Posted 11/29/2011 at 10:30am | by J Keirn-Swanson RSS is a great way of catching up with news in this fast-paced world. We've taken a look at apps that turn your RSS feeds into magazine layouts, but maybe you don't have an iPad or maybe you want a more stripped down list for your news. Whichever your flavor, there are more than enough to choose from. All three apps this week feature list organization and caching of articles for offline reading, but what sets them apart and turns a good RSS reader into a great one? Developer C.B. Liu has one of the highest rated RSS readers on the market and no wonder. Fast, slick, intuitive, Feeddler handles your feeds with grace. You'll need a Google Reader account to get started, and that's really still the fastest way to add RSS feeds to your account, though Feeddler allows you to add

We’ve already covered readers in general, from eBooks to comics, but this time we really wanted to focus on RSS news. So if you want to keep your syndication really simple, and yourself up to date with the latest new, read on for TiPb’s top 5 most recommended RSS feed readings apps for iOS. NetNewsWire is the granddaddy of iOS RSS readers and is still a favorite for many. It syncs with Google Reader, and while in version past that was a laborious process, improvements to both the app and iOS have made it much smoother these days. By Rene Ritchie, Monday, May 9, 2011 | TiPb’s developer spotlights are like DVD/iTunes Extras for the App Store — a weekly look behind the scenes at the programers and designers that bring you the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps and games you love. This week Rene talks with Marc Edwards of Bjango. What can we call you? Marc Edwards. What can we call your company? Bjango. Where are you situated? Melbourne, Australia. Yes, that giant, mostly empty island at the end of the earth. It’s a great place to live, provided you avoid the killer snakes, killer spiders, killer sharks and various other nasties. What apps, other than your own, do you currently use the most often? 1Password, Brushes, The Early Edition, Reeder (yes, two RSS readers) and Our Choice. There’s some obvious and potentially boring choices in there, but those are the current apps I’ve been using daily

Tired of tapping that dreaded refresh button whenever you want an update to the latest happenings in your Reeder app? Fret no longer; the perfect jailbreak tweak for you has arrived in the form of Pull To Sync for Reeder. As its name implies so accurately, Pull To Sync for Reeder throws an additional syncing/refreshing option into the mix for your favorite Google Reader client. Now instead of solely relying on that little refresh button in the bottom right-hand corner, you can let your thumbs do the talking with pull down to refresh capabilities… As you can probably gather, there’s really not a lot to this tweak besides the alternative style of refreshing. One thing that did particularly bug me is the fact that you can only use the pull down feature when you’re in Reeder’s main view. Hence, you’re not going to be able to use pull down to refresh in ‘All

Posted 02/01/2011 at 7:01am | by J.R. Bookwalter There are plenty of great choices to read web content distraction-free, and two of the best are teaming up for the launch of the new Readability.com website, with the developer of Instapaper providing an official mobile app in the near future. Instapaper developer Marco Arment announced via his blog on Tuesday that he’s teamed up with Arc90, creators of the popular Readability service. If you’re not familiar with Readability, it’s a slick bookmarklet “which performs an article-text parse of any web page and displays the results in a highly readable, adjustable format.” (Think of Instapaper’s own text view, or the Reader function in Apple’s Safari 5.) “Today, they launched an entirely new Readability service,” Arment announced. “You pay a small fee each month, and they give most of the proceeds to the authors of the pages you choose (by using the Readability bookmarklet

Bookwalter There are plenty of RSS readers for iOS, but one of the most beloved is Reeder, available in versions optimized for the iPhone/iPod touch as well as the iPad. Now the developer is taking on the Mac with a slick new beta. TechCrunch is reporting that Reeder for Mac is now available from developer Silvio Rizzi, following up the success of the same app for the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad. For now, Reeder for Mac is a free public beta (designated as “Reeder 1.0 Draft 1”) that’s missing a few features, but the stylish app appears to lose very little in the transition from iOS to the Mac. If you’re not familiar with Reeder, it’s an RSS feed reader that syncs with Google Reader. The user interface shown above will be familiar to anyone using the iOS versions of Reeder, grouping your Google

As it turns out, you don’t have to wonder any longer -- Apple has created a section dedicated to what they consider the best 50 apps. Opinions may vary from user to user as to what constitutes the best iOS apps, but Apple has some ideas of their own and they’ve created a new page of the best 50 in their opinion which they call the App Store Essentials Hall of Fame. It’s a great place for first-time users to immerse themselves in their new iOS device purchase with what many of us would consider the best apps ever made. “More than two years since launch, we’re many apps wiser,” Apple’s gold-hued banner (seen above) reads. “Presenting our ongoing collection of the very best of the best.”

