One accessory category that always seems to stir up reader interest is wireless webcams. We've seen our share of them over the last year: the Stem Innovations iZon (US$129.95), the iBaby Monitor ($199.95), and the WiFi Baby 3G ($279) among others. Lorex, a manufacturer of a number of security cameras, has joined the fray with the $299.99 LW2031 Live Connect Home Video Monitoring System. What makes this system so different from any other webcam I've reviewed recently is its integration with Skype. You actually set up a Skype account for the webcam, and then make a call to that account to view your webcam feed. Most other webcams either have a way to be viewed directly through an app or have a website that you can visit to see your feed. Using Skype as an intermediary is quite smart -- many people already use the app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and

If you’re planning to travel this weekend, Skype may have a nice gift for you. The popular VoIP service is offering free Wi-Fi access in select airports across the U.S. thru December 27th. More precisely, a free hour of Internet access will be available in more than 50 airports using Skype WiFi. To get started make sure you’ve downloaded the latest version of Skype for Windows or Skype for Mac, or have downloaded the Skype WiFi app on your iOS device. Once you’ve signed in with a valid Skype ID, check your wireless network connection to see if you are in a supported hotspot. It’s that simple. You can see the list of airports from this page at Skype’s website and learn more about Skype WiFi from here. Hopefully it will soon be available for other mobile devices, not just those made by Apple… Finally, Skype encourages its users to tweet

Posted 08/11/2011 at 1:21pm | by Nik Rawlinson and Susie Ochs Believe J.J. Cale, because he knows what he’s talking about: traveling light is the only way to fly. The next time you’re tempted to overpack, remember to take half as many clothes, twice as much money, and your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. An iOS device can replace paper maps, books, and travel guides; and the information you’ll find in apps and iBooks is more timely and relevant anyway. Obviously you won’t need CDs or a portable DVD player -- or pricey hotel or in-flight pay-per-view -- to stay entertained. And by posting photos or blog updates about your vacation online, you won’t even have to send postcards. To prepare you and your electronic travel buddy to hit the road, we found the best apps, gear, and know-how to keep you connected. Travel can be tough on your iPad or

A smartphone is a powerful tool you should use on every trip, if nothing to save some cash along the way. In addition to the must-have navigation apps and local guides from the likes of Lonely Planet, there are other applications that could help you save money while travelling. Here are the apps we suggest you to try out on your next trip: Groupon You’ve probably heard about Groupon and may have also used it. The daily deals service is getting more and more users every day, despite facing a tough competition from the likes of Facebook and Google, with Nokia and Microsoft planning to join the race, too. Their mobile application is available for multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and they also have a mobile website for users of other mobile devices. To take advantage of Groupon, simply sign-up for the local version of the service (your travel destination)

A smartphone is a great companion for every trip. There are a number of apps that can make your travel easier, whether it’s about finding a place to stay, monuments and historical sights to see, or learning more about the city/place you’re visiting… there’s (usually) an app for that. Here are some apps I’ve found useful in my travels. Please note that I’m linking to iOS apps and that not all of them are available on other platforms. The point is to get the idea which apps to use for what purpose, to better plan and ultimately enjoy your trip. Let’s start with the flight search… Flight search Pretty much every major airline now has its iPhone app. Moreover, some companies support Android and BlackBerry whereas some others are experimenting with newer platforms like Windows Phone 7.

All of the new Verizon iPhone 4 owners who are looking for apps to install on their shiny new devices can add Skype to the list. The free Skype app has been updated today so that it functions properly on the Verizon iPhone, and the update also adds support for the H.264 codec. This support is crucial to allowing Skype users to call from their iOS devices to more Skype-enabled devices, including new TVs from Panasonic and Samsung. Of course, now that you're on the "Can You Hear Me Now?™" network, you shouldn't need to resort to Skype for your calls, should you? [via BGR]

Skype has once again updated its iPhone app to allow users to video-call their buddies on Skype-compatible TVs. Unfortunately that includes only a limited number of TV sets, namely select (and pricey) models made by LG, Panasonic and Samsung. Of course, there’s also an option to buy a camera and connect it to some Internet-capable TVs to keep up with your on-the-go iFriends. The new feature is made possible thanks to the use of H.264 codec which works across platforms. In the other news, Skype acknowledged their app will work on Verizon’s just as well it did with AT&T’s version… Dusan has been using smartphones since their introduction and is now following the latest trends in the industry. The "convergence" is what he's most excited about, and writing about it is the next logical thing to do. He thinks that using a smartphone is what everyone who cares about their time

