Numbers has everything you need to organize data, perform calculations, and manage lists. And you can do it all with just a few taps. Start with one of the beautiful Apple-designed templates and add your own tables and charts. Use predefined styles for tables, charts, images, and text to customize the look of your spreadsheet. Intelligent keyboards make data entry easy — they’re designed specifically for working with dates, formulas, text, or numbers. Perform simple or complex calculations with over 250 functions that let you create your own formulas using a dedicated function keyboard and built-in help. Forms make it easy to enter data in a table when you’re on the go. And, in full-screen view, Numbers instantly summarizes selected data in different ways — by sum, average, min, max, and count. With a quick swipe, you can even see your data as a chart.
When your spreadsheet is complete, show your work right on your iPad in full-screen view. You can also send your document to anyone via Mail, share it with iWork.com public beta, or export it and use iTunes File Sharing to move the file to your computer.

By Jennifer Allen on October 13th, 2011 iOS5 based updates for the flagship productivity apps from Apple. It’s kind of like Christmas for iOS device owners this week. With the huge wealth of new functionality that iOS5 brings, so the numerous app updates flow. In this case, it’s Apple’s flagship iWork applications that have profited from updates that incorporate iCloud functionality. Numbers, Pages and Keynote have all been updated to version 1.5 adding the ability to automatically store content in iCloud and thus keep documents up to date across all the user’s iOS devices. As well as that, documents can be downloaded to a PC or Mac at https://www.icloud.com/ as a number of different useful filetypes such as Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Pages ’09, Numbers ’09, Keynote ’09 and PDF format. In the case of Pages, voice dictation functionality has also been added to enable users to create and edit documents in

By Leanna Lofte, Wednesday, Oct 12, 2011 | One of the announced features of iCloud is the ability to keep all your files from Apple’s Pages, Numbers, and Keynote apps up to date. The update to those apps that bring this support is now available. I am particularly excited about using Numbers with iCloud. I use Numbers on my iPad to record my students’ grades, but sometimes I forget to bring my iPad to class. It never fails that those are the days that a student notices that I made a mistake and needs a grade changed. Before iCloud, I would make a note in my notes app and make the change later. Now, I’ll just open the spreadsheet with Numbers on my iPhone, make the change, and it will be reflected on the spreadsheet on my iPad. Win. You can create amazing documents and presentations on your iPhone, iPad, and

As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! This app was inspired by Leanna’s App for That post last week and I can see why she chose it. This app is superb for creating, sharing and syncing lists of to do items between users. Apple has yet to come out with a new version of iWork for the Mac, but it's been hard at work on the iOS edition of the productivity suite. The recent release of iWork on the iPhone and iPod touch included all three members of the iWork family in a diminutive format -- Keynote for presentations, Pages for word processing and page layout and Numbers for creating and updating spreadsheets and charts. I took a quick look at Numbers (US$9.99, universal app) on the iPhone just to see how well (or poorly) the app translated to the smaller screen format, and the results of my inspection are included in this short overview of the app. A gallery of screenshots is just below. I've been using spreadsheets on mobile devices since the Apple Newton MessagePad first came out in 1993, and for the most part, they've all suffered from the same issue.

Yesterday, Apple announced the availability of the iWork suite for iPhone and iPod touch. iWork consists of Apple's productivity software, Keynote, Pages and Numbers. All were originally desktop applications that made their way to the iPad. The question is: Does this work for you? The Plus Side We're not crazy enough to take our iPad or MacBook EVERYWHERE we go. That would just be silly. Our iPhone, on the other hand, that has to go with us 99.9 percent of the time. If you use public transportation, this can be useful. If you have to type something on on your way to work while riding the bus or the the train, just type something up on your iPhone. It takes up far less space than the iPad or a laptop and is much less of a hassle to use than a laptop for short durations. We've heard reports that

posted by Joe Rossignol on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 4:59 pm. Earlier today, in a rather surprising move, Apple released the iWork suite for the iPhone and iPod touch. It certainly wasn’t an expected announcement from the folks at Cupertino, especially considering the fact that the upcoming WWDC 2011 is set to be focused on upcoming software such as iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion. Nevertheless, the iWork suite consisting of the Pages, Keynote, and Numbers apps are now available on the iPhone and iPod touch for $9.99 each. iWork originally made its iOS debut on the iPad last January; those that purchased any of the three iWork apps for iPad can download the new iPhone and iPod touch counterpart for free from the App Store. Here’s a rundown of what you can expect from each app: I would still recommend using a Mac if you’re going to

