It's January 6th, 2012, and today marks the end of the TUAW Best of 2011 awards. This was a massive undertaking, with 25 separate categories all requiring their own nominations and voting from our readers. We've learned some lessons for next year's event -- start earlier, watch for astroturfing in the nominations, drop some unpopular categories -- and the Best of 2012 will be even better. The editorial staff here at TUAW agreed with many of the reader picks, but we had our own opinions on some others. We want to thank all of the thousands of TUAW readers who took time to consider their favorite accessories and apps, nominate them for an award, and then vote in the competition. Without further ado, here's the full list of winners as well as our picks for the TUAW Best of 2011: Editor picks: 13" and 11" MacBook Air, 13" MacBook Pro Peripheral

By Jennifer Allen on October 13th, 2011 iOS5 based updates for the flagship productivity apps from Apple. It’s kind of like Christmas for iOS device owners this week. With the huge wealth of new functionality that iOS5 brings, so the numerous app updates flow. In this case, it’s Apple’s flagship iWork applications that have profited from updates that incorporate iCloud functionality. Numbers, Pages and Keynote have all been updated to version 1.5 adding the ability to automatically store content in iCloud and thus keep documents up to date across all the user’s iOS devices. As well as that, documents can be downloaded to a PC or Mac at https://www.icloud.com/ as a number of different useful filetypes such as Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Pages ’09, Numbers ’09, Keynote ’09 and PDF format. In the case of Pages, voice dictation functionality has also been added to enable users to create and edit documents in

By Leanna Lofte, Wednesday, Oct 12, 2011 | One of the announced features of iCloud is the ability to keep all your files from Apple’s Pages, Numbers, and Keynote apps up to date. The update to those apps that bring this support is now available. I am particularly excited about using Numbers with iCloud. I use Numbers on my iPad to record my students’ grades, but sometimes I forget to bring my iPad to class. It never fails that those are the days that a student notices that I made a mistake and needs a grade changed. Before iCloud, I would make a note in my notes app and make the change later. Now, I’ll just open the spreadsheet with Numbers on my iPhone, make the change, and it will be reflected on the spreadsheet on my iPad. Win. You can create amazing documents and presentations on your iPhone, iPad, and

By Bonnie Eisenman on September 12th, 2011 As a college student, my iPod goes with me everywhere. Here are some apps sure to help any college student with their busy life. From textbook apps to alarm clocks, iPhones and iPads can change the way students live and study. iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads abound on college campuses, and for good reason. iOS devices are great anyway, but for college students, there are myriad ways in which an iOS device can make life easier. When it comes to studying textbooks, taking notes in lecture, or even waking up to start the day—chances are there’s an app for that. There are far too many useful apps to count, but here I’d like to list just a few apps sure to help college students manage their busy lives. Textbooks Paper textbooks may still be king, but e-readers are increasingly creating a presence in college

As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! As much as I love productivity apps, if you spend all your time playing with them, well, you’re not being very productive, are you? That’s the main reason I try to keep things as simple and streamlined as possible. And since my email inbox is very often a makeshift to-do list by necessity, there’s a handful of apps out there that extend that metaphor. One that I’m currently using and liking is Captio. Yesterday, Apple announced the availability of the iWork suite for iPhone and iPod touch. iWork consists of Apple's productivity software, Keynote, Pages and Numbers. All were originally desktop applications that made their way to the iPad. The question is: Does this work for you? The Plus Side We're not crazy enough to take our iPad or MacBook EVERYWHERE we go. That would just be silly. Our iPhone, on the other hand, that has to go with us 99.9 percent of the time. If you use public transportation, this can be useful. If you have to type something on on your way to work while riding the bus or the the train, just type something up on your iPhone. It takes up far less space than the iPad or a laptop and is much less of a hassle to use than a laptop for short durations. We've heard reports that

posted by Joe Rossignol on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 4:59 pm. Earlier today, in a rather surprising move, Apple released the iWork suite for the iPhone and iPod touch. It certainly wasn’t an expected announcement from the folks at Cupertino, especially considering the fact that the upcoming WWDC 2011 is set to be focused on upcoming software such as iOS 5 and Mac OS X Lion. Nevertheless, the iWork suite consisting of the Pages, Keynote, and Numbers apps are now available on the iPhone and iPod touch for $9.99 each. iWork originally made its iOS debut on the iPad last January; those that purchased any of the three iWork apps for iPad can download the new iPhone and iPod touch counterpart for free from the App Store. Here’s a rundown of what you can expect from each app: I would still recommend using a Mac if you’re going to

