Before the iPhone came out, I ran with a watch that uses GPS satellite technology to keep tabs on my pace, distance and other measurements when I run. Like a lot of runners, I’ve gotten hooked on the ability to tally up how many miles I put in on the road and to use my watch to motivate myself to run a bit farther or faster. The Adidas miCoach These days ordinary smartphones have GPS built into them and developers are creating apps that use the technology for tracking runs. Plus some of the apps do a lot more than a GPS watch: They can help you devise a training schedule prior to races and more actively coach you during your runs. I spent a couple of weeks using three running apps for the iPhone—Running Method’s Run Coach Pro, FitnessKeeper’s RunKeeper Pro and Adidas’ miCoach—with the goal of seeing whether any Read More

Train Smarter with Runner’s World iPhone App
Mini_discussion_bubble Mashable - Posted Fri, 23 Jul 2010 01:38:34 UTC +00:00
by Runner’s World magazine today announced the release of its SmartCoach iPhone app, which creates customized training guides for race distances between a 5-K and a marathon. Users can input their most recent race time, weekly and long-term distance goals, training level (maintenance, moderate, hard or very hard), the day they’d like to schedule their long runs and the amount of time they’d like to train for (up to 16 weeks) to receive their customized plan. The app suggests a running distance and pace that varies each day, increasing in distance and speed and then tapering off shortly before race day. The plans are based upon the work of exercise physiologist Jack Daniels PhD, who co-published two equations that relate oxygen consumption to the speed and length of various running performances. These equations, the app’s Background section explains, have helped shape nearly every training program since developed for runners. The app Read More
10 Essential iPhone Apps for Runners

For people who enjoy running, there’s nothing like lacing up the Nikes, heading out the door and hitting that stride. But every runner hits a wall at one point or another and day after day, run after run can soon become monotonous. Sometimes a little jolt to the routine is welcomed. Whether you want to try out new routes, strive to be faster, have better endurance or even lose a little weight, runners (and want-to-be runners) can turn to the following 10 iPhone apps for a little more variety in their training regimens: RunKeeper Pro is probably the most well-known of the running apps on this list. This is a feature-rich app that enables GPS tracking, distance, speed monitoring, caloric output and activity history for any number of activities you partake in including sports such as running, cycling, hiking, skiing and swimming. You can also sync all the data to RunKeeper’s Read More

Reviews

Motivation
Natsmom86 4.0 stars Version: 1.4
A few flaws, but the only program I can use to get started training for a half marathon and see all the way through what my plan is. It's great motivation to see where I started. My gps doesn't always work so I have to manually enter but it's easy and simple to do.
Makes life so much easier!
Smartypants8229 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
With the training programs in this app, I don't have to worry about planning and tracking my own progress anymore. It's so much better than mapmyrun. It's also nice knowing it was designed by professional athletes. This is going to help me bring my running to the next level and hopefully lose that stubborn last 5 pounds, too! Love it.
This app has so much!
Foggy Delight 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
It's amazing how many different plans there are in this one app! What a great deal. My training is going well and I'm looking forward to other races soon.
Great training plan options
Little Runner Girl 5.0 stars Version: 1.3
Great app. Really helping me get ready for my next race, and excited about training for other races with this app!
I love the options!
SF trail runner 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I like this app for a couple of reasons. I'm starting out with a 10k training plan, but my goal is to run a marathon by the end of the year and I feel like this app is going to really help me with that goal. I like training for local running races and I like that I can set the training plan to perfectly peak on race day.
The jury is still out
HepCatWog 3.0 stars Version: 1.3
I have used this app since May. Based on the previous reviews I decided not to use the GPS, so I use the app for training and manually enter my information after each run. I have been happy with the training plans. It is different training on time versus miles but I have adapted. I wish there was more information about each type of run it recommends. There is just a brief explanation and I would appreciate examples and details. I don't feel my times have improved with this training plan like they have when using other programs. I'm 8 weeks away from my event and my times have not improved much in the past 12 weeks.
Good program
gibtown 4.0 stars Version: 1.3
I like this running program.
GPS not working
Action required 1.0 stars Version: 1.3
I downloaded running coach pro. However I cannot get the gps to work. I like the half training plan but right now I have to manually input everything. I have emailed tech support and hope to hear back. I am using an I4.
Good app with sone flaws
Abomb86 3.0 stars Version: 1.3
Love it but wish it would beep or buzz or notify you when your time is up or when you're doing Intervals where you run a few minutes faster then recover. Also if you pause your run to send a text you lose all your distance that's been tracked but the clock doesn't start over.
It helps
Jokotcha 3.0 stars Version: 1.3
A good aplication to help you structure your training schedule. Not very flexible if you need to adjust the training, or if you prefer planning with distance rather than time. Overall, a good tool that deserves improvement. I would purchase again.
Training plan works great
Floyd Foley 5.0 stars Version: 1.4
I'm training for my first ever road race and excited about the training plan. Every day a tip and a run.
Just in time
Tomas234 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I've been trying to get back into running so I downloaded this. Takes a minute to figure out, but once you do it's pretty sweet.