With the introduction of FaceTime video calls, multitasking, and the high resolution Retina display, the iPhone 4 has moved even further away from being just a powerful phone and web-surfing device. Now more than ever, the iPhone is a true lifestyle-enhancing accessory. Between the built-in features and the hundreds of thousands of options in the App Store, not to mention a few key accessories, the iPhone 4 can be figuratively formed and changed to fit your daily needs, whether you’re planning your daily commute, knocking out items on your to-do list, or simply looking to try a new restaurant. Reeder for iPhone ($2.99 – review) is far and away my favourite RSS app on the iPhone, so seeing this tweet from @viticci teasing the upcoming Mac version is pretty exciting. I really do mean teasing, too — there are no other details available on the Reeder website, but for the announcement and a silhouette of an iMac. I’ll definitely be checking the Mac version out now that we cover all things i-related, but I also wonder how long I’ll actually use it. I try to run a pretty tight ship on the Mac and have many of my “apps” loaded up as tabs within Chrome. The Mac app will have to be pretty amazing for me to add another icon to my dock, but, then again, if anybody can impress me with a clean, usable interface worthy of a native app, it’ll be the devs who bowled me over with

Here’s the ones we found in the last week or so, and if you haven’t checked for updates, go check that update tab and let us know if you caught something we didn’t! Osfoora has taken the place as my favorite Twitter client (for now anyways). They received an iOS4 update we covered a few weeks back, but this one is even better. It adds full retina display support for the iPhone 4 and boy is it pretty. The whole app got somewhat of a facelift as well. The text really pops and the main menus have been revamped. So if you haven’t updated, go for it, or if

Mobile devices like the iPhone and the iPad have been a real springboard for designers and developers. Because we can now literally have our computers in our pockets, our favorite applications and websites and services can now come with us. However, when designing for mobile devices, it’s important to focus on the size and resolution of the device’s screen, as well as how the user interacts with the device. You can make a really beautiful looking application that ultimately fails because it is difficult for the user to use and isn’t optimized for a touch screen. Sometimes the best way to get started thinking about application design is to look at what others have already produced. For your inspiration, here are 10 iPhone and iPad apps that have both beautiful and

posted by Abcmsaj on Friday, June 4, 2010 at 1:45 pm. I sure am. And with the majority of RSS apps on the App Store only JUST jumping on the “Import from Google Reader” bandwagon, I didn’t hold out much hope for a decent, non-cluttered RSS reader coming anytime soon. The iPad’s been out for 2 months, and I only got mine a week ago (living in the UK) – The two apps I’ve been using are Pulse News Reader and The Early Edition – Both pretty good readers (especially since Pulse v1.1 has been featured on Gizmodo, the sales in the UK store have gone through the roof) However, they lack a lot of features. They’ve only JUST added the feature to import from Google Reader; before, you had to manually add all of your feeds, and I have a lot. So I’m thankful for this feature. But that’s

When we posted our comparison of RSS Readers for the iPad, one notable missing entry was Reeder. Being my favorite reader for the iPhone [App Store, $2.99], I’ve been waiting impatiently for Reeder to release an iPad version. Unfortunately, the folks over at MacStories seem to be a bit closer with the developers of Reeder because they posted a sneak peak at the upcoming iPad app. I’ll admit I’m extremely jealous, but it is great to see that Reeder for the iPad is coming soon. In addition, Reeder for the iPhone is about to get an update. Reeder 2 is expected to be a free upgrade (in other words, don’t wait to go buy it if you don’t already own a copy) and adds several exciting features. Version 2 will sync articles from people you follow, adds even more services, offers a new higher contrast setting, plus includes a few other

A few months ago I wrote about the best RSS readers for iPhone. At the time, Byline was my favorite, even though it was missing a couple important features such as being able to share articles on Twitter. The Byline app description in the App Store has been saying for months they are working on version 3 which will add tons of new features. Turns out they “worked on it” for so long that someone else outdid them. My new favorite iPhone RSS reader is Reeder 2. I’m not going to get too much into details but I’d rather give a short and sweet review of it. Pros: Cons: See, many pros and very few cons. Reeder definitely took over the Byline spot in my iPhone dock. If you’re in the market for an RSS reader that syncs with Google Reader, then give Reeder a try. At $2.99, it is the

(Danke, David!)

