by Silicon Valley startup CloudOn beat Microsoft in releasing an iPad app that lets you edit Microsoft Office documents on the Apple tablet. CloudOn provides complete access to Word, Excel and Powerpoint, cloud storage and file browsing. The app supports Microsoft Office 2010 on the iPad and iPad 2. The limited testing stage app sold out Wednesday, as iPad users rushed to download the app. The startup published a statement on its website, explaining that it had been overwhelmed by the response. “Unfortunately, we did not anticipate the thousands of people that would gravitate to the service in a matter of hours. Although we had planned to support a large number of users, the interest generated was beyond our expectations, and we have had a few teething issues with our platform (some of which we have already partially resolved),” CloudOn said. CloudOn will return to the App Store once the company

With the huge wealth of new functionality that iOS5 brings, so the numerous app updates flow. In this case, it’s Apple’s flagship iWork applications that have profited from updates that incorporate iCloud functionality. Numbers, Pages and Keynote have all been updated to version 1.5 adding the ability to automatically store content in iCloud and thus keep documents up to date across all the user’s iOS devices. As well as that, documents can be downloaded to a PC or Mac at https://www.icloud.com/ as a number of different useful filetypes such as Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Pages ’09, Numbers ’09, Keynote ’09 and PDF format. By Leanna Lofte, Wednesday, Oct 12, 2011 | One of the announced features of iCloud is the ability to keep all your files from Apple’s Pages, Numbers, and Keynote apps up to date. The update to those apps that bring this support is now available. I am particularly excited about using Numbers with iCloud. I use Numbers on my iPad to record my students’ grades, but sometimes I forget to bring my iPad to class. It never fails that those are the days that a student notices that I made a mistake and needs a grade changed. Before iCloud, I would make a note in my notes app and make the change later. Now, I’ll just open the spreadsheet with Numbers on my iPhone, make the change, and it will be reflected on the spreadsheet on my iPad. Win. You can create amazing documents and presentations on your iPhone, iPad, and

Yesterday, Apple announced the availability of the iWork suite for iPhone and iPod touch. iWork consists of Apple's productivity software, Keynote, Pages and Numbers. All were originally desktop applications that made their way to the iPad. The question is: Does this work for you? The Plus Side We're not crazy enough to take our iPad or MacBook EVERYWHERE we go. That would just be silly. Our iPhone, on the other hand, that has to go with us 99.9 percent of the time. If you use public transportation, this can be useful. If you have to type something on on your way to work while riding the bus or the the train, just type something up on your iPhone. It takes up far less space than the iPad or a laptop and is much less of a hassle to use than a laptop for short durations. We've heard reports that

posted by Joe Rossignol on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 4:59 pm. Earlier today, in a rather surprising move, Apple released the iWork suite for the iPhone and iPod touch. It certainly wasn’t an expected announcement from the folks at Cupertino, especially considering the fact that the upcoming WWDC 2011 is set to be focused on upcoming software such as iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion. Nevertheless, the iWork suite consisting of the Pages, Keynote, and Numbers apps are now available on the iPhone and iPod touch for $9.99 each. iWork originally made its iOS debut on the iPad last January; those that purchased any of the three iWork apps for iPad can download the new iPhone and iPod touch counterpart for free from the App Store. Here’s a rundown of what you can expect from each app: I would still recommend using a Mac if you’re going to

by This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business. Meetings and presentations are a way of life in the business world. That said, there’s nothing worse than dragging around a bunch of files and equipment to meetings. It would be so nice to have everything that’s necessary for a presentation or meeting stores in one place. And if that one place was a thin and lightweight piece of technology — like an iPad — it would be even better. Every organization has its own definition of formal and informal meetings and presentations, depending upon its corporate culture, clients and individual responsibilities. Whether it’s a structured sales presentation or a casual brainstorming session, here are some iPad apps that help you do everything for a presentation, from creating slides to taking minutes. As most companies have looked to cut costs any way they could, the result has been a workforce equipped with underpowered devices, plastic enclosures and an outdated mobile paradigm that require most users to carry around a mouse and power cord to be of any real use. Most business users have simply had enough, and for a very affordable price, are starting to fund their own IT revolution by bringing their new iPads to the workplace. Here’s how you can do the same. Getting a new iPad 2 is only half the battle. Once you’re at work, before you can reclaim the time you once lost to reboots or hunting for the one free power outlet in the conference room, you realize you need to get connected to the corporate network. For the most part, establishing a new connection to your place of work’s wireless network is quite easy. If you’re