Users of the Skype iPhone app can now install an update which enables video calling to Skype contacts on more devices, including Skype-enabled TVs. While there still aren't a ton of sets which support the popular voice and video chat app, Skype really only began sidling its way into the living room last year -- so expect more models to appear in 2011. Here's hoping that Skype hurries up and updates its Android app with video call support as well. With Qik in tow, it shouldn't be too much longer before the company invites non-iPhone users to the party. If the thought of Skype on your TV has the gears turning, head on over to their website to see available models from Panasonic and Samsung -- you can even buy one directly from Skype, along with the required webcams.

By Georgia, Wednesday, Jan 26, 2011 | If you could only have 5 apps on your iPhone what would they be and why? We’re talking App Store apps here, not built-in apps like Safari. For example, if I were stranded on a desert island (that just happened to have Wi-Fi and electricity to charge — you know, thanks to Dharma) these would be my must-have apps: What apps would you simply not want to live without?

As long as they’re iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they’re fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break! Alli: Skype recently updated its iOS app to include the ability to video chat over 3G. While video over 3G is mediocre, video over WiFi is great. I’ve found that lately I’m using Skype on my iPhone more often than Skype on my desktop. Skype was even able to come to my rescue recently, when I had no voice or data with AT&T at the Cincinnati airport. Once the plane was at cruising altitude and

Posted 01/03/2011 at 2:17pm | by Cory Bohon The thing we've long-loved about Skype is the ability to conduct a video chat with relative ease, but it wasn't until just last week that you could video chat right from your iOS devices. That's why we wanted to take a minute to show you how to utilize Skype's new video calling features. Video calling has to be one of the greatest advantages of using Skype. The service provides great video quality, and in the case of the iPhone, you can also accept and send video call requests when you're on both Wi-Fi and 3G. This is something FaceTime has yet to do. >> iPhone or iPod touch with video capabilities >> Skype Account >> Skype 3.0 from the iTunes App Store (You can update if you have an older version) To place a video call to someone using Skype, you must first

By Chris Hall on December 31st, 2010 Skype does video chat over 3G. I was up fairly late last night watching an old episode of Law and Order SVU when one of those Apple spoof commercials from T-Mobile came on. In it, the too-cool-for-himself guy with the excessively yellow-orange hair, the Apple guy, was talking to his family via Facetime when he walked out of his Wi-Fi bubble. As you’d expect, he garbles and gadooks into what is assumed is a “lost connection” image while the half pretty, half odd looking Anne Hathaway knockoff explains that the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G can do video chats from anywhere with its mythical 4G network speed. Skype then (covertly) launched their 3.0 update which allows for video chats over 3G. I was saying “a-ha!” when Mariska Hargitay was busting some young punk for kidnapping a girl after a party. I’m pretty sure she died, Ice

We knew it was going to happen, but we didn’t know it’d be this soon. Today Skype released Skype 3.0, which adds support for video chat on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation. You can grab Skype 3.0 download here. iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation users can now video chat on Skype over their 3G connections, although using WiFi is recommended for better quality. iPad users and iPod touch 3rd generation users can receive and view video chat requests from iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4th generation users, however they cannot show their own videos because they don’t have a camera. Skype Video chat is free, but additional data charges may apply depending on the plan you’re using. Thankfully I signed up with AT&T early and am on the unlimited data plan, so I don’t need to worry about that. There is

Now that Skype has added support for two-way video calling on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and fourth-generation iPod touch over 3G cellular networks, Apple's FaceTime just doesn't seem as cool. The competition just got tougher with since you can finally video chat from anywhere without being limited by Wi-Fi. Plus, when you create a video as slick as Skype has pimping their two-way iPhone video calling, the social advantage definitely goes to the wildly popular Skype-meisters. Brilliantly done!

