 4.0 has so many new features, I’m not even going to list them here (plus, if my geek-Cylon intuition is right, a certain other

Merlin Mann dechiffriert, warum ich Instapaper (3.99 €; universal; App Store-Link) so sehr mag: So, thanks, Marco. You’ve made my life better by making it easier to decide to read. Then, you made it way easier to do the actual reading.

posted by Trey Trawick on Monday, October 17, 2011 at 8:00 pm. Instapaper for iOS has been updated with loads of new features, including a revamped user interface, support for fetching information from Wikipedia, and dynamic footnotes. If you don’t already use Instapaper, check it out. It’s a great tool for saving interesting web articles for later reading. For example, if you see a great post that you want to read in the bathroom later, just hit the “Read Later” bookmarklet on your web browser, and next time you fire up Instapaper on your iPad, the article will be beautifully formatted and ready to read. Instead of just showing Liked articles from online friends who use Instapaper, the Friends panel can now show all links posted to your Facebook news feed, Twitter timeline, or Tumblr Dashboard. So even if your friends don’t use Instapaper as much as you do, you can still find plenty of great

Like to read? Got an iPhone or iPad? You really ought to have Marco Arment's US$4.99 Instapaper, which just got an upgrade to version 4.0. Instapaper's free web service allows you to flag stories to 'Read Later' with a single click, and you can always get your complete reading list via the site. For reading on the go, however, the cached stories in the app are ideal. The Instapaper app now features an iPad-specific article list interface; it swaps out the simple headline-by-headline scroll for a more spacious grid arrangement, complete with the first few lines of the story. The iPhone version has been streamlined too, with story excerpts, bylines and site information clearly visible. iOS 5 users get true hardware brightness control, making it easier to read under varying lighting conditions. Instapaper wants to let you know what your friends are reading, so now in addition to the stories flagged

If you like saving articles you find online for reading later, or for offline reading, chances are your app of choice is Instapaper for the iPhone and/or iPad. It’s ridiculously easy to use, the interface is clean and simple and it just works. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t room for improvement, and today Instapaper 4.0 was introduced with a few new upgrades. The design has been reworked to be more visually appealing, especially for navigation on the iPad. The new grid orientation is a little nicer for a quick glance at your articles, too. For the iPhone, the top navigation bar has been removed, with the option to add it back in if you want, so that your smaller screen has all the real estate it can use for content. Another nice addition is the option to look up words or phrases in Wikipedia. You’d select words like you

Whether you’ve got a new iPhone 4S, an iPad 2 or on older iOS device, Instapaper is a must-have application. Its offline reading features make saving web pages for later a snap, and it looks amazing doing it. Now, a huge new update ups the game all around for an already great product. Here’s a first-hand look at what’s new and notable: The iPad gets a completely redesigned interface for browsing articles, with a grid format instead of a list, providing better at-a-glance summaries of what your saved articles are about. It’s a big change, but a smart one that adds a lot of value without any real drawbacks. On the iPhone, navigating articles is simplified, with a list view that makes it easier to see at a glance who wrote an article and where it originally came from. Things just look cleaner overall, which makes finding the article you’re looking for much

Now that I've had my iPhone 4S for a couple of days, I'm amazed with what Siri can do. I've asked a number of questions -- real ones, not questions like "What is the meaning of life?" -- and have been totally impressed with how my interaction with the iPhone has changed. But there are more things I'd love to be able to do with Siri, which is the reason for this post. Everyone should understand that Siri is currently a beta product from Apple. A lot of the things I'm talking about here should happen once the product is out of beta and developers are given access to a Siri API. This is my way of letting some iOS developers know that I'd love to see Siri integration in their apps. Here we go: I think that Siri has the ability to become the intelligent agent that the mid-90s MagicCap

