A few weeks ago I wrote an article about the best Twitter apps for iPhone which got quite a bit of success, especially on Twitter. A few of you asked me to write the same time of article, only about the best RSS reader for iPhone. I was just going to write such an article but my friend Patrick from JAiB had the same idea and got a chance to write about some good iPhone RSS reader before I did. Patrick gave a quick look at 6 RSS apps for iPhone that sync with Google Reader and I suggest you read his article for more details about la creme de la creme of RSS reader apps for iPhone. He quickly reviews the following apps: UPDATE 04/24/2010: My favorite reader app is not Byline anymore. Reeder is now the best RSS reader for iPhone. Read my mini review of Reeder here. My

iPhone RSS apps have come a long way in recent months “ there are now some very strong choices available if you need a good RSS reader that syncs with Google Reader There used to be little or no choice when looking for a good iPhone RSS reader application, if you were a user who needed sync with Google Reader. For a long time, the Google Reader web app was head and shoulders above the rest in this area. I ‘ve kept up with a number of native iPhone RSS apps over recent months though, and I ‘m happy to say that by now there are a lot of good options out there “ even if you require full two-way sync with GReader. So I thought this might be a good time to give a brief rundown of 6 good iPhone RSS apps that provide full sync with GReader. As long as they’re iPhone (or iPod touch) related, they’re fair game. So who’s on deck this week and what are our picks? Find out after the break! This week I am picking Q Entertainment’s Lumines. This game came out a little while ago with poor fanfare due to the horrible controls. Good news? There is now and update that fixes these issues and this game is now a pleasure to play. You even have in-app purchasing for additional theme packs. The music is not as good as the original IMO, but still fun!! [$2.99 - iTunes link] BitFlip is a

NewsGator released todayNetNewsWire 3.2 for OS X. At the end of July, NewsGator announced the ending of its news feed subscription service and released a beta version of NetNewsWire 3.2 with Google Reader synchronization. The way NewsGator handled the ending of its service and migration to Google Reader left a lot to be desired. After sending out an email advising people to immediately switch to the beta, it received many complaints due to the numerous bugs and the large embedded ad in the bottom left of the window. The ad was removed for remaining betas — until today, when it was brought back at half the previous size. To remove the ad you must purchase a license for $10. I’m not sure if this is a special introductory price or not, but for me $10 is a great deal and buying a license was a no-brainer. As well as many bug fixes

This app looks real nice. It worked well for the first couple minutes. Now I can't even use it, it simply crashes all the time.
Unworthy update

Version: 2.0
Nice business move, saying that the price is going up in the near future so users upgrade quickly to the premium version instead of being able to test out the free version for a while so the developer gets to brag about download statistics, despite the fact that this is a crappy update relative to the previous version.
This whole platform is a mess run away
BGR
Version: 2.0
Many of us who are stuck with the newsgator platform are getting ripped apart by the lack of serious development and support form Newsgator. TRhe new iphone update doesn't let you STAR items that sync to anything, but it does let you save to instapaper or e-mail. Just f*&%king great. And their patheic support is appalling with month old announcements about Sept 10(!) deadlines with no real info and confusing instructions about having to sync via Google Reader. What's the point?
Loving it, except...

Version: 2.0
I love the app, but the 2 main problems I have are, first, the lack of an unread count badge on the icon on the home screen, that is a feature I loved in the last version that inexplicably disappeared in this version, second, is the fact that you can't decide how long read items are kept, I don't like having to sift through the read to find the unread, so basically if they had the new look and features with the old prefrence panel and badge count, this app would be PERFECT for me. Hopefully they won't ignore the problems this rendition of the app has and update based on the complaints here.
Basically. Read mediablogger's review.

I was getting impatient for this app, but when I saw how intuitive and quick it was, I went back to the store to write an app--lo and behold, I saw the premium version there and didn't hesitate to put down my $1.99.
Hype and not much more
dorcino
Version: 2.0
Bad interface, does not follow AppStore links, no image cache, ....., the list goes on.
Many other options out there, Byline, RSS Flash g, Doppler, Gazzate, newsstand which do so much more then this.
Maybe with updates could be good, now look elsewhere.
Go back to Version 1
bickity
Version: 2.0
I have spent the whole morning with version 2 and have to say that when I get home I am downgrading to 1 tonight. The new layout is cluttered and less responsive. Also, when you click on a headline the whole story does not appear, you have to click again. To top it off, the icon is juvenile.
Feeds gone
jwphillips
Version: 2.0
I like the updated icon and such but where are all my feeds from Newsgator? I don't use Google reader and now all my feeds are gone. So am I now forced to use Google?
At last a faster syncing google reader
Ewiser
Version: 2.0
I had been waiting for this to come out as I use NNW on my Mac. I tried newstand an with over 1000 feeds it way too slow to be of any use as it took to long to view feeds. This update let me read the feeds with out locking up or crashing which newstands big problem.
The bug I had was if viewing a web page when you went back to the feed the return to the main feed list button would be missing. Had to exit and restart to get the app working again.
This happened with the last version.
I am happy with the update an if the one bug can be fixed it would be 5 stars for me. I want speed and syncing back to the desktop.
Decent RSS reader
Stevevol
Version: 2.0
The good - very nice layout changes from v1. Still a nice simple layout. The sync to Google reader is very quick. When you star an article on the phone it comes up quick on GR.
The bad - The dropped support from NewsGator is lame. And after following instructions there was no importing of my NewsGator subscriptions to Google or the Mac version of NetNewsWire (and ultimately the phone). This just didnt work. You'd figure they'd have worked this out before bailing on us! I basically just resubscribed to all of my feeds within Google.
Wish list - the ability to add feeds within the app would be nice. Posting to Facebook would be too.
needs sharing