A Bit of History on Skype's Video Chat for iPhone Over the weekend we caught wind of a little mistake made somewhere within Skype offices. Instructions had been posted for accessing video chat over Skype on an iPhone. CES, which happens in early January, seemed like the best bet for any kind of official announcement, but it seems that the folks behind Skype had other plans. Hitting Sooner Than We'd Expected Today, they've rolled out the latest update to their popular iPhone App, and it adds the much-wanted video calling. Not long after the accidental reveal on the website, we started seeing teaser videos pop up. Each with video taken at a location where it was made obvious that the person on the call was using some sort of handheld mobile device. It's Time for FaceTime to Step it Up Once again, Skype isn't held back by the limitations enforced

Skype app version 3.0 brings the highly-anticipated mobile video calling to iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPod Touch 4G. Skype mobile video calling is set to compete against Apple’s Facetime video chat. However, Skype has a bit advantage because users will be able to use both Wi-Fi and AT&T Inc.'s 3G cellular network. Apple’s Facetime is restricted to just WiFi only. Skype users who make video calls using 3G will get a bit data costs. Some of notable key features of Skype version 3.0 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch include: • Make Skype to Skype video calls on WiFi and 3G* • Call Skype desktop users (Mac OS X or Windows) and other iPhone users. • Two-way video calls supported on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4th gen. • Receive only video supported on iPad and iPod touch 3rd gen, with no camera. • Make video calls in

If you had little interest in video-calling before Apple’s own FaceTime service was introduced with the iPhone 4, we’d be surprised to hear it changed your mind. Good software and decent enough quality couldn’t hide the fact it was seriously limited, thanks to Wi-Fi only connections to other iPhone 4’s or Macs. Now, after a surprisingly long wait, Skype have introduced their own video calling option inside version 3 of their iPhone app. As well as being usable over Wi-Fi, you can make video calls over 3G too; and not just to iPhone 4s but to desktop computers, no matter what OS they’re running. You’ll need to have an iPhone 4, 3GS or the latest 4th generation iPod Touch for two-way video fun, which works in portrait or landscape orientation. Now, although the introduction of video-calling in Skype isn’t going to change many people’s opinion of the service, it will bring

In a move that's sure to make users stand up and say "Hallelujah," the latest update to the Skype app for iPhone finally adds video calling. The newest version of the app will allow users to make video Skype to Skype calls from their iPhone via Wi-Fi and 3G, and also call Skype desktop users on both OS X and Windows (and we presume their sorely neglected Linux users), as well as those using Skype on their iPhones and iPads. Naturally, if you're on an iPad, you won't get to send video back -- and you have to deal with the iPhone interface since there isn't a native Skype app for the iPad. But, iPad 2 could change that. If the new hardware is released with a camera, Skype will be ready for it, and hopefully with an iPad-optimized app as well. So, have fun with video chatting via Skype and

When a single open job listing can yield hundreds of candidates, being able to manage the recruiting process becomes key. Neither companies nor candidates want to be burdened with a bunch of administration. Instead of creating new processes or downloading a bunch of new apps, here are some iPhone apps you might already have that can help you manage the recruiting process. Let us know in the comments below which mobile apps you use to streamline your company’s recruiting process. You’re at a networking event and meet someone who might be a good

Notifications have also been improved and made a little more cleaner, too. But fixes include events during voicemail playback, multiple Skype searches, chat keypad while receiving a call, voicemails being routed to speaker during chat and mor reliable support for iOS 4 devices without multitasking. When Apple's iPad launched in April, it was marketed primarily as a consumer device for reading, playing games and viewing media. But as the tablet computer's popularity has grown, so too has its usefulness in other arenas, including business. One of the many business needs met by the 900-app strong "Business" category in the App Store is the ability to attend online meetings. The device is particularly well-suited to attending meetings on the go, with its large screen for viewing the presentation and microphone and speakers for VoIP-based discussions. The popular Web conferencing app GoToMeeting jumped onto the iPad bandwagon early, producing an app that is easy and even sort of fun to use. Simply enter the meeting ID number and your name to join the meeting. From there, you can view the presenter's screen, hear others speaking and respond via the device's microphone or via a headset. Posted 07/22/2010 at 4:50am | by J.R. Bookwalter There was a collective sigh of relief when a new version of Skype showed up in the App Store on Wednesday, adding iOS 4 multitasking and the ability to run the app in the background, allowing you to receive calls or chats anytime. There’s just one problem: It doesn’t work if your device is jailbroken. Skype updated their iPhone app to version 2.0.1 on Wednesday (despite the app itself claiming the version number is 2.1), adding the long-awaited ability to multitask with iOS 4 that was first shown off when Apple announced the new version to developers. That means that finally, Skype can run quietly in the background, yet be able to receive calls or IM messages, as well as the ability to open other apps during those calls or chats. However, one group of users has discovered that the promised multitasking simply

It works both over WiFi and 3g, with no added charge. From the changelog: - Run Skype in the background with multitasking in iOS4. Receive Skype calls and IM while other apps are running or when your iPhone is locked. You can also continue your call while you switch to another application. Multitasking is available only with iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS. Video calling isn’t yet supported, but hopefully will be included in an update.