Posted 02/23/2011 at 6:21am | by J Keirn-Swanson We've seen what Apple could dish up when it came to word processing, and we've seen the competitors bring occasionally impressive functionality to this realm. We've even seen word processing on the iPhone, which, while not glamorous or particularly easy, is still nice. Spreadsheets were likewise a solid contender for data crunching even if there were some major shortcomings in the apps which sought to dethrone Numbers from its rightful place. The third and final installment is at last at hand. Presentations, the scourge of corporate meetings. It's almost as if DocsToGo realized the near impossibility of its task -- how to create a universal app that also manages flexibility and creativity -- threw up their hands and gave up. Sure, you can open PowerPoint files, save them, share them, etc., but creation? Creation is an ugly process that gives no pleasure

Apple released a fresh update of its iPad productivity suite iWork yesterday, and what makes it worthwhile is that it finally makes Keynote a useful presentation tool. This update supports core iOS 4.2 features such as AirPrint and multitasking. The update also brings better PDF exporting, and provides some fixes for font issues that arise on export. As mentioned, the update finally brings the iPad into the arena of truly powerful presentation tools: Keynote for iPad 1.3 now supports a presenter’s view of sorts. However, you’re limited in your choices: you can choose to display current, next, current and next, and current and notes. There’s no option for current and next, and notes, which a setting I use on OS X Keynote all the time. The 30-second commercial features an array of apps, which we’ve gathered for you below, complete with a link to the iTunes store so you don’t have to go hunting. Some stock iPad applications are featured too, in the shape of Mail, iTunes University and Iron Man 2 playing as a video. It’s also interesting to note that during the Epic Citadel spot we see two knights about to fight, something that happened during Epic’s demo, but not in the character-less version available at the moment. One of my biggest gripes about iWork for iPad has been the absolutely unwarranted pain it was to get files onto and off of the device. For a company that prides itself on the user experience, file transfers from the web into Apple’s own suite of productivity apps was downright embarrassing. The iWork 1.2 update for iPad brings about a whole host of welcome improvements, the best one in my opinion being the ability to import and export directly from iDisk, or any WebDAV-supported virtual disk. Dropbox isn’t WebDAV, unfortunately, and I wouldn’t hold my breath for Dropbox support. Until now, Pages was the only one of the three apps that could export to its MS Office counterpart, but now, all three can export to Office-compatible formats. I’m curious to see how well this will work with Keynote, since most Keynote files I’ve exported to PowerPoint look like they were victims

With the undeniable popularity and success of the iPhone 4 (despite the antenna debacle), iPad, and ever-increasing Mac sales, Apple is gaining customers faster than ever. If you're thinking about making the switch, this could be your perfect setup. Component one: iPhone 4 Now in its fourth iteration, Apple's iPhone has forever changed the mobile phone landscape by thrusting touch-screen technology to the tips of every tech geek's tongue and every consumer's wish list. Despite its early and somewhat overblown issues, iPhone 4 has had record-setting sales. With the exception of the complaints from a vocal minority regarding its antenna, critics love the iPhone 4. Think of iPhone 4 as your mobile communications component in this setup. With it, you can send text messages; make calls; send e-mail, instant messages, and tweets; update Facebook; and check in with Foursquare. Of course, you can play games and download other apps to the