this must have worked just barely long enough to make it to the app store. crashes on load after just a few uses.
Disappointing

Version: 2.0
Update: Rather than reboot the phone and put up with the problems of this app I just bought Byline, which seems to succesfully do everything NNw us trying and failing to do.
-------
Only a couple days after buying this I'm already looking for another news reader. I was so happy to see this because version 1.x was kind of a dog, but this version is significantly worse. It crashes constany. In fact it is in a state right now where it won't even open, it just flashes a white screen and then quits— I guess I'll try restarting my phone. And then there are the little bugs like losing the ability to get back to the list of feeds. On top of that, the interface is noticably slow. This version is not ready for a public release. It's embarassingly bad.
Great update!!!! Worth price

Version: 2.0
I loved the old app. It was fast and simple. This update improves the interface and is slightly faster. Adds horizontal viewing of text. I think it's perfect now but would be nice if you could download articles for offline viewing.
Awesome remake

Version: 2.0
I don't review much applications, I usually feel that the reviews on the store are very similar to my opinion. So I don't feel like I have much to offer.
That is not the case with this application. At time of writing it has 24 reviews and a average rating of 3.5 stars and I'm afraid it might get worse. So I have to speak up and defend whats going on.
-To new users-
This is a very affordable google reader client with a desktop client also availiable for Windows and Mac. It's all free (with the exception of the premium verison here) and very fobust and feature rich. Google reader is the most popular online feed reader by far and has a ton of features.
- to users of previous verisions -
With the exception of a new engine nothing has changed. Google reader has all of the features of netnewswires online service and more. After it's all set up it's going to be a breeze to use. Google reader has a ton of clients on the desktop and a few on the iPhone (this one being the best and most affordable ad free one). I can see why some people are confused about the change but the developers felt it was a good idea for multiple reasons (I'm not here to speak for them so just check out their website) also if your a fan of their applications after the set up nothing will change, with the exception that you can now use google readers awesome web interface. As with all major overhauls this one might not have a bunch of features but im sure they are comming. This application has been MUCH more stable on my iPod touch then byline and much faster to load and start up.
Not to mention they nailed the interface! It's easy on the eyes and very readable. (good work guys) the desktop clients ui has not changed but like they said 4.0 is being worked on and I'm sure that it will have a spectactular user interface.
I'm very pleased with the application and love performance. To people having problems try restating after installing it. It might be a low memory on your iPhone or iPod touch.
Great work guys! I love it's now my primary reader.
Pretty update but very unstable
NorCalZman
Version: 2.0
The new update looked nice and updated with little problems. However, I was only able to play with it once or twice before it crashed, and continued to crash every time it started up. What use is this app if I can't read my content???? I'm going to check out newstand.
Looked OK
AdamofOz
Version: 2.0
I started using this app. The more I used it the more I liked it. However after a while the app crashed and has not been able to start again.
The interface, while the app worked, looked great. You can star items but you cannot share items or read others' shared items. This would be worth including.
The first order issue is stability. I've restarted the iPhone, uninstalled and reinstalled the app, but the app now crashes on launch.
It was a great app while it was working. I'd love it to be working again. It has potential to be the best RSS and Google Reader app.
3 Stars But Expecting More/Better
MediaBlogger
Version: 2.0
I have been very loyal to Newsgator/NNW but this past couple of months have sorely tested that loyalty.
It was a big mistake to send out a notice to switch over to Google Reader because I did that right away and found that I became very comfortable with Google Reader in my browser. I got to like GR even more when they added the "sendto" feature which is fabulous. So all of a sudden I sort of lost interest in the NNW desktop client.
Then they did not hit any of the self-imposed deadlines and there was very little communication as to the problem. Some but not alot. I continued to wait for the NNW iPhone app because I do not like GR on Mobile Safari too much (if they add "sendto" to mobile I might like it more). About a week ago I finally gave up started trying different native iphone apps that synced to GR and settled on Newstand. Which gave me what I thought I would be getting from NNW iPhone
Today we get the NNW iPhone app - finally.
And so far it is a let down. I cannot believe that there is no way for me to hide read items. This app should not have been released without that feature. In testing it today I find that I have to go through EVERY item to find random sprinklings of items where the time stamps force them into a random distribution throughout the "24 Hours" items list. That makes the app almost useless to a power user like me. The whole point is to get a quick scan of what's new not going hunting for buried treasure.
The design is B-O-R-I-N-G. We were told that the app would look the private-label versions for outlets like All Things Digital. It does not.
Why on earth do I have to open an item before I can star it. The idea of starring an item would be to skim down a list of unread items (something which cannot be done) and cherry-pick stories I want to spend time reading more carefully (something else which cannot be done).
At this point you might figure I am not using the app but for three reasons I am sticking with it.
1. Sync to Google Reader is excellent. Very fast. This is the single most important thing to get right.
2. Items starred in iPhone are correctly synced and starred within Google.
3. The developer of this app has a great track record, I expect they will fix these issues. So, what is two bucks to give a vote of confidence to a guy who has given us a great free RSS app since the iPhone launched?
Make me look smart fellas!!
No Sorting