Good news, Skype users with iPhones, Skype has updated its free iPhone app to support the iOS 4 multitasking feature that allows the app to run in the background. In doing so, the refreshed app basically allows heavy Skype users to avoid using their wireless voice minutes on an or with iOS 4 installed. Rather than make or take voice calls over the cellular network, users can now keep the app running in the background and use their 3G data service to handle all outgoing and incoming internet calls. Not too long ago, Skype updated their iPhone app to work over 3G data networks. Until that update, the app only worked over WiFi connections. We’ll avoid getting into the AT&T-said-Apple-said speculation about why it took the VoIP service so long to allow the iPhone to use the service over 3G. What’s important here is that the ability to make Skype calls

Skype (Free) now supports fast app switching and (supposedly) background VoIP, but I still hate it forever. You see, despite Skype’s reputation for connecting people over long distances, it’s done a pretty horrific job at connecting me with family members in the same household. There have been numerous times when Skype has told me I have no friends online, even when I was sitting beside a friend and they were very clearly logged in. I’ve had these kinds of problems for years (this post is just a little biased…) and this newest version of the app feels like no exception. I made sure I had a freshly booted iPhone 3GS with 150+ MB of free RAM before loading Skype 2.1 up for the first time. I tried to message a friend, but got confused when the keyboard started jutting into the chat space. I then asked my friend to call me

by Skype for iPhone has been upgraded to include support for the multitasking capabilities of iOS4. The update means that users can now accept Skype calls and instant messages while running other applications, as well as switch to other tasks while using Skype. The Skype for iPhone [iTunes link] experience is now essentially on par with — if not better than — the native calling experience on the iPhone. The application was previously enhanced to support calls over 3G. Now calls made over 3G or Wi-Fi will no longer be restricted to users who have the Skype application running in the foreground. As with all iOS4-compatible apps, users will need to run Skype in the background to take advantage of multitasking and allow for incoming calls. It looks like iPhone users are very interested in making VoIP calls over 3G networks, as Skype said its 2.0 version of the iPhone app has been well received. “We’ve had millions of downloads to date,” Russ Shaw, Skype’s general manager for mobile, told Reuters. “That’s really positive.” The latest version enables iPhone users to use AT&T’s mobile data network to make free Skype-to-Skype calls, while the previous version only allowed the VoIP calling over WiFi networks. One of the reasons AT&T users are eager to get this product now is that Skype said it will start charging users a monthly fee, starting in August, to make VoIP calls over cellular data networks. Shaw didn’t dive into specifics about how much the fee will be but he did say the company doesn’t want to “price ourselves out of the market,” particularly because consumers currently use it for free. The calling service

Skype, a leading provider of inexpensive phone calls over the Internet, has finally completed a long-awaited move to make its service available over AT&T’s 3G network. Before, you could only make Skype calls from an iPhone when it was connected to the Internet through Wi-Fi. Now people can make low-cost Skype calls any time their phone has a connection, whether it is to AT&T’s 3G network or through Wi-Fi. AT&T had announced that it would allow phone calls over the Internet, known as voice over Internet protocol, or VoIP, phoning as far back as October of 2009. But Apple first had to make some changes in terms of service to allow that to happen. Those changes came last February. An app called iCall went live almost immediately, becoming the first app for Internet calls out of the gate. But Skype remained the 800 pound gorilla of low cost VoIP services, saying