Marco Arment, developer of Instapaper, has provided some intriguing usage stats for his bestselling app. While the numbers aren't representative of the entire iOS ecosystem, the fact that Instapaper is a popular paid app (almost always in the top 5 paid apps in the News category on the App Store) makes these stats worth looking at for developers looking to efficiently design and market their apps. The majority of Instapaper users (56 percent) are using the app on an iPad, versus 39 percent on iPhone and a tiny six percent on the iPod touch. In only four months of availability the iPad 2 accounts for over 27 percent of devices using Instapaper, with usage numbers already nearly identical to those seen from the original iPad. As a universal app and a news reader, it's not particularly surprising that iPad adoption is so high among Instapaper users, but the huge jump in

Suppose you're at at your desk with a MacBook and an iPhone. You want to check cinema screening times at your local multiplex and the weather forecast so you'll know if you'll need a jacket or not. Which device do you reach for? If you choose the MacBook, you'll need to go to a cinema listings service and enter your zip code to find your multiplex, then repeat the process on a weather tracking site (unless your Dashboard already includes appropriate widgets for that data, in which case it's one keystroke away). On the iPhone, you just load a couple of apps, which know where you are so can show you the local data automatically. This exact scenario happened to me earlier, and I surprised myself by reflexively reaching for the iPhone, without thinking. Somewhere along the way it started to feel like the logical device to use for this sort

I remember when I first fell in love with Instapaper. It was a few years ago, and most people were still using Delicious or worse, their browsers, to bookmark things on the web. Delicious was still solid at the time, but it was also pretty slow. Instapaper was wonderful because it was fast. You hit one button (a bookmarklet) and it saved an article to read later. The reality is that the service hasn’t changed all that much over the years. But the iPhone and now iPad have transformed it from being a useful service into an essential one. And it has grown into a big enough business where creator Marco Arment was able to leave his job as CTO of Tumblr to focus on it full time. And now we’re seeing the fruits of that. Already an app featured on many "must have" lists for both the iPhone and iPad, Instapaper has gained a mountain of new features in its latest update. The app and Instapaper website now have native sharing with Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinboard and Evernote; according to developer Marco Arment, "You can post to any of these services from the app offline, and the app will queue up the post to be submitted next time it's online." That feature alone might make Instapaper worth its US$4.99 asking price, but new (completely optional) social features make it even more powerful. By – iOS app developers expecting a huge spike in sales from the debut of the Verizon iPhone 4 might not want to count their chickens before they hatch. That's the conclusion of Instapaper coder Marco Arment, who has seen almost significant fluctuations in sales of his app since the iPhone 4 debuted on "The Other Network" earlier this month. Mind you, Arment has seen sales spikes in the past: when a new iDevice hits the market and/or becomes available in a different country, as well as holiday sales. However, both his sales and Instapaper's ranking within the App Store have remained. Assuming that the vPhone is actually selling as well as Verizon claims — and that owner are buying apps at the usual rate as their AT&T brethren — Arment theorizes that most vPhones are being bought by existing iPhone/iTouch users who already have his (and other) apps, and merely

Well read on for TiPb’s top 5 most recommended readings apps for your iPad. Note: Many of the reader apps are free but individual books, issues, etc. are available via in-app purchase. The historical media verticals of radio, television, print and Web evaporate inside the frame of an iPad—it’s all just content, backlighted and inviting, waiting for the swipe of a finger. Long-form narrative and news has found a reliable wing man in the iPad. On the desktop, we clink links, scan the result and then click some more, drilling down in search of information, but never actually reading much of anything. Because of its screen size and relative heft, the iPad allows and encourages the user to quit typing so much, lean back and actually read something. And in the process, it renews the romance of reading: People want to touch what they are learning about and the iPad enables that intimate relationship, along with reading something longer than a Twitter post or a news alert. A few of my favorites: NEWS (FREE): With its smartly organized grid on the left and

As it turns out, you don’t have to wonder any longer -- Apple has created a section dedicated to what they consider the best 50 apps. Opinions may vary from user to user as to what constitutes the best iOS apps, but Apple has some ideas of their own and they’ve created a new page of the best 50 in their opinion which they call the App Store Essentials Hall of Fame. It’s a great place for first-time users to immerse themselves in their new iOS device purchase with what many of us would consider the best apps ever made. “More than two years since launch, we’re many apps wiser,” Apple’s gold-hued banner (seen above) reads. “Presenting our ongoing collection of the very best of the best.”

