Sometime this summer a wiseacre commenter (we get a few) suggested we do a "Five Apps" for a variety of somewhat offbeat topics. One wasn't so far-fetched however: gastroenterologist. One could say that a gastro doc has about the same needs as any doctor, of course, and that's an easy out. So here are 5 apps that are great for gastroenterologists and possibly any medical specialist... Coming soon: 5 apps for the lemur owner. Epocrates Rx - This free app looks up drugs and is updated weekly. Epocrates [iTunes link] has already been available for other mobile platforms for a while, this is a must-have for physicians, I would think. There's also a Pro version that is designed for medical professionals, and it requires a yearly subscription fee to work. It's $99 for one year, which is pretty reasonable for what this does -- which includes an amazing pill ID tool.

best medical calculator after comparison, and free..

Version: 1.1
With a few colleagues we have compared MedCalc to the other commercial and non-commercial apps available on the app store, and it definitely seems MedCalc is the best calculator. Thank you Dr Tschopp and Pfiffner for your open source application!
works well

Version: 1.1
Everything works great in this app. I'm a RN student and i use it to double check my math. I would however, like to see Erickson's stage of development, morse scale, braden scale. Those would really be helpful
excellent!

As a clinical pharmacist in an ICU and i've found this very helpful! its user friendly- I love that I can star my most frequently used formulas.
Fractional excretion of calcium...YES!
Endocrinology
Version: 1.1
Finally a great calc app that includes fractional excr of calcium. You can even choose between different units such as mg/dL, mmol/L, and mg/L. The result is output as a percent; if you want to convert this to the fraction number, just need to know to convert this yourself by moving the decimal to the left 2 places. This calculation can also be used to calculate the "calcium-to-creatinine ratio" to rule out FHH; you just input the 24 hr urine #'s instead of the mg/dL #'s. Bonuses: categories, can search for formulas, saves recently used formulas in a special tab as well as allows you to 'star' formulas which can be used as your favorites folder. Developer is responsive to comments. Great app and it's free!
Fantastic Application

Version: 1.1
This application is fantastic. As an academic intensive care fellow completing my training in a few months, I am truly impressed with the content of this program and the ease of use. I highly recommend this program to anyone doing critical care; in an academic center or community hospital.
Excellent!

This app has a great user interface, it is definitely the most user friendly of all medical calculators available on app store. After the update this app is all you need from a medical calculator. The developers are very receptive to user's feedback. Great job!

I've used this calculator extensively when it was on the Palm, and am glad to see it available for the iPhone. Great interface, nicer than the other medical calculators available for the iPhone, excellent support. Plus free.
Good but could be better

Version: 1.0.1
When you are using the formulas they are very east to use and are 100% accurate. I only wish that they had a way to understand all of the medical abriviations if you are not a doctor. Like a seperate page for the or something like that.
Incorrect data
Dr. Nic
Version: 1.0.1
The equations built into the system are incorrect. You know it's bad when they calculate the IBW (Ideal Body Weight) incorrectly. Who knows what other equations are wrong.

As a burn & pediatric trauma nurse, I find this app helpful & handy, especially in the ICU setting. When time is of the essence, it helps a lot to have a good resource like this in my pocket.
Easy and useful

Version: 1.0.1
The idea that I can get so much computing power and ease for free is stunning. So far I am only using this app for three calculations on a regular basis, because that is all I need, but they are intuitive, clean and thoughtful. I highly recommend this app. But don't forget to keep your brain in on the process of calculating medications!
Best Med Calc Available
__GPS
Version: 1.0.1
Not only is it the most comprehensive Med Calc on the iTunes market, the best part is the price.

Version: 1.0
Nice to see MedCalc for the iPhone. I like the interface to enter values better than Medical Calc (which has pretty much the same formulas). But how can the opioid converter be missing hydrocodone??
Great app

Loved this app on my Palm, was happy to see for my iPhone. As a pedi, the med calculator is great. Don't use the others much, but great to have them there as well.
Excellent app! Would give it 4 stars if you...

Version: 1.0.1
Please add Wells criteria for PE, pneumonia severity indices (both PORT/PSI score and CURB-65 with assoc mortality rates), APACHE/SOFA scores (ICU mortality), CPIS (Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score), and more acid-base formulas (compensation formulas for metabolic alkalosis/resp acidosis/resp alkalosis). If you do so, then definitely 4 stars, if not 5 without question!