Apple today released updates to their three iWork applications, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote making them Universal. This is a surprise move, one that we would have expected to be announced a week later durung the WWDC keynote. But these welcome updates bring some key productivity applications to the iPhone and iPod touch. Also included in the update is a document manager in each of the applications. The document manager, possibly a pre-cursor to something we’ll see in iOS 5, allows you to move documents to and from applications via iTunes, WebDAV, or iDisk. As most companies have looked to cut costs any way they could, the result has been a workforce equipped with underpowered devices, plastic enclosures and an outdated mobile paradigm that require most users to carry around a mouse and power cord to be of any real use. Most business users have simply had enough, and for a very affordable price, are starting to fund their own IT revolution by bringing their new iPads to the workplace. Here’s how you can do the same. Getting a new iPad 2 is only half the battle. Once you’re at work, before you can reclaim the time you once lost to reboots or hunting for the one free power outlet in the conference room, you realize you need to get connected to the corporate network. For the most part, establishing a new connection to your place of work’s wireless network is quite easy. If you’re

Apple continue to launch the iPad around the world, with 11 new countries added to the list this week. The lucky ones are Taiwan, Malaysia, South Korea, Sweden, Portugal, Poland, Norway, Hungary, Finland, Denmark and the Czech Republic, where both the Wi-Fi and 3G models should be available from your Apple dealer. A new TV advert has also made its debut this week, entitled ‘iPad is Amazing’. Although it doesn’t break with tradition too much, this new ad highlights some of the new features of iOS 4.2 rather than concentrating on a particular app genre as recent ads have done. It features: We’ve come to expect Pages and some of the standard apps to make an appearance, but the odd-one-out here is AirStrip, a very specific medical application designed for doctors working in hospitals where a particular piece of equipment is being used. That’ll appeal to the person on the street!

Apple released a fresh update of its iPad productivity suite iWork yesterday, and what makes it worthwhile is that it finally makes Keynote a useful presentation tool. This update supports core iOS 4.2 features such as AirPrint and multitasking. The update also brings better PDF exporting, and provides some fixes for font issues that arise on export. As mentioned, the update finally brings the iPad into the arena of truly powerful presentation tools: Keynote for iPad 1.3 now supports a presenter’s view of sorts. However, you’re limited in your choices: you can choose to display current, next, current and next, and current and notes. There’s no option for current and next, and notes, which a setting I use on OS X Keynote all the time. Since previous versions only showed a black screen with slide advancement buttons, though, even this limited implementation is wondrous news. There’s still no support for any sort of

One of my biggest gripes about iWork for iPad has been the absolutely unwarranted pain it was to get files onto and off of the device. For a company that prides itself on the user experience, file transfers from the web into Apple’s own suite of productivity apps was downright embarrassing. The iWork 1.2 update for iPad brings about a whole host of welcome improvements, the best one in my opinion being the ability to import and export directly from iDisk, or any WebDAV-supported virtual disk. Dropbox isn’t WebDAV, unfortunately, and I wouldn’t hold my breath for Dropbox support. Until now, Pages was the only one of the three apps that could export to its MS Office counterpart, but now, all three can export to Office-compatible formats. I’m curious to see how well this will work with Keynote, since most Keynote files I’ve exported to PowerPoint look like they were victims