The Wired iPad app has a weight problem. The first one came in at about half a gigabyte of memory, and it hasn’t shrunk that much since. And Condé Nast’s newest iPad app, from the New Yorker, isn’t much better: It takes up 173 megabytes–but that’s for a weekly issue. If Condé can’t slim the app down, a month’s worth of New Yorkers will be much heavier than the first monthly Wired app. And at that rate, a year’s worth of issues would consume more than seven gigabytes–that’s close to half of the smallest iPad’s 16-gig memory capacity. No problem, says New Yorker Deputy Editor Pam McCarthy, who oversaw the production of the new app. She says it’s going on a diet, soon. Both the New Yorker and Wired have the same weight problem for the same reason: They are built on the back of an Adobe (ADBE) program that essentially

New to the App Store is Hulu Plus, which the popular online streaming service calls “something different” than their traditional advertising-based website. Within hours of the news breaking Tuesday about the company’s new $9.99 per month offering, the universal Hulu Plus app went live on the App Store, compatible with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Now they’ve released the Awesome iOS 4 Apps list, a collection of apps and games that have been updated to take advantage of iOS 4′s new features, like support for the Retina Display and Multitasking/Fast App Switching. Here are some notable that have made the list: Now I haven’t tried all 42 apps on the list, but I don’t think I’d consider all of them to be awesome. I suppose it’s all a matter of personal preference and interests (and of course, apps that actually have been updated for iOS 4 already). The entire Apple roundup can be found right here on iTunes.

In my search of the web I stumbled upon firstand20. It’s a site that displays the iPhone home screen of Developers, Tech Writers and Bloggers. I think it’s a pretty interesting way of showing off what some pretty influential people in the scene have on their iPhones. On the home page you will see a scoreboard of the applications that are on the most home screens on the site. Hey maybe you can find a new and interesting app. That’s were I found Instapaper, and I now use it everyday. Stay tuned, I plan on getting all the BuyMeAniPhone writers together and doing our own home page display.

Do you remember Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan when the Reliant ambushes the Enterprise? There is a moment from that nail-biting sequence that seems rather befitting for this article. Just to take you back, the Reliant is slowly, silently, closing the distance between itself and the Enterprise. Lieutenant Saavik turns to Admiral Kirk and begins quoting Starfleet Regulations concerning communication protocol between starships, but she is reprimanded by Captain Spock with “The Admiral is well aware of the regulations.” Moments later, the Enterprise gets pounded by the Reliant…which they discover has been hijacked by Khan. (Great scene!) My point is that no matter how much you think you know a subject or topic of discussion, you’d better do your research. It was a hard lesson learned from my first novel. I knew that privateers sailed the world with Letters of Marque, sure; but in my haste to get published

Tee Morris. Twitter. For many of my friends, the two go together like Bacon & Eggs, Baseball & Hot Dogs, and Princess Leia & Brass-Accented Bikinis. I love Twitter, so much in fact that I’ve penned two books on the Social Networking site. (And before anyone makes the joke, yes, they are both written in more than 140-characters.) In my books and in my “professional” Twitter feed, I review many of the third-party applications; and when it came to the iPhone, my passions for both smartphone and Social Networking got so nutty that Chapter 8 of All a Twitter focused exclusively on tweeting from the iPhone, my favorite app reviewed here. When I heard Naan Studio released TwitterFon Pro ($4.99USD, offered alongside the free original), I was thrilled. Whenever asked “What apps do you recommend for the iPhone?” I heartily endorse TwitterFon as the best free app out there.