Apple heeded the call with mobile versions of iWork, but Microsoft Office still remains king of document software. The popular .doc is still the number one format with a bullet, and a variety of office-based software has arisen to handle it. In our special cage-match office productivity App Showdown, we'll go three rounds to find out who is the undisputed master of the mobile domain, Apple or its competitors. By Chad Garrett, Friday, Jan 28, 2011 | When it comes to document editing and creation on the iPad, two solutions really stand out: Apple’s iWork Suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote) and DataViz’s Documents to Go app. Which is better? Well, I wish the decision was that easy. Both apps (or set of apps in iWork’s case — you can buy each separately) allow you to edit and create documents, spreadsheets and presentations. iWork also has the advantage of using Apple’s iWork format and Office format as well and is beautifully designed. Documents to Go does a stellar job of rendering and editing Microsoft’s Office format. Let’s begin by looking at each app a little more in-depth. I will focus primarily on the differences of how each application handles their word processing since this is the number one reason people would use these apps and, you probably don’t want a mini-novel

Apple have released another iPad TV advert, this time entitled ‘iPad is Iconic’. While this may indeed be the case, this latest commercial isn’t as iconic as others, and perhaps doesn’t show the range of the iPad’s apps that others have. For those interested in the apps featured, here is a rundown: As you can see, there is a more professional feel to the apps featured, with no games featured at all. A new TV advert has also made its debut this week, entitled ‘iPad is Amazing’. Although it doesn’t break with tradition too much, this new ad highlights some of the new features of iOS 4.2 rather than concentrating on a particular app genre as recent ads have done. It features: We’ve come to expect Pages and some of the standard apps to make an appearance, but the odd-one-out here is AirStrip, a very specific medical application designed for doctors working in hospitals where a particular piece of equipment is being used. Apple released a fresh update of its iPad productivity suite iWork yesterday, and what makes it worthwhile is that it finally makes Keynote a useful presentation tool. This update supports core iOS 4.2 features such as AirPrint and multitasking. The update also brings better PDF exporting, and provides some fixes for font issues that arise on export. As mentioned, the update finally brings the iPad into the arena of truly powerful presentation tools: Keynote for iPad 1.3 now supports a presenter’s view of sorts. However, you’re limited in your choices: you can choose to display current, next, current and next, and current and notes. There’s no option for current and next, and notes, which a setting I use on OS X Keynote all the time. National Novel Writing Month, or, National Stop Procrastinating and Write Month, is soon upon us. This year marks the first time the iPad is available during the prose-fest. Writing tools are near and dear to my heart, because the time spent researching and writing about said tools is a fantastic way to avoid actually writing my fiction. With that in mind, I’m going to take a look at writing tools I’ve found that are suited for NaNo. I’ve laid down a few criteria. To be considered, an app must easily sync or transfer natively with a cloud service (I’m assuming you’re going to be doing the bulk of your writing at home, and the iPad is the “writing at lunch” option). Since the goal for NaNo is to churn out 50,000 words, the app should have a word count feature, although there are two notable exceptions to this rule that made

I posted a few days ago that October is turning out to be a wonderful month for writers who enjoy trying out new word processing software. Today I want to tell you about an iPad app. There are a ton of word processing apps for the iPad and, in my opinion, Pages is still the best by far due to the rich feature set. This might change, however, if Apple ever decides to open up their styled-text and other iWork suite APIs to developers. Until then, it's hard for one iPad word processor to really distinguish itself from the next in a significant way. One app that has, however, is called iA Writer. iA Writer has two features that I haven't seen in other iPad word processors. One of those features is called Focus Mode. While in Focus Mode, everything except for the three most recent lines of text are blurred out.