However, despite making 3G VOIP calls a reality, it’s not all good news: the feature will soon become a premium option. Skype has detailed that starting late August 2010 the company will introduce a small fee that users will be required to pay on a monthly basis in order to use the Skype-to-Skype 3G call making feature. From now until the unspecified August date users can try the new feature free-of-charge. Our early tests have proven the service works well with voice quality being surprisingly crisp and clear. The Skype app for iPhone [App Store] has been updated to allow voice calls to be made over 3G data networks. Skype is a popular VOIP (voice over IP) application that allows users to make phone calls from their computer or mobile phone over a network connection. This avoids using up any allotment of "voice minutes" from cell phone providers. Instead, the calls are routed over the data network which are traditionally offered in an unlimited monthly block. In the past, AT&T has restricted these applications to Wi-Fi networks only to avoid piggybacking on their 3G service. AT&T, however, changed their position on this back in January but it has taken this long for Skype to release an update that supports this feature. Skype indicates that this feature is free until at least the end of August, but at that time a small monthly fee will be initiated. It's not clear

Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply).” The app may still be handy for iPod Touch users, but I don’t see why iPhone users will pay Skype to make calls if they’re already paying their phone provider. by There’s good news and bad news. The good: Skype 2.0 for iPhone [iTunes link] lets you make calls over 3G. The bad: After August, you’ll need to pay for the feature. That’s right: The most yearned-for feature of Skype for iPhone, making calls over 3G, is finally here. The new app just landed in the app store, and by all accounts the 3G calls hold up fairly well. Here’s the catch: After August 2010, Skype will start charging a “small monthly fee” for use of the 3G calling feature. You heard that right — even though you’re already paying AT&T (in the U.S., at least) for your data plan, Skype is throwing in an extra fee. At this point we’re not sure if the move is Skype’s own doing, or if the network operators had a hand in trying to make the Skype app a less desirable option.

With that challenge in mind, we (mostly) stuck our trusty iPhone 3GS away for a full day and “made do” with only the Wi-Fi model of iPad. As it turns out, it’s not as difficult as you might expect. We requested Stanza remove the USB functionality in their app as it was a simple case of the developer using private APIs in violation of the developer agreement.

In all of the hullabaloo over it the iPad, a long-awaited change to the iPhone got lost in the shuffle: Apple has taken the wraps off VoIP calls over the 3G network. That could mean a potentially huge savings on domestic and foreign calls. The reason is VoIP calls use data minutes rather than voice minutes. That means that you could buy a plan with minimal number of minutes — fewer than you actually use — as long as you have an unlimited data plan. Then you could make as many calls as you want over data. The first VoIP product up and running on the iPhone is iCall, a free app that gives you three ways to pay for calls. You can sign up for free calls to the United States and Canada that require you to listen to an ad before your call is made. Calls are limited to

It's been a long time coming, but the last hurdle is gone -- Apple has lifted the restrictions against 3G VoiP calls from the iPhone Software Development Kit. The implications of this are pretty huge. Not only does this mean that VoIP apps like Skype [iTunes Link] can now be easily updated to allow VoIP access over 3G on the iPhone, it also means that the 3G-enabled versions of the new iPad should be able to take full advantage of VoIP over 3G as well. The iPad does come with a microphone and a speaker, so while you won't be able to hold the device up to your ear like a phone (although it would be pretty funny to watch you try), calls over Skype or another VoIP program should theoretically be just as clear on the iPad as they are on the iPhone's tiny speaker. This has the potential to

Skype for the iPhone [iTunes link] has been updated to version 1.3. The software gains a landscape mode for instant messaging, the ability to give hints and tips to new users and a call quality monitor. However, the app still lacks many major features that users want -- including push notification, Bluetooth support and the ability to call out over the AT&T 3G network. Despite the claim of improved performance and the fix of a call drop issue when returning to a held call, reviewers on the App Store are also noting frequent crashes with this version of the software.

By Rene Ritchie, Tuesday, Jan 5, 2010 | UPDATE: Skype got back to us all official PR like: We’ve identified the fault which has made Skype for iPhone unavailable to some people. A fix is underway, and we expect that the app will be fully available in the next few hours. ORIGINAL: If you click on an iTunes link to get the Skype for iPhone App, as of this writing, iTunes pops up a notification saying Skype for iPhone is not currently available in the US App Store, or other international App Stores. If you search for Skype, the Skype app doesn’t show up. Skype’s official iPhone app page, still tells you to “Get it now”, but it’s currently not get-able. Temporary glitch? Sign that maybe, finally it’s being replaced with the 3G version AT&T, Apple and Skype said back in October ’09 would be coming our way? Or just gone

