Posted 10/04/2010 at 12:36pm | by Andrew Hayward Each new iPhone has offered fresh and fantastical ways to improve your daily life, but the epic tag-team of the iPhone 4 and iOS 4 deliver the greatest set of tools and features to date. With the introduction of FaceTime video calls, multitasking, and the high resolution Retina display, the iPhone 4 has moved even further away from being just a powerful phone and web-surfing device. Now more than ever, the iPhone is a true lifestyle-enhancing accessory. Between the built-in features and the hundreds of thousands of options in the App Store, not to mention a few key accessories, the iPhone 4 can be figuratively formed and changed to fit your daily needs, whether you’re planning your daily commute, knocking out items on your to-do list, or simply looking to try a new restaurant. With this wide-ranging versatility in mind, we’ve come up Read More
Case study: Griping about signal quality can produce results
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Thu, 09 Sep 2010 20:30:00 UTC +00:00
For most iPhone owners, it seems like AT&T is deaf to our complaints about signal quality. It appears, however, that griping loudly and repeatedly to the company have an effect. I live in the suburbs south of Denver and my signal quality is pretty good. However, whenever my wife and I have gone to Colorado Rockies baseball games in the last few years (we're season ticket holders), we've had awful service at the ballpark. Although the signal strength indicator would show five bars, it was impossible to do much of anything with our iPhones or iPads. Even trying to send out text messages would fail, and attempts to use the MLB At-Bat app in the ballpark were laughable to the point that I didn't purchase the app for the 2010 season. What was even more frustrating is that AT&T is a ballpark advertiser at Coors Field, so you think they'd want Read More

By Jeff Scott on September 3rd, 2010 It's a holiday tradition on the App Store -- apps and games on deep discount! In what is becoming a holiday weekend tradition, lots and lots of developers are putting their apps on sale. From the big guys to the small ones, they all want to cash in on the rush this weekend. Seems like the magic price point is $0.99 for sale games and apps to really do well, so that’s where many are setting this weekend. Update: 9/4 9:20am – Updated for the changes that showed overnight.Update: 9/5 9:30am – Update – added a few more that showed up overnight. Here’s our list of the most interesting sale apps. We’ll be updating this a few times this weekend, so keep checking back for more. But there’s no way we’ll be able to catch all of them so keep an eye on our Read More

WWE Latest: Two years after App Store launch, WWE launches 1st iPhone App
Mini_discussion_bubble MobileCrunch - Posted Mon, 19 Apr 2010 21:00:21 UTC +00:00
It took WWE almost two years to release an iPhone App, but here we are. That’s right, today the company, which fancies itself as some sort of catch-all, cutting-edge entertainment juggernaut, has bequeathed upon the world WWE Latest [iTunes link], a 99 cent App for the iPhone and iPod touch. It’s fairly basic, but should help those of you itching for, I don’t know, Diva photos or Raw results. You do know your iPhone has a perfectly viable Web browser, right? No, 99 cents isn’t a lot of money—it’s pretty much free, guys—but what would compel someone to pay one cent for something that’s freely available via Safari (or Opera Mini)? There’s not too much going on in the App. You’ve got News, Photos, and Videos to choose from, and that’s it. Again, you can find news, photos, and videos on the Internet just fine. For something that took two years Read More

Although criticized for its $15 price tag, MLB’s official iPhone app is a great all-rounder for fans, and an even better option for fans that have a Read More
JAiB Sport Apps roundup

Sports fans are awakening from hibernation, and so we sent a little e-mail around to all the members of the JAiB team asking what apps people were using to follow their favourite sports. Hit the jump to see the results, and feel free to leave your own favourite sport-related apps in the comments! Frank I would say Sportacular is my go to sports app for everything right now. The push notifications work great to keep me informed with latest game coverage. I wish there was support for boxing. I am a huge boxing fan and I still can’t believe there is not one sports app that covers boxing. I am hopeful that one day: ESPN, Sportacular, or Sportstap will feature boxing coverage. I can’t be the only boxing fan left, right? Patrick Good call on lack of a good boxing app.  I’d love to see Boxing News do one (if they Read More

Baseball fans have some amazing resources at their disposal. Whether it be one of the many tools available online or the mobile applications offered, there is no shortage of information, stats, and media available. MLB at Bat 2010 is the latest installment for the iPhone that brings up-to-date news and information on all your favorite teams, players, and standings. The app has different sections to browse through including the videos, news, and standings sections. One great feature in the app is that users can listen in on any game currently being played. The audio can be played in the background while browsing through the information available in the app. This was a great tool to have. When a player gets up to bat, it's nice to be able to listen while looking up the batter's statistics or latest news. It also lets you choose a favorite team which will automatically prioritize Read More

Enjoy background audio with MLB's At Bat
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Thu, 04 Mar 2010 21:15:00 UTC +00:00
As if I weren't excited enough to buy Major League Baseball's (MLB) iPhone app At Bat (here's an example of my previous gushing), they've added a new feature that makes it easy to listen to games while using other apps. While Apple doesn't allow 3rd party apps to run in the background on the iPhone or iPod touch,* Silicon Alley Insider notes that you can listen to audio in Mobile Safari while using other applications. It's this trick that MLB exploited with At Bat 2010. With the tap of a button, At Bat will push an audio stream to Mobile Safari. Note that MLB didn't come up with this trick, nor is their app the first to exploit it. ESPN Radio does it, as well as Scanner911 and FlyCast. Still, it's nice that MLB's devs acknowledged that some users might want to check email or hop onto Twitter while listening to Read More

MLB.com At Bat 2010 out now
Mini_discussion_bubble TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog - Posted Wed, 03 Mar 2010 01:15:00 UTC +00:00
Baseball season is almost here (Spring training starts this week), and with it comes a brand new version of Major League Baseball's great iPhone app. MLB.com At Bat 2010 is out now on the App Store, and for $14.99, you get the same great app you bought last year: live scores, streaming audio of all the games around the league, and available video of games via an in-app purchase. There's no lite version yet, but last year MLB released a free version sans audio and video, so if you just want the scores, you can wait and see when that one shows up. Meanwhile, if you want official baseball info beamed straight to your phone all year long, this app is the way to go. While there are definitely lots of other apps that will hook you up with scores and alerts for a much cheaper price, the MLB app is Read More

Heavy Hitter 510 4.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I bought this app last year and it saved my life! It was perfect for when I was at work and couldn't watch the game or if I was on the road ad could pick up the A's radio station. But MLB, what's up with the 5 dollar increase this year?? You should remove blackout restrictions or something if you're gonna raise the price! I wouldve given it 5 stars but the price increase is BS. just because you know people are going to pay it doesn't mean you shouldve raised it! GO A's!!
In love
Obama's Ohana 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
I think Im in love!! Been waiting forever for this app to come out!! Not all features working right now...gameday audio does NOT work, but the app has only been available for a few hours so I guess bugs are expected. I have faith this will get fixed though. Once everything starts running smoothly, the low price of $15 is a joke! Best money spent in a while!!! Go Braves!
NEW YORK YANKEES

TurdFerguson7 5.0 stars Version: 1.0.0
This app is just the best. I'm in wester NY and don't get to see 90% of the Red Sox games. This app let's me watch and listen to almost all of them! Love the recap video they came up with last year. The app just keeps getting better. Two things, they should show ALL games for my favorite team since I'm no where near the blackout zone...so that's dumb. Second, $15!? Really? I mean I bought it and everything, but the price goes up $5 every year. Just bitter. Peace.