According to a report today published by Business Insider, Apple has generated somewhere around $3 million in revenue from their iWork iPad apps — which includes Pages, Keynote, and Numbers — since the iPad’s U.S. launch early in April. They believe if this trend continues, the suite of apps could bring in $40 million per year. So how did they come up with these numbers? Let’s take a quick look. Business Insider apparently spoke with developers with top-ten paid iPad apps, and based on those discussions, they were able to conclude that the top paid iPad app moves around 7,500 units on a Saturday or Sunday. Weekdays are quite a bit lower, with about 2,500 units being sold per day. Assuming that each of the three apps has had about the same number of apps sold, and that each has been at or near the top of the paid apps list,

The folks at Business Insider (BI) are reporting that Apple's iWork apps for iPad -- Pages, Keynote and Numbers -- have likely generated US$3 million in revenue since the iPad was launched in the US. If the trend continues, the apps could bring in $40 million per year. Where did BI get their numbers? Some broad assumptions, honestly. Discussions with developers who consistently have apps in the top ten suggested that top paid iPad apps will sell about 7,500 copies on a Saturday or Sunday, and about 2,500 on a weekday. At $10/each, that works out to approximately $825,000 per week. Admittedly, it's "a very rough estimate." The iWork apps have been among the top 10 paid apps since the iPad's release in the US. An estimate, yes, but it does illustrate an important point: users want "serious" work apps for the iPad. Sure, the initial user base was largely fans

Let’s set aside the question of whether you should get an iPad and suppose you already bought one last weekend. You probably floated home and loaded it with a few whiz-bang apps and maybe even passed it around to your friends. Such self-doubts can be easily cast aside, providing you delve a little more deeply into the App Store than the Top 100 list — and are ready to open the wallet again. If you budget around $100 for a few new and upgraded apps, you can easily make the iPad into much more of a constant companion than something you just trot out when the neighbors are watching. Start with productivity apps, because a mobile device is most valuable when it lets you work anytime,

I don’t give a ton of presentations, but I’m something of a presentation junky — one of my favorite web sites is Presentation Zen, where the author gives lessons on design theory. Therefore, I’ve been looking forward to iPad Keynote since Phil Schiller gave his dog and pony show. Keynote for the iPad is a decent companion program if you need to give light presentations or make light edits while on the road. As a sole means of creating presentations, I found it lacking. Currently, getting files to and from your iPad is needlessly difficult. To get an already-created presentation from your computer to your iPad, you need to either sync it via iTunes, or send it to yourself via e-mail; there’s no mountable file-system or iDisk support. Also, if you make changes to the presentation, you’ll need to export and re-download it via iTunes; it will not auto-update your local

Amazing evolution of a fantastic product!

Version: 1.0
Keynote for the iPad has succeeded in surpassing the Mac version in ease of use, and arguably it's capabilities.
The ease with which it can create effects, transitions and the like is truly spectacular. For example, Keynote for the iPad has incorporated the ability to create Motion Tweens between slides, so that you can design effects by hand through positioning of elements.
It's positioning, sizing and masking capabilities have dramatically leapfrogged the Desktop's offering due to the ability to press a "like item" to size and position appropriately.
Laying out a slide on the iPad to create a desired look is much simpler on the iPad than on the Desktop, due solely to the hardware that Apple has released. It is my firm hope that in the near future all products can incorporate multitouch displays so that the full iWork and iLife suites can incorporate the functionality that we now have available on the iPad.
In any case, I can already see myself creating my presentations on my iPad and then annotating them using my desktop simply from these first few hours with interacting with this groundbreaking new product!
A beautiful app with no compromise.

In Keynote for iPad, Apple has gone all out. Slides, tables, charts, and animations never looked so good. The Apple-styled themes and terrific photo integration turn the creation of presentations simple and stylish. Without a doubt, this is the easiest way to build a slideshow and makes every project professional and elegant. Every action, command, and animation is fine-tuned until the elements of creation begin to disappear as your creation takes shape. The intuitive chart creation and transition addition are pieces of this perfect storm of ingenuity. There is no doubt in my mind that after the intimate experience of using this app, you will never feel the same way about your presentations. Well done, Apple.

Keynote for the iPad is truly magical. In fact, it made 9 dollars and 99 cents disappear form my account. I like this app better than the t-pain app. To be fair, t-pain hasn't released an iPad optimized app yet, so I'll reserve judgment.