No sooner had I posted this article and read the initial comments than I suddenly was overwhelmed with an urge to let it ra1n and jailbreak again. I had been concerned over the very minor chance of something going wrong and winding up with a bricked iPhone, but I figured, what ‘s the worst that can happen? I have an iPod Touch here in Iraq (or is it iRaq?) with me, so the most I would lose capability-wise if everything went straight to hell would be the ability to get incoming text messages, and that could be rectified easily, if inconveniently, while the iPhone was sent home for repair. So, I took a deep breath, and Wow. Just Wow. Every time I jailbreak, I can ‘t help but feel like Dorothy in the (colorized) Wizard of Oz when she walks out of her house and everything goes from black and white

AT&T announced today that they're clearing the way for Apple to enable VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) applications like and to run on AT&T's 3G wireless network. The cellular carrier rocketed out an official press release addressing VoIP for iPhone on Tuesday afternoon, just shortly after rumors heralded that the announcement was forthcoming ahead of the wireless industry's CTIA conference due to start on Wednesday. "AT&T today announced it has taken the steps necessary so that Apple can enable VoIP applications on iPhone to run on AT&T's wireless network. Previously, VoIP applications on iPhone were enabled for Wi-Fi connectivity. AT&T this afternoon informed Apple Inc. and the FCC of its decision." It's somewhat obvious that all this hoopla is the result of the FCC's renewed push for net neutrality, opening the floodgate for a world of interesting new VoIP applications for iPhone users beyond Skype. This recent shot across the

I admit, I was one of those to pile on ol' Ma Bell as the culprit for keeping the Google Voice app (don't I wish that was a real iTunes link) off the App Store. Restrictions on Skype and the SlingPlayer app on the iPhone had conditioned me to believe that the "game changing" iPhone had, well, a completely different set of rules applied to it by AT&T. While many in the tech community continued to jump atop the dog pile, in which AT&T was at the very bottom, Apple ran the ball back the other way without anybody noticing. Apple's response to the FCC's questions covers several areas -- including the fact that it acted alone without AT&T's consultation -- in rejecting not yet allowing the Google Voice app. Almost as striking as Apple's admitted culpability, however, is its rationale for it, which smacks of odd logic and damages the

According to USA Today, Apple, AT&T, and Google are all expected to file their comments to the FCC regarding the rejection of the official Google Voice iPhone app, but that news has taken a back burner to some other news regarding Google and the FCC. Google is now under the FCC’s microscope as well thanks to their questionable app approval process. As part of its Google Voice probe, the FCC has asked Google to describe its process for “considering and approving” Android apps. The agency also asked the Web giant to specify the percentage of apps that are rejected and explain why. The USA Today report specifically mentions that Google Android users are only allowed to use a crippled version of Skype, which was designed specifically for Google’s platform. Android users get Skype Lite, a watered-down version of the original that routes calls over traditional phone networks — not the Internet. As

When push notification finally made its way to the iPhone, a lot of people were anticipating IMs pushed to their iPhone. At first, I scoffed at this idea. Skype (iTunes link) has been updated to 1.1, which brings it some new features making it more closely resemble its desktop sibling. So, what's new? Well, there's now support for Skype voicemail (subscription needed) and SMS text messaging. However, SMS texting is not bidirectional. Which means that you can send SMS texts, but not receive them. And while a dialog box states that sent SMS texts will show up as sent from the sender's Skype screen name, in my case it displayed the "999-99" caller ID that typically accompanies calls from a Skype-based client. Perhaps that's because I don't have a SkypeIn number? The 1.1 update also provides additional language support as well as more help when dialing phones.

Citing an exclusive source from within AT&T, appmodo reports that "tethering support is coming later this summer" is AT&T-speak for "tethering support is coming at the end of July." It won't be coming cheaply, however; appmodo's source says a tethering option will cost AT&T customers a whopping $55 a month. While this is cheaper than the $70 rumor that's been making the rounds, it still strikes me as ridiculous that AT&T is charging additional money for this option in the first place. Considering their "unlimited" data plan is reportedly only unlimited until you reach 5 GB or so in any given month, it seems preposterous for AT&T to charge their customers an extra fee to use the iPhone to access the internet via tethering. But, since AT&T's wrangling caused Skype to be restricted to WiFi only and SlingPlayer Mobile to be almost totally crippled compared to the same software on different

