by Runner’s World magazine today announced the release of its SmartCoach iPhone app, which creates customized training guides for race distances between a 5-K and a marathon. Users can input their most recent race time, weekly and long-term distance goals, training level (maintenance, moderate, hard or very hard), the day they’d like to schedule their long runs and the amount of time they’d like to train for (up to 16 weeks) to receive their customized plan. The app suggests a running distance and pace that varies each day, increasing in distance and speed and then tapering off shortly before race day. The plans are based upon the work of exercise physiologist Jack Daniels PhD, who co-published two equations that relate oxygen consumption to the speed and length of various running performances. These equations, the app’s Background section explains, have helped shape nearly every training program since developed for runners. The app

Wish u could edit the plan

This app came out after I started an online smartcoach training, but I can't use it because I can only select a start date of today or later. Shortening the plan just throws all my runs off. Past start dates would fix this, then I could use the app. Otherwise looks great, just wish I could use it!
It was great

Nice app, would like it to be a tad more challenging but have a 8 week lull between races coming up so will give their schedule a try. Guess I'll update with result in 8 weeks. (the pace it tells me to run at is 40/1:30 slower than I'm used to, hence the skepticism)
Great app but could be more flexible

I was using Smart Coach online when a friend told me that Runner's world had come out with an App. I was very excited until I realized that I can't set my Start date correctly because I started my plan a few weeks ago. I tried to shorten the length of the plan, but them my long runs are off. Its a great tool, online and app, I just wish it was a little more flexible.

I have been looking forward to the release of this app since I first heard about it. I have used Smart Couch to train for three marathons and just started my forth. No longer do I need to use the web Smart Coach then cut and paste each day's workout into my calendar. Now I can just setup my training plan on my iPhone and look at it whenever I need to. Works great, just like the web version.
Only (minor) complaint I have with both versions is the limited start date. If I'm several weeks into a training plan and it loses my settings I have to start over from scratch then adjust the dates accordingly. It seems like it would be an easy fix to allow any arbitrary start date...
