Important notes:
- You need an iPhone 3GS to download Layar, because the app makes heavy use of the compass to display the Reality View.
- If you experience problems with the app, restart your iPhone (switch it off and on) and most crashes should be solved.

The Layar Reality Browser displays real time digital information on top of reality in the camera screen of the mobile phone. While looking through the phone's camera lens, a user can see houses for sale, popular bars and shops, touristic information of the area, play a live game, etcetera.
How do you use Layar?
Select a layer in the featured or popular section. Or search for a layer using any keyword in the search tab. Select a layer. Hold the phone in front of you. See information being displayed on top of the camera display view, by turning around you can point your phone toward the various points of interest. Adjust settings (filters) by clicking on the button in the top right corner. For all points of interest which are displayed on the screen, information is shown at the bottom of the screen. By clicking on the little arrow you will see how you can interact with that specific Point of Interest (POI). Use the map and list views to see all points in one screen.
What is Augmented Reality?
Wikipedia says: "Augmented reality (AR) is a field of computer research which deals with the combination of real-world and computer-generated data (virtual reality), where computer graphics objects are blended into real footage in real time."
What are layers?
Layers are the equivalent of web pages in normal browsers. Just like there are thousands of websites there will be thousands of layers in our application. A layer is the digital view that is added to the camera view. This is the first time that so many brands use one application to provide an augmented reality service on the mobile phone.
The Application
Why use it?
Layar is a tool to browse the world. It enables exploration, more informed decisions, serendipity and fun.
How does it work?
The Layar application works with GPS and compass to determine location and the direction the Phone is facing. The camera input provides the reality. The location is used to retrieve the layer information with coordinates and other relevant data. This is retrieved from the Layar server where all partner Layar information is collected and processed. This then is the combined, computated and displayed in the 'active' layer of the application. Layar has launched the non-beta version of Layar Player, a free tool that allows iPhone developers to offer augmented reality experiences from their apps. In addition, the company is also pitching the new product to other companies like agencies and brands. Think "Star Wars" games have been done to death? I guarantee you've never seen anything like Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner. It's like the PC classic "TIE Fighter" mixed with the ingenious UFO on Tape mixed with the Layar Reality Browser. Confused? This video might help: As you can see, the game overlays itself on whatever appears in your iPhone camera lens. Point it at the night sky and, presto, you're blasting TIE fighters in outer space. After seeing the first augmented reality enhanced magazine (Sueddeutsche Zeitung), we have great use of AR technology to share… During the Lowlands music festival in the Netherlands, the Stedelijk Museum has lent digital versions from its world famous art collection to visitors with Layar application installed on their smartphones (Android or iPhone). Here’s how it all worked out: At a special desk, visitors were able to choose one of the 175 famous art works by artists like Picasso, Karel Appel, Andy Warhol and Gilbert & George. Then once they “borrowed” an art work, they were able to place it anywhere on the festival terrain so that other visitors could see it by pointing their smartphone (with Layar app installed) around the area. I have faith that once the novelty of the coolest new smartphone feature wears off, I will again walk the streets with my eyes open to the world around me, not to the screen of a smartphone. Until then, forget it. The best new thing to hit smartphones is augmented reality. These apps, like Goggles (free, for Android phones) and Layar (free, for Android and Apple devices), are like space-age glasses. Point your smartphone in any direction and look through the camera viewer, and it will reveal information about what it sees. Applications like Opera Mini, Layar and Lookout topped GetJar’s first annual Gettie Awards. Team IntoMobile was there last night and it was quite an interesting experience. I’ll get to the winners first, as GetJar was seeking the best Java, Symbian, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, iPhone and Android apps. The winners received some monetary reward (I don’t think it was straight fat stacks of cash but some sort of developer compensation) and the acclaim of the mobile world. The Java app winner was WaveSecure Backup, Nimbuzz nabbed the Symbian award and Opera Mini grabbed the top spot for Windows Mobile. Today in Amsterdam, popular augmented reality (AR) mobile browser maker Layar is celebrating the one year anniversary of its launch with an event called NEXT. In the company's brief lifetime, it has attracted millions of users to the Layar mobile application on Android and iPhone devices with its impressive catalog of layers. Today, the company made several announcements including additional international pre-load deals with handset manufacturers, new features for its browser, and partnerships with major brands. Augmented Reality (AR) is a hot topic in the app stores these days. So, what’s AR? It’s multiple technologies being used simultaneously to provide you with data relevant to your location. Layar, the much hyped augmented reality app is now finally back on the App Store after a prolonged absence. First released a couple months ago in October, the app had been then removed by its developer to get some much needed performance improvements. Well, they’ve been hard at work and Layar is now back with an entirely new engine, which as they claim, should make the overall experience much more smoother. On top of the many performance improvement, this new version comes with some extended language support, as well as a couple new “layars”. It’s 3GS only, but completely free, so go check it out!

It was one of the main questions I had for the Dutch company, which markets an augmented reality browser, when they launched at the Mobile 2.0 Europe event in Barcelona last year. When would they be complementing their Android program with an application for the iPhone? They said it’d come in the fall of this year, and while there have been a number of AR applications made available on the App Store in the meantime, Layar’s finally arrived a couple of hours ago and it’s worth a second look. It's a cool idea but the interface is unintuitive. When I want to try something I'm usually at a loss as to what button to press. I wind up randomly pressing buttons until it finally does what I want it to. Amazing that they took such a simple idea and executed it in such a confusing way.

The UI in AR mode is crowded and busy. The overlayed grid is annoying and just gets in the way. Poor attempt.

Please give the app a rounded-square background so it doesn't just blend into the home screen. I love the app, but I hate the icon. I have 50+ apps on my phone and they are all square shaped except for Layar, very annoying.... Please change this ASAP.

One of the better AR interfaces I've seen in camera mode, but it crashes every time I try to switch to map view on a 3gs running 3.1.2.
A must have for 3Gs owners

Definately the best AR browser out by far. It has a wealth of layars w/ all kinds of info and runs pretty smooth so far. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars is lack of landscape mode I hope that comes in the future.

Cool idea, but app is buggy and UI is confusing. Doesn't really seem to work on my 3GS. Hopefully will get better with updates in the future.

This app still needs work on many levels. My main issue with this app is power consumption! Losing 20% of my battery in 15 minutes is not ok.