Cbarbarat 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
This is what i've been looking for forever. I love running different types of races and finally have a legit app to help me train. Thank you!!
Easy to use and fun
LM runner 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
The best part is how easy it is to track your runs- it takes just seconds!
Rip off
Crazyengineer 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Upset with this buy. Each training plan for 5k, 10k, half, and full marathon cost extra. Only thing you get is Get Fit which is not worth the upfront cost.
save your money
brando sterling 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
lame, save your money, gps tracking didn't work, you pay $1 for it only to find out you to pay $4 more for the 1/2 marathon tracking.
This is the real deal
xanyoung 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
Finally! There are some worthless running apps out there... This one is exceptional, extensively researched and very well designed. If you do one thing today (other than get off the couch) it should be to get this app! Seriously, it's amazing--you will be glad you did.
Wish I could get a refund
DutchSpeaker 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
There are no audio cues about when to switch paces or what each term means. I have no idea what a 10k page is like but it tells me to run one. I'm using the 5k plan. The program freezes randomly which throws off my tracking. The GPS is spotty but there's no way to edit the length of the run. I may not be a super runner but I didn't spend 40 minutes running half a mile. Also, if you start a run and accidently close the program, you can't resume it. Did anyone beta test this app?! Yes, I tried emailing tech support and I didn't get so much as a canned "Thanks for your feedback..."
Greatly disapointed
ipscGM 1.0 stars Version: 1.1
Just spent $9.99 on top of the app price, for the 50k plan. Before you download the plan it asks what level runner you are. Once this is submitted YOU CANNOT CHANGE IT!! Unless you want to download the plan again and be charged a second time. There are no guidance as to what level you shot enter and no warning that once it is entered you can't change it. I put intermediate. I run 5 days/week about 7 miles each run. This plan says I should run for 30 min 3 days a week! Weeks 1 and 2 are even easier. If this is the intermediate plan I wonder what the beginner level looks like. I email customer service about changing to the advanced level of the plan...no response from them. One of the most expensive app here and you can't change your level without buying the program again? WEAK!!!
Pretty good app
USMCtrumpet 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
COMPLETED my first training plan (get fit plan) - things went pretty well until the end when the runs got longer and my schedule got really busy. The ability to rearrange kept me mostly on track until I had too many rest days due to schedule and no way to rearrange anymore. Not much the app can really do for me there. This app got me running regularly for the first time in years...no need to think, just do what it tells me and off I go. I just set up a new 4 week 5K plan (thanks for making those free!) and look forward to seeing what I can do with this. The workouts are different, the pace runs have more variety in this plan vs. the fit plan. Original review with some edits: This app has some good points and some bad, but the bad can be easily corrected! First off, I like that it set up a training plan for me. I've kept with it the past two weeks which is a big plus! The bad thing is that when you set up a training plan it sets it up but never asks you if it's what you want. So I had to set up about 4 plans before I got it how I wanted it. The ability to move workouts around to put your rest days or workout days where you need them is a big plus also. EDIT - once you start a new program you can't see your old workouts, it says the data is still there but you just won't be able to see it. Would be nice to be able to! I don't use the GPS tracker - I use trailguru and will continue to use that because of the lap feature and that's where all my uploads are. The app lets you input your run time for the workouts you complete instead of using the built in GPS tracker - this is good. But it doesn't let you input your miles!!!! It also doesn't let you edit once you've completed a workout. EDIT - and once you've pushed track you can't undo and input the time manually. FIXED - Also, the engineer in me thinks that they forgot to multiply by 100 to get percent. I have an 8 week program and the first day completed I only have .02 percent complete? I don't think so...how about 2 percent! Also, it should be noted that the race specific training programs are in-app purchases, but the get fit program is customizable to different ability levels and numbers of workouts per week.
Doesnt Work
Vin Diesel es God 1.0 stars Version: 1.0
Bought this the other day...cant use it with my iPod Touch
Definite potential
jmneuhaus 3.0 stars Version: 1.1
This app has motivated & kept me accountable. If im being tracked while on a run and stop to pet someones dog, the tracker pauses until i get moving again. I love the play lost feature. Another runner wrote that it's not able to be edited... True! Not happy with that, but customer service said they were working on changing that. If it does get changed, it will be the perfect app.
Upgrades not flexible
lzrd1 2.0 stars Version: 1.1
I was ok with buying the half marathon upgrade, but it's lame that I can't modify it. I want to change my starting date and have to re-buy to change anything!
nice!!
ttaylor926 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
glad to finally see a running app that is supported by legit professional athletes.
