To help stranded travelers, Lonely Planet is offering European iPhone guides like this one free of charge. Is it just me, or does the planet seem really angry these days? Earthquakes galore, tsunamis, and now this ash-spewing volcano! We're doomed, I tell ya. Doomed! Anyway, pity the poor traveler who's stuck in Europe until flights can resume. As we reported Tuesday, to help make those folks' lives a tiny bit easier, travel-guide publisher Lonely Planet is offering 13 European iPhone guides free of charge. That's pretty generous, as they normally sell for $9.99 apiece. And, psst, you didn't hear this from me, but you don't actually have to be stranded in Europe to get the apps. You just have to download them before tomorrow, April 22, which is when the offer ends. The available freebie cities are as follows: By the way, apparently there was some confusion about whether the apps

So, some good has come from the Icelandic volcano eruption that has caused chaos for European travelers, as Lonely Planet have decided to cut the price of all their City Guide iPhone applications from £9.49 to absolutely zero! This offer has been in place for a couple of days, but you still have a chance to grab the apps, as it expires at 11:59 (GMT) on Thursday 22nd April. As one would expect from Lonely Planet, these apps are pretty special. Based on extensive research, they offer location aware, interactive maps which can be used both online and offline, a mass of images, points of interest, reviews, travel information and the option to favorite places you must visit. The cities covered by the Lonely Planet Guides include: There are several others inside the App Store too, so take a look around and grab whichever you need ready for a future holiday!

Eles permanecem

Eyjafjallajökull has had one positive effect: free Lonely Planet apps for you to get around. Economists call it a positive externality, we just call it cool. Lonely Planet, the accredited travel and information guide, is offering thirteen of its city guides for free on the App Store due to the Icelandic volcano. The applications, which offer you offline maps, geo-coded points of interest and location-based navigation, usually cost between $10 and $15. Hurry, the offer ends on 22nd April and we can be pretty sure that it won’t happen again soon. Then again, none of us are volcanologists.

Did Eyjafjallajökull mess your week up? The answer is probably "no" if you're asking who Eyjafjallajökull is. For those of us who did have our week interrupted by that big exploding volcano in Iceland, Lonely Planet is offering thirteen of its City Guides for free in the App Store (and okay, they're free to all, no proof of volcano-interruption required). The aptly-named "Volcano Relief Sale" is being held in hopes of helping travelers stuck in unfamiliar places find "access to practical information as well as suggestions on what to do whilst stranded," according to Tom Hall, Lonely Planet Travel Editor. "That's why we're giving away iPhone city guides to major affected destinations." I've been to all but two of those destinations, and if you're stuck in any of them, you really should be thanking Eyjafjallajökull (and now, Lonely Planet). The thirteen City Guides are normally priced between $10 and $15, so

Crashes on startup

This was a great app, but now it won't even open, it just crashes on startup every time. I have rebooted my iPhone, but it didn't help. The Paris app has the same problem. I hope it gets fixed soon.
Average quality for most expensive London guide app

I purchased LP London for a recent visit with my family of teenagers. The most useful feature of the app is the map, which we used daily to easily locate attractions of interest and find our way around the city. There is a 'find your location' feature but the map is almost as functional without it and avoids wireless charges. Various categories of features are displayed on the map but the ability to filter them does not persist between launches of the app and it should. The walking tours are a list of places to walk with little description of even major sites on a walk and no directions to find one's way between sites. Locations of underground stations are shown on the map but there is no map of the underground system nor major bus lines (these are noted for each feature, you just can not see how things are connected). A nice feature is the ability to save a list of favorite sites for easy reference while moving about. This could be better if the user could enter notes for items on the favorite list. Much of the remaining text was of little help for family touring. The restaurants and lodging are more for the single or paired traveler; we did not visit any of them. Some of the comments in the text are snide attempts at humor or come with sexual inuendos that I could have done without. A large amount of the suggestions would be more appropriate for young adults looking for night life. The prices are a year out of date at least. Overall, it was useful for the map but needed supplementation from another popular guide book. Those on a budget might find a paper map would be less expensive though less convenient and more bulky.
Do not buy this app! It does not do what it says it does!