With the undeniable popularity and success of the iPhone 4 (despite the antenna debacle), iPad, and ever-increasing Mac sales, Apple is gaining customers faster than ever. If you're thinking about making the switch, this could be your perfect setup. Component one: iPhone 4 Now in its fourth iteration, Apple's iPhone has forever changed the mobile phone landscape by thrusting touch-screen technology to the tips of every tech geek's tongue and every consumer's wish list. Despite its early and somewhat overblown issues, iPhone 4 has had record-setting sales. With the exception of the complaints from a vocal minority regarding its antenna, critics love the iPhone 4. Think of iPhone 4 as your mobile communications component in this setup. With it, you can send text messages; make calls; send e-mail, instant messages, and tweets; update Facebook; and check in with Foursquare. Of course, you can play games and download other apps to the

According to a report today published by Business Insider, Apple has generated somewhere around $3 million in revenue from their iWork iPad apps — which includes Pages, Keynote, and Numbers — since the iPad’s U.S. launch early in April. They believe if this trend continues, the suite of apps could bring in $40 million per year. So how did they come up with these numbers? Let’s take a quick look. Business Insider apparently spoke with developers with top-ten paid iPad apps, and based on those discussions, they were able to conclude that the top paid iPad app moves around 7,500 units on a Saturday or Sunday. Weekdays are quite a bit lower, with about 2,500 units being sold per day. Assuming that each of the three apps has had about the same number of apps sold, and that each has been at or near the top of the paid apps list,

The folks at Business Insider (BI) are reporting that Apple's iWork apps for iPad -- Pages, Keynote and Numbers -- have likely generated US$3 million in revenue since the iPad was launched in the US. If the trend continues, the apps could bring in $40 million per year. Where did BI get their numbers? Some broad assumptions, honestly. Discussions with developers who consistently have apps in the top ten suggested that top paid iPad apps will sell about 7,500 copies on a Saturday or Sunday, and about 2,500 on a weekday. At $10/each, that works out to approximately $825,000 per week. Admittedly, it's "a very rough estimate." The iWork apps have been among the top 10 paid apps since the iPad's release in the US. An estimate, yes, but it does illustrate an important point: users want "serious" work apps for the iPad. Sure, the initial user base was largely fans

Let’s set aside the question of whether you should get an iPad and suppose you already bought one last weekend. You probably floated home and loaded it with a few whiz-bang apps and maybe even passed it around to your friends. At some point in all the euphoria, you may also have wondered whether this device is just a trophy or something you can actually use. Such self-doubts can be easily cast aside, providing you delve a little more deeply into the App Store than the Top 100 list — and are ready to open the wallet again. If you budget around $100 for a few new and upgraded apps, you can easily make the iPad into much more of a constant companion than something you just trot out when the neighbors are watching. Start with productivity apps, because a mobile device is most valuable when it lets you work anytime,

Most iPad owners in need of a good spreadsheet app automatically turn to Apple’s Numbers, which is fair considering it is loaded with all kinds of templates, charts, and tables to spice up those boring spreadsheets. One necessary feature that the app is missing, however, is the ability to export Excel files and not just view them. This has made quite a few early Numbers adopters a little angry to say the least. Longtime Mac developer Mariner Software is looking to clean up Apple’s little mess by providing a cheaper and Excel-exporting capable alternative in Mariner Calc for iPad. Mariner Calc for iPad may not be as flashy as Numbers, but it will definitely get the job done at a fraction of the cost. Mariner Calc‘s most important feature when compared to Numbers is its ability to not only view but edit and export Excel files. Files can also be wirelessly

Numbers for iPad has forever changed the way I look at spreadsheets. The amount of thought put into the implementation of this app is really stunning. The built-in Apple templates, tabbed folder interface, intelligent keyboard, and built-in functions make the creation and management of very stylish and professional spreadsheets really enjoyable and easy. The fundamental viewpoint from which users should approach this app is that if you think you could move something or change something with your fingers, you probably can. The way Apple has incorporated style, finish, and simplicity into an incredibly intuitive and powerful content creation tool is truly a magnificent feat. This app is a major advancement in office productivity suites and a major win all around for Apple.