The popular offline web page viewer, Instapaper Pro, has just received a relatively useful update that adds a bunch of new features, including the ability to share articles on Tumblr and Twitter. Instapaper Pro is an easy-to-use app for the iPhone and iPod touch that allows you to conveniently save web pages for later viewing. The app is able to save pages in graphical or text mode, star recommended articles, save your position, adjust text and font sizes, and so much more. Instapaper Pro is a must-have app for anyone who is constantly on-the-go and just can’t find time to read important articles during the day. Instapaper Pro v2.1 now features the ability to share articles on Tumblr or Twitter with built-in client support, send articles to supported Twitter apps if you have them installed, email articles without leaving the Instapaper, non-article screens no longer rotate, interface and speed improvements, and

(Danke, Friedemann!) Musikerkennungs-Sofware Shazam (kostenlos; App Store-Link) macht einen Versions-Sprung und bietet ab sofort eine ‘musikalische Rundreise’ an. iPhone developers have often struggled to make sense of Apple's iPhone app store approval process. A recent rejection of Instapaper Pro ($9.99 from iTunes)--a tool that saves Web pages for reading later--is just as baffling. The app has already been available in the store as both a free (iTunes link) and a paid app, but the latest 1.4 version was denied by Apple. According to the author of the app, Marco Arment, Instapaper Pro 1.4 was rejected because of the "middle icon" in the graphic below. Arment writes on his Web site that the iPhone-like icon was designed by Joshua Keay for FileMagnet (iTunes link) and was "generously offered to me for Instapaper 1.4". Arment goes on to say: Apple responded to Arment by stating: We've reviewed Instapaper Pro and determined that we cannot post this version of your iPhone application to the App Store because of an Apple trademark image.

One of my most-used apps

I take the bus and BART to get to work, and AT&T is notoriously bad in San Francisco. All I have to do in the morning is fly through my RSS feeds, adding anything that looks interesting to Instapaper. All of those stories get downloaded to my iPhone by the time I walk to the bus stop and I don't need to worry about the network at all from then. Totally worth the $5!
Perhaps my Favorite App of All-time

If you're considering buying this app, you should. I started on the Free version, which after using, I wanted to buy the Pro version just to thank Marco for the great app. After getting the Pro version, I grew into the added functionality and now wouldn't go back.
New features, like pagination, text/spacing options, and more all seem like solid upgrades. Plus, the developer has the good taste to strip out features that people weren't using as the app evolves. He's got the same good taste that many of us appreciate in Apple products (although the app isn't as graphically divine as an Apple product, you won't care, you'll be engrossed in reading, which is a sign of a quality interface).
Buy it.

This was the most useful part. Why would I read boring text files. Give me my money back because you just made your app worse.
The best for readers . . . but please return graphical mode.

Version: 2.2
I bought Instapaper Pro when I bought my first iPhone, and as an editor in publishing, I use this application not only for my daily use but also to illustrate how reading can indeed be furthered in the digital age.
I will not hold my rating hostage, so five stars it is. But please return graphical mode to Instapaper Pro. In addition to reducing its functionality to the free version, a business strategy that I do not understand, V2.2 suffers from two significant flaws:
1. What about saving web pages where offline graphical fidelity is useful (not necessarily text but things like receipts, forms, etc.)?
2. Text mode alone eliminates the graphic design of the article and thus eliminates a part of its unique voice and message. Is there not worth in the designs of Massimo Vignelli for the New Yorker, Milton Glaser for New York Magazine, or even the utilitarian groupthink of Wikipedia? And is the conformity produced by functions like text mode alone not what Edward Tufte warned about in his analysis of the numbing sameness produced by Microsoft PowerPoint?
Mr. Arment, please return graphical mode to InstaPaper Pro and return your application to its former if not its greater glory. If it is a matter of server traffic and space or even opportunity cost, please make graphical mode an in-app purchase, and I will gladly continue to support your work.
Fantastik app! - It was worth the $9.99 it used to be

I can't say enough about Instapaper. I was a little skeptical at first about reading articles with Instapaper instead of just using the websites, but the way Instapaper organizes your articles and presents them without ads is the absolute most perfect way to read an article.
That, alone, is worth the $5.
Then the developer adds amazing usability features like tilt-scroll and the new pagination to make reading that much more practical.
Used to be useful...

