iPhone applications are no longer just toys for techies. There are now thousands of iPhone apps in the App Store designed for mainstream usage. Yesterday we looked at examples of health and fitness iPhone apps, today we check out what's available for a current big sporting event: the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. There were relatively slim pickings, but at least one Winter Olympics app that is a must-have for sports fans! The official 2010 Olympics app goes by the unwieldy title of 2010Guide - Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games: The Official Mobile Spectator Guide. The app is free and is described as "a location-aware schedule" for more than 2,000 sport and cultural events between 12-28 February, 2010. It lets you create a personalized itinerary, with the help of maps to over 80 venues. It features real-time results for every sport, news headlines, photos and twitter streams. For users actually attending

By Jeremy Sikora, Saturday, Feb 13, 2010 | The 2010 Winter Olympics officially began yesterday and if you want to keep up with your country to see how well they are performing, the NBC Olympics Mobile app [iTunes Link - Free] for iPhone and iPod touch is a great companion piece that offers a ton of great features. Why Canadian users would be omitted from viewing video is beyond us, especially since they are hosting all of the events. Surely some sort of deal could have been made for those of you in Canada? Now if you throw that major fail aside, you have a great app to give you your daily dose of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Screenshots after the break!

Are you ready for some winter gaming? The NBC Olympics app provides a full schedule and a whole lot more. After tonight's opening ceremonies, the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games will get down to business: skating, slaloming, bob-sledding, and all the rest of it. Of course, it's always a challenge keeping tabs on the various events, which is why I'm tickled to have the free NBC Olympics app on my iPhone. Among other things, it serves up a complete interactive event schedule. That schedule includes a scrolling TV guide so you can easily see what events are being aired during any given day--and on what station (NBC, CNBC, or Universal Sports). The app provides online listings as well, though as of now those schedules weren't available. You can also see the day's events in a list view, browse by category, and set up alerts to get the results of medal events.

The 2010 Olympics start tonight! And while I might not be so excited about curling, I'm looking forward to updates and athlete profiles on my iPhone. NBC's free Olympics app also has a social component, ideal for trash-talking Norwegian lugers. There are also updated medal counts, video (US-only), and sport-by-sport forecasts. The focus is predominantly on American competitors, so apologies in advance to international readers. Otherwise, though, if you're an Olympics junkie or nationalist smack-talker, it's definitely worth a download. [iTunes via IntoMobile]

The 2010 Winter Olympics kick off in Vancouver tonight, and for those of you who can’t be tied to your TV every night to watch the opening and closing ceremonies and competitions, here’s a compilation of sites where you can not only watch video highlights of the events but also see pictures, scores, medal counts and news from the Olympics: 1. NBC Olympics: NBC, which is covering the Olympics on TV, has also set up a site where you can catch the latest scores, news and select video coverage of the competitions (powered by Microsoft Silverlight). You can also see profiles of athletes and streams of Tweets from athletes on the U.S. Olympic teams. Unfortunately, it appears that NBC is severely limiting the streaming of competitions and the ceremonies to the general public, so video will most probably be comprised of short highlights. But if you are a cable subscriber, you will

This one is especially groovy for anyone living in the US. The NBC Olympics on AT&T app is totally free, and delivers all of the latest Olympic news to you on your iPhone, as it happens. There’s a definite US ‘flavor’ to the app, with particular attention given to US news and athletes. If you’re an American, this is your ideal app companion and guide while the games are going on! Pop it open and you’ll instantly be greeted with the latest news, great videos, and much more. Use it to monitor medal counts, or perhaps check NBC’s coverage schedule to see what events are coming up on the ‘ol tube. Browse athlete bios, learn about the games, or share content via Facebook and Twitter. This one is sadly getting mixed reviews in the App Store, but if you crave the American perspective on the games as they happen, the NBC

NBC... Seriously, until I can watch different events from this app, it's worthless. Do a little more research on what people want then come out with a quality app that doesn't embarrass you!