One of my biggest gripes about iWork for iPad has been the absolutely unwarranted pain it was to get files onto and off of the device. For a company that prides itself on the user experience, file transfers from the web into Apple’s own suite of productivity apps was downright embarrassing. The iWork 1.2 update for iPad brings about a whole host of welcome improvements, the best one in my opinion being the ability to import and export directly from iDisk, or any WebDAV-supported virtual disk. Dropbox isn’t WebDAV, unfortunately, and I wouldn’t hold my breath for Dropbox support. Until now, Pages was the only one of the three apps that could export to its MS Office counterpart, but now, all three can export to Office-compatible formats. I’m curious to see how well this will work with Keynote, since most Keynote files I’ve exported to PowerPoint look like they were victims

Rather than using a voiceover to describe what the iPad can do, this ad relies on demonstration instead. The image of hands interacting with the iPad is a strong one, and certainly brings the control system to the forefront, while the chosen apps appeal to a broad range of tastes and ages. Here are the apps featured in the ad: These are all great apps certainly, but aside from Safari that’s used to demonstrate Twitter, and Flipboard, new iPad owners are going to have to splash out for the rest of them, which isn’t very clear in the advert and could prove somewhat disappointing to the new buyer. Or does everyone pretty

With the undeniable popularity and success of the iPhone 4 (despite the antenna debacle), iPad, and ever-increasing Mac sales, Apple is gaining customers faster than ever. If you're thinking about making the switch, this could be your perfect setup. Component one: iPhone 4 Now in its fourth iteration, Apple's iPhone has forever changed the mobile phone landscape by thrusting touch-screen technology to the tips of every tech geek's tongue and every consumer's wish list. Despite its early and somewhat overblown issues, iPhone 4 has had record-setting sales. With the exception of the complaints from a vocal minority regarding its antenna, critics love the iPhone 4. Think of iPhone 4 as your mobile communications component in this setup. With it, you can send text messages; make calls; send e-mail, instant messages, and tweets; update Facebook; and check in with Foursquare. Of course, you can play games and download other apps to the

It seems that Apple is working to bring the iWork apps to the iPhone. Now available for the iPad, Keynote, Pages and Numbers were among the top sellers for many weeks after their release, making some users eager for iPhone editions. While browsing the Canadian online Apple Store, Engadget noticed that, if you select an unlocked iPhone, you see a blurb about "iWork for iPhone." Not to mention the "Open in Keynote" prompt that appeared in Mail. 9to5 Mac ups the ante with alleged screenshots of a beta of Pages for the iPhone. Citing a "tipster," 9to5 reports that the apps will be universal and work across devices. Make sense to us, though I don't know if I'd be willing to scale down to that small screen after using Pages, etc. on an iPad.

iWork users rejoice! Apple is updating Pages, Numbers and Keynote for the iPad. A quick check at the app store or through iTunes should get you all sparkly and new. In Pages, one of the big fixes is that the tool and ruler and now available in Landscape view. That's a biggy because you had to be in portrait view to see any of those tools in version 1.0. Apple has also added some additional language support in the apps, and done some work to get better compatibility with Microsoft Word documents. Here's the details for all the updated apps, which appear to have fixed some of the worst complaints people had. All the apps have included language support for French, German, Japanese, Dutch, Italian, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Spanish. Pages fixes are mainly about how nicely it plays with Microsoft Word documents. There are also some cosmetic cleanups. Numbers also

According to a report today published by Business Insider, Apple has generated somewhere around $3 million in revenue from their iWork iPad apps — which includes Pages, Keynote, and Numbers — since the iPad’s U.S. launch early in April. They believe if this trend continues, the suite of apps could bring in $40 million per year. So how did they come up with these numbers? Let’s take a quick look. Business Insider apparently spoke with developers with top-ten paid iPad apps, and based on those discussions, they were able to conclude that the top paid iPad app moves around 7,500 units on a Saturday or Sunday. Weekdays are quite a bit lower, with about 2,500 units being sold per day. Assuming that each of the three apps has had about the same number of apps sold, and that each has been at or near the top of the paid apps list,