Graphical mode was the main reason I bought this software. I don't understand why the dev had to remove it... was it broken? Was it too hard to support? Or, like the update description said, user surveys indicated it was not a popular feature. Well, no one asked me, that's for sure.
I spend an hour every day of the week underground, on the subway, and have relied on Instapaper to be my "connection" underground. Without graphical mode, this software is now useless to me. What was once 5 star software in my book is now 1.
Graphic mode is gone. So is the value.

Ive been using the app about a month and loved it. Now that graphic mode has been removed (the whole reason I bought it), it is basically useless. I really don't want to spend money to buy Read it Later, but I guess I will have to. Please reconsider all your customers and add it back.

I've been a long time user of the website instapaper.com since it debuted in January. But this app takes the cake. A polished, slick, and phenomenally understated interface gets your to-reads with no hassle. Now if I can only find the time to read my saved articles.

Instapaper is an essential part of managing and consuming content for the web. Can't read it right now? Don't keep 32 windows and 121 tabs open. Add to Instapaper and read it later on either your desktop/laptop or iPhone. Also de-clutters the text so you can, you know, actually read it. And 2.0 is even better. Marco is one of those rare developers who keeps coming out with stuff that not only works well, but looks great and gets the heck out of your way when you're trying to use it (Tumblr, anyone?). Well done, and well worth the wait.

This is one of the most used apps on my phone. I use the bookmarklet in safari on my mac and add pages while I am working. When I am in transit on the metro I always have great reading material. Tilt scrolling is excellent. Marco deserves major praise for this app.
As of 2.0 the app got even better. The social features are a nice touch, but background updating is the real addition for me. My one request: a way to know if a folder is empty. A colour change or an article count would do the trick.

Awesome app - I use it daily on the way to & back from work on the train on my iPod Touch. Very simple to use & it expoits the iPod screen to the max! Small teething problems (crashes, updates that wipe off currently saved articles) still persist, but they are only slight annoyances.

I downloaded Instapaper Free and loaded up my iPod with a bunch of "read later" material before going on a business trip. Two articles into my flight, it was clear that buying the Pro version was a no-brainer. Instapaper works flawlessly and truly transforms the experience of reading online content. I absolutely love being able to so easily flag things via a bookmarklet on any of my machines or my iPod, sync, and take it on the road. I'm using Instapaper Pro every day, and it's exactly the kind of app that I want to support.
Excellent App!

This is one of the most useful and practical applications I have. I often want to read articles that I see on the Web, but don't want to sit at the computer to do so. With this program you can read when you want, without being connected through Wifi. The Pro version saves your space so you can resume an article exactly where you left off. There is nothing else out there that does what this does, and it is extremely easy to use.

This app has completely changed the way I read online articles. In the past, I used to accumulate a backlog of dozens of tabs in Firefox and NetNewsWire--for days or weeks at a time--but now I send all significant articles to Instapaper and I read them on the subway. The tilt-scrolling is fantastic for one-handed operation on a crowded New York subway car!
I purchased it just to make sure the developer got the money.

The free app is so incredible, and i didn't need the functionality of the pro app . . . but I bought it anyway. Why? This developer needs to be commended and rewarded. Talk about my favorite app, and one of the most valuable you will ever own.

I read a lot online, and I wanted a way to store articles to "read later" that I could access easily from my computers and my iPhone. Instapaper works great for this. I used the free version for a week, then recently upgraded to the paid version. I find tilt scrolling amazingly convenient, and being able to remember my position in a page quite useful.

I have to say, without the shadow of doubt, that this application has been very useful. I subscribe to a ton of feeds and since I'm never able to read every article while at work, I generally clip them to this service and read them later, when I have more down time. Once I've read the article I can either A, save it to Evernote for my online reference or, B, delete it and find more articles to add to my paper. The developer really listens to our emarks and understands what makes a great app. Simplicity of design and usability are fantastic!