Version: 2.0
Disappointed this application does not allow for sorting of feeds and folders.... who wants to go through them alphabetically?
All that waiting for nothing
DanAF
Version: 2.0
I've used NetNewsWire for Mac since you had to pay for it, and I still love it, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to look elsewhere now for an iPhone feed reader. While I was very excited about the move to Google syncing, I had always planned on staying with NNW-iPhone once the new version came out. Well, now that all the waiting (a month past when it was originally promised) is over, there hardly seem to be any worthwhile feature additions to be excited about. The addition of an add to Instapaper feature is huge for me, and I love it, but this feature can be invoked with the bookmarklet on the iPhone web interface of Google Reader. Other than that change, and some bug fixes (yes, it seems to run much more smoothly now, even with almost 100 feeds to load), nothing much seems to be different. The interface is marginally nicer looking, but not by much. I hurried to buy the premium version as soon as I saw that NNW 2.0 was available, but now I regret not trying out the free, ad-supported version first. I will most likely stay with the Google Reader web interface combined with NNW for desktop.
Have to get used to again

Version: 2.0
I liked the previous version better but it's a good upgrade just wish that it had a way to turn auto-rotation off. I like reading in portrait mode, that was what made it my favorite RSS reader.

The best free RSS reader becomes an OK paid app
DavidS84
Version: 2.0
I loved the free version of this reader, as it was pretty much perfect, aside from the fact that you couldn't add feeds from within the app. The new update is a little disappointing since I'm so used to how the old version worked and operated; I could just be resistant to change, but whatever. Basically NewsGator decided to discontinue its free RSS reader service, so they had to release a new app that syncs with Google Reader instead of their own service. The sync works, it's extremely easy to set up, and syncing is still fast. I'm just not liking the new look. It would be nice to have the ability to add new feeds from within the app... Hopefully NewsGator will keep updating this new version and we'll potentially see new features added in over time.

Version: 2.0
"Open in Browser" is in a submenu? It's the most commonly used button in an RSS reader (after "Mark All as Read")! I have the deepest respect for Brent Simmons, but that is just a monumentally stupid design decision - it makes it much more irritating to use. Meanwhile, in any major rewrite there are bound to be bugs - and this is no exception. I'm used to finishing up reading things on the desktop, grabbing my iPhone, and being able to pick up where I left off immediately. Right now, no luck - no matter what I do, I can't get the iPhone to reflect read/unread status changes I make on the desktop. Perhaps there's a delay involved in Google Reader; whatever the case, the product doesn't work as well as it did in 1.x. Syncing is also glacially slow. Still no way to mark all feeds as read in one swoop. Here's hoping 2.1 improves things, but we still have to wait for Apple's own glacial process to approve it.
Great update, happy to pay!

Version: 2.0
I'm *so* glad to have my NetNewsWire for iPhone back -- I've been using the Mac betas for a while, which no longer synced with NewsGator. It made using the iPhone app hard, since anything I read on the Mac would still be on the iPhone. But no more! This new NNW syncs with Google Reader as well!
Google Reader broke the shackles
James Baxter
Version: 2.0
Back when NewsGator's own syncing framework was the only game in town, the combination of their decent desktop client and horrible iPhone client was a lock-in. But now that they've offloaded syncing to Google, this mediocre update to the iPhone client can be ignored. I've been using Newsstand lately (primarily because NewsGator is delivering this update nearly a month after it was promised), and it's vastly superior on every level -- intelligent interface, wonderful customizability and completely transparent syncing using Google Reader. There's simply no reason to purchase NetNewsWire. It's gone from lame to unusable -- and the preference panel is a joke. Literally the only option is to enter your login information -- no customizability whatsoever. Your two bucks are better spent elsewhere.
Looks nice, syncs well.