One of about a half dozen tabs that I always have open in my web browser on my desktop or laptop is Google Reader. Even though other sources such as Twitter and Facebook are now better at uncovering news more quickly, Reader remains a great catch-all backup plan for the content I read online. But I’m increasingly finding myself browsing for news on my iPhone. And sadly, all the Google Reader applications that have launched over the past few years have, in my opinion, sucked. And I’m hardly the only one who thinks that. But that changes, today. An app called Reeder, by Silvio Rizzi, has always been a nice-looking app that syncs with Google Reader. Unfortunately, it has also been clunky, and slow, and lacking some features such as state-saving. But the latest version, 2.0, which just went live in the App Store last night, corrects all the issues I

With a number of options and myriad features on multiple platforms, it can be a daunting task to even get started. In this article we’ll take a look at some of what you might consider when shopping for a news reader. Do you need cutting edge, up to the second information at your fingertips? You might want to look at “ticker” style applications that scroll new headlines continuously. Or maybe you need to monitor a large number of feeds but are primarily interested in a subset of specific keywords or topics. In that case, you’d want to look for

Great start but a major bug and missing features

In general I love the way that this app looks and works. Both beautiful and easy to use. There is one huge bug that I've run into though.
If I get a SMS while I'm in Reeder it somehow hides the notification and then you can't quit the app because the iPhone is waiting for you to respond to the notification (that is invisible). The only way I've gotten the SMS notification to become visible is by holding down my home button to activate Apple's voice command UI, telling it to call someone, then ending the call. After that the notification finally appears long enough for me to click on Reply or Ignore.
Reeder is also missing a couple of key features to really shine. View persistence (opening on whatever article or list I was on when I last quit the app) is a necessity IMO. There are too many times when u have to leave the app in the middle of an article to do something else. When u are able to go back to read it not only is it no longer open to that article but it has also been marked as read so it's more difficult to find!
The other problem I have is the syncing takes forever! I have fairly large amount of starred articles and it seems to take a couple minutes to just sync those every single time the app is opened!
I really hope the developers keep improving this app because it is truly a great start. If the few issues it has are fixed I could definitely see this becoming one of those apps that I recommend to all my friends. :)
Changed the Way I Read RSS

The greatest feature of Reeder is its ability to sync with Google Reader. Granted, syncronization with Google is nothing unique, but added to the fluid interface of Reeder - you have one solid experience. Quickly move between read articles, starred articles, and a list of your feeds. This makes it really easy to quickly flick through any news you have missed, and get back to reading articles when you might have more time later. I use this in conjunction with an RSS reader on my Mac to keep all of my read changes in sync between the two devices. I used NetNewsWire 2.0 on my iPhone prior to finding Reeder and the one feature I really miss is the ability to share an article via Twitter. If anything, I'd like the ability to quickly copy an article's URL in order to paste into a Twitter app.
I'm done looking!

I have bought practically every Reader in the App Store trying to find the perfect one to suit my needs. For me Reeder is exactly what I have dreamed of for reading feeds on the iPhone. It is beautiful, simple and already at version one encompasses all of the things I require of an iPhone RSS reader. Love the sort by feed river and all! The color scheme and graphical layout are nice and easy on the eyes. Thanks so much for this app that I will use every day!

I own Byline and NetNewsWire. This blows them out of the water with speed and an awesome interface. It doesn't have a lot of features, but does what it does well and with polish.
I Love This App. But...

It really needs caching, in app email, and downloading of older posts.
I really want to like this app

As a "hard core" Reader user who has Byline and a few other Google Reader iPhone apps, I was immediately won over by the UI, which is just beautiful... I was also quickly taken by just how unintuitive this app is. The main screen breaks down to three sections, one of them being the Starred section, which for its section, has a "Starred" section at the top.... yet the other two categories which are not the "Starred" section also have a Statted category header. I find it really confusing and the meaningless UI icons (solid dot, open dot) don't do anything to help.
All in all, the app has a lot of potential, but seriously falls short in the usability department.
Great! But missing two critical items!
Still looking for a good RSS reader!

I love this app. It is simple and fun to use. BUT! To the developer: Please add in-app emailing of links to stories--I can't believe this was overlooked--and also please add the ability to view the Google proxy version of a story.
Add those two features and this will be a 5-star app for sure!
Beautiful

The interface is awesome. I particularly like the way it uses the status bar at the top for progress messages. Has replace NetNewsWire on my phone.
Missing 1 Key Feature, Great for Lefties

There is only 1 thing keeping this app from being better than Byline (the best Google Reader app in the store). This app needs caching. Image caching and starred item caching make browsing feeds infinitely better. Images loading while you are reading a headline is very distracting.
I also want to add that this app is great for lefties, much better than Byline.