The folks at Business Insider (BI) are reporting that Apple's iWork apps for iPad -- Pages, Keynote and Numbers -- have likely generated US$3 million in revenue since the iPad was launched in the US. If the trend continues, the apps could bring in $40 million per year. Where did BI get their numbers? Some broad assumptions, honestly. Discussions with developers who consistently have apps in the top ten suggested that top paid iPad apps will sell about 7,500 copies on a Saturday or Sunday, and about 2,500 on a weekday. At $10/each, that works out to approximately $825,000 per week. Admittedly, it's "a very rough estimate." The iWork apps have been among the top 10 paid apps since the iPad's release in the US. An estimate, yes, but it does illustrate an important point: users want "serious" work apps for the iPad. Sure, the initial user base was largely fans

By Chad Garrett, Monday, May 3, 2010 | Having a virtually full-fledged word processor like Apple’s Pages iWork app [$9.99- iTunes Link] on the iPad is a big deal. There has been a lot of discussion, however, about how Pages would work on the iPad. How do I transfer/ sync documents? How will my formatting be effected? I had to use Pages to do some document editing for a house flyer for our home (we are in the process of selling). I figured what a great opportunity to give Pages a spin. First, I had to get the document on the iPad. Email or iTunes? The Pages file was 12MB so I opted to transfer it via iTunes. The process was simple; I selected the Pages app from the bottom of the Apps tab with my iPad attached to my iMac. I clicked the add files button and chose my Pages

Let’s set aside the question of whether you should get an iPad and suppose you already bought one last weekend. You probably floated home and loaded it with a few whiz-bang apps and maybe even passed it around to your friends. At some point in all the euphoria, you may also have wondered whether this device is just a trophy or something you can actually use. Such self-doubts can be easily cast aside, providing you delve a little more deeply into the App Store than the Top 100 list — and are ready to open the wallet again. If you budget around $100 for a few new and upgraded apps, you can easily make the iPad into much more of a constant companion than something you just trot out when the neighbors are watching. Start with productivity apps, because a mobile device is most valuable when it lets you work anytime,

Apple's iPad hasn't even been out a week, so I'll grant you that it is a little early to be doing a deep analysis on who the winners and losers are in the app store. But I was interested to learn that two of the top 25 selling applications for the new touchscreen device -- at least as of this afternoon -- were developed by Seattle startups. PopCap Games currently ranks 14th in the paid apps category for its $9.99 game "Plants vs. Zombies HD." And not too far behind is BigOven, which ranks 24th with its app "170,000 Recipes and Grocery List." "It's pretty early to be touting stats/factoids," said PopCap's Garth Chouteau. "But you could certainly say that between the iPad launch and continuing success of the iPhone adaptation, (Plants vs. Zombies) is our hottest App Store/iTunes product of 2010 -- so far. Not bad considering Bejeweled 2/iPhone continues

I am floored by the functionality that was designed into arguably the best word processor on the market. Marketing for my work has always been so much easier with Pages, but touch functionality will really speed things up. I am looking forward to losing the mouse in this app. The Page Navigator loop is a great innovation. The export to iWork.com feature is also going to be a big benefit for sharing documents easily. Looking forward to using this App frequently.
Absolutely beautiful document creator.

The frank simplicity of this Pages for iPad app has really blown me away. The finish and style of every minute part of this app has been perfected to the utmost. The elegant built-in Apple styles and terrific fullscreen landscape mode make completing a document faster than ever. The soft keyboard is fabulous in landscape mode for nearly all documents, and is even fairly useable in portrait mode as well. The ways in which you will find yourself developing documents with this app will have you wanting to use nothing else but this. The built-in thesaurus is an extra tool that is exceptionally handy and very intuitive to use. Overall a fabulous app and well worth purchasing. Thumbs up!
Way to go Steve
