by Runner’s World magazine today announced the release of its SmartCoach iPhone app, which creates customized training guides for race distances between a 5-K and a marathon. Users can input their most recent race time, weekly and long-term distance goals, training level (maintenance, moderate, hard or very hard), the day they’d like to schedule their long runs and the amount of time they’d like to train for (up to 16 weeks) to receive their customized plan. The app suggests a running distance and pace that varies each day, increasing in distance and speed and then tapering off shortly before race day. The plans are based upon the work of exercise physiologist Jack Daniels PhD, who co-published two equations that relate oxygen consumption to the speed and length of various running performances. These equations, the app’s Background section explains, have helped shape nearly every training program since developed for runners. The app

Finally have smartcoach on my iPhone. It's great, worth the dollar.
Clearly a marketing app

Not good training plans.
Not good for race training schedule!!!

This app is not good for scheduling at all. It does not increase your milage or time whatsoever, just basically tells you to run everyother day. Pretty worthless. Althought it does have a race day countdown. I did not try and record my workouts because I had purchased it for the scheduling.
More Customizable Please

Would really like to designate which days I can run than just my long day. Also, A friend mistakenly changed settings in my plan for the start date and I'm already 4 weeks in; the app won't let me change my start date back to the date it was originally, so now my plan is off by a week, very frustrating.
Something's missing

I expected something more than what the website offered since I had to pay for this app. It would be a five star app if I could tie it into my training log on Runner's World.
Not flexible enough

Version: 1.0
This assumes you are starting training from scratch so for three weeks the workouts are too slow and then suddenly you're jumping up a mile per week. Not helpful unless you are the runner it is designed for.
Simple but very good

Smart Coach has long been on runnersworld.com, and it works well in this simple app.
Great app

It's about time RW came out with this and for only a buck. I love having my training plan at my fingertips. Simple to use, too! I'm using it to train for my 10th marathon and a BQ. How about more apps of your other tools, RW.
Great plans!

Very customizable plans for someone wanting to train for their next race. Easy to understand, and easy to follow (once you get past the whole running thing :-)
Finally a real runner app!

I would give it a 5 star but I think that it would be great if you can get a workout for a mile race. Keep the updates!
on par w/ other programs

it's a solid app that creates realistic programs. I use a run/walk method, so it'll take some add'l calculating for pace times.
it would be nice to be able to have multiple user profiles, but I guess the email/print function will do for now.
Only one problem :/

I love this app but I only wish that they could add s feature that let's you pick the days you can't run and work around them for your running plan, besides that it would be 5 stars
Great...., but?

Just installed the app and created a 16-week plan for completing a half marathon. I input my last mile time and my distance goal. The plan I received has me completing the race @ a 10:30 mile pace. What if I want my goal time to be lower? Would be great if the plan could take into account my race goal time, too.

I always use the program in the Runners World website but here is a plus. Good app, easy to use and very useful for runners.
RE: Specific Time Goals
dengaterade
Version: 1.0
SmartCoach uses your current fitness level to give you a realistic plan you can follow, and time you can hit in your goal race. Just like a real coach would. From the background & specifications screen, (More... menu item in the app):
"If you have a specific race distance and time goal, you can input numbers into SmartCoach that will give you a program designed to reach your specific goals. Note, however, that this is often not a good approach. You may very much want to run a certain time goal, but if you are not in shape to train hard enough to achieve that time, your program will be too difficult, and you are likely to become frustrated, injured and/or overtrained. In running and racing, it's always best to be realistic."
Pretty Sweet!

This is great, much easier than the website which I use all the time so very convenient to have iPhone access. It would be great if you could enter a goal finish time. It would also be cool if you could tack your progress. Any chance for a Training Log app?

I use this tool on the runners world website all the time. Totally worth the dollar to have on my iPod.