One problem
3.1416
Version: 1.2
I bought this in the hope that it would fix the one big problem with the free version--When the iPhone is tilted on its side, it switches to landscape view. This wouldn't be a problem if that didn't jump you back to the top of the page. If you are halfway through a long article, you are stuck flicking your way back to where you were.
Tilt scroll is nice, but would be nicer if it were varible speed. One of the problems with the iPhone is that there is no easy way to quickly move through a long document. It's: flick, flick, flick, flick... If the speed of the scrolling increased with the pitch of the tilt, it would help overcome this shortcoming.

To me this is the one iPhone app I can't live without. It's changed my article reading workflow. I now batch up the articles I wish to read from my RSS feeds and save them to Instapaper for offline reading wherever I happen to have a few free minutes. No lag waiting for the slow data connection or need to navigate to different sites.
I would have paid $10 for the free version. Having the added features in the Pro version is like a bonus. That being said, the ability to save your place in an article in between sessions is worth the incremental cost of the Pro app.

I usually find the most intriguing short reading material at the time and in the place when I'm least able to actually do the reading: when I'm at work in my office. Being able to bookmark these reading items and read them offline later when I have a spare moment, then, is hugely useful. This is an elegantly simple application that does very little but does it perfectly. And because what it does is so useful, it's actually one of the best reasons to own an iPhone or iPod Touch.
Tilt Scroll Goodness
John Corso
Version: 1.3
Tilt scrolling must be reactivated for each article via a button at the bottom of the screen. At first this seemed tedious: why must I keep turning on this wonderful feature? Then I realized that every time you hit the button, Instapaper resets the zero point for scrolling, thus accommodating the iPhone's new position as you slouch ever lower in your chair. This flawlessly implemented interface feature will surely attract Apple's attention and find its way into the iPhone OS. Well done, Mr. Arment.

Tilt scrolling is amazing! I wouldn't be surprised if it became a native iPhone feature. It's a brilliant way to read text.
Instapaper got offline viewing right where everyone else got it wrong. That plus tilt scrolling makes this app worth the $10 price tag.

I first started using Instapaper when Marco released it as a web app. It's simplicity was intriguing, and it quickly became an essential part of my daily workflow. When the iPhone came out, I used the web version from it, not realizing there was a true app available. A quick search one day made me very happy when I found the free version. It's great. Then I found the Pro version. Easily the best $9.99 I've spent on iPhone apps. The ability to read web sites offline (I have horrid AT&T coverage where I live) made the Pro version a must have. To borrow from the NRA, you can have my Instapaper Pro when you pry it from my cold dead hands.

I read about Instapaper in an app review article and instantly downloaded it. It's probably the only app I use everyday. I absolutely love Instapaper free but as soon as I saw the pro version I bought it. It is well worth the money! The free version did not save where I left off in the article and it was frustrating to have to scroll to get back to the spot. With the pro version the problem is solved! Also the scrolling feature is really neat. This app is a must have!

I've been a huge fan of Instapaper Free for a while now. Rather than speed through an article to quickly get back to work, click the Instapaper favelet in your browser toolbar to save it for later reading. Instapaper Pro added the feature I missed in the Free, the ability to email articles to friends. Well worth the $10, but try the Free version first!

I'm very pleased with Instapaper Pro and use it everyday. Last week we were on vacation in Maine. Usually I pack several books, but this time I just saved a lot of interesting material via Instapaper and when there was down time, I just pulled out my iPhone. Another benefit, since our hotel charged for wireless access and I chose not to pay for it out of spite, was to click on articles linked by emails I've subscribed to, then click on Read Later and let the Instapaper web page download it (in other words NOT wait for the web page to load on my iPhone via AT&T). Then later, after saving several articles, I hit Update in the Instapaper app and put the iPhone down and let the app load my iPhone while I did something else for awhile. According to the Instapaper Blog, Marco intends to make text only the default update to the iPhone, which will make this process even speedier and more useful to someone without a wifi connection.

It did for me, anyway. For years, I'd have the same old system. An interesting article comes into my feed reader, gets opened in my browser to be read later, and eventually gets lost in a browser crash, or gets culled a few weeks down the line when I have too many tabs open. With Instapaper, I actually read things! Open an article, hit the bookmarklet, and the peice is ready for me to read on my iPhone during my daily commute.