Apple’s iPhone has changed the game since its debut almost two years ago — building a powerful platform for on-the-go Web browsing and applications, in addition to making cellphone calls. Just a few months after the iPhone appeared, Apple (AAPL) introduced the very similar iPod Touch, which didn’t get as much attention, perhaps because its name understates the scope of its features. The Touch resembles the iPhone, only thinner, with the same multitouch screen, fast Web browser, iPod media player and ability to run almost all of the 35,000 apps in Apple’s App Store. It doesn’t have a camera, or a few other iPhone features, and it can’t connect to cellphone networks, relying instead on Wi-Fi for its Internet connection. The Touch has caught on: Apple recently indicated that it has sold 16 million of them. One reason for the popularity is that its freedom from a phone company eliminates pricey

Push notification for IM
JoshWood
Version: 1.2.2
This is the best app out there. However, what I really want to use Skype for is IM. Skype needs two things to make this work effectively:
1. Push notification for Skype chats
2. Allow users to stay continuously logged into Skype, without a timeout feature (or at least 24 hours)
When is the next update?
Thanks

Now that AT&T has announced support for VOIP over their 3G network for applications such as Skype, when can we expect an update not restricting calls when wifi is disabled? Also push notifications is needed now, very badly!
If you love Skype, you're gonna love (most of) this app.

The app overall is great. The user interface, layout, and options are just what you'd expect on the desktop version. There are a couple of things that are quite needed:
FIX THE PROBLEM!!!!!

Version: 1.2.2
I like the app for the most part. it does the main job of calling but there are some things which i hate! EVERY SINGLE time im in a call and if i get another call( thru my normal carrier), get a text message (from regualar carrier), receive an alert from my calendar schedule, low battery notification,...etc,,, skype HANGS UP! this is very annoying esp if you get any of these mentioned above on a constant basis wether for work or pleasure. so skype,,,,fix this problem. THIS PROBLEM was not there in the very first version. at least, in the first version when i was on a skype call and would get any of these notifications or a regular call, the application would put the skype call on HOLD. which i thought was great but now this is annoying as hell. i have recall the person im talking to and keep apologizing! so until this annoying problem is fixed, i give it only 2 stars
Good idea but far from great

Awesome app as long as the app is running but hate the fact that if you are using another app skype is useless. If I am paying a monthly service I think I should be notified of missed calls or messages at all times. 5 stars if the app could be on all the time. Anyone agree?
What is the point?!?

Version: 1.1
No Push Notification is, without question, inexcusable. Even more disgraceful however is the fact that there still isn't even the most basic fundamental of a sound/vibrate notification when the app is running and a message comes in. I use Skype primarily for IMing purposes and without this, the app is completely worthless (deleted it since this 1.1 "update"). I actually had to resort to using IM+ since they now support Skype WITH sounds/vibrations AND push notification. I paid them $10 for this... money I'd gladly have thrown Skype's way had they proven to be worthy in any way, shape or form. Here's hoping SOMEONE with basic programming sense actually reads these comments and fills a few of these gaping holes in future versions of this app.

After waiting patiently for a 3.0 update with push notifications I was extremely excited to see the update available today. To my dismay, push wasn't there. At least it doesn't crash on startup anymore, so that one star is earned and not a "should have been a zero star" rating. Get push notifications to work and not only will I up my rating but I'll pay for the service.

Version: 1.0.3
Kind of sluggish on both os 2 and 3. Of course 3 is in beta. Very useful for both iPhone and iPod but more so for the iPod. iPhone users need to understand skype is not a cell phone replacement and was never meant to be! But this does offer you chat and access to calls without using up your minutes... assuming you purchase a skype phone number. I use skype for my home phone that I can take with me wherever I go for less than $6 a month.
Note: Understand what Skype IS before commenting!!! Crashes can also be subject to other apps you may have installed... skype has not crashed at all on both of my devices. :)
Really good!

I really like the app - I've been waiting for this for a long time.
Also, make it possible to edit the number when you pull it in from iphone contacts.
Also, if you're on a Skype call and the iPhone phone rings, you get kicked out of Skype and the call is lost. That can't happen. I'm downgrading to 3 stars for that reason.
CRASHING...

Skype App

Version: 1.0.1
Easy to install and set up. Had to purchase Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic at my local Apple Store to enable me to use the app. Called my daughter on the east coast who uses Skype on her PC. Audio quality is as good or better then my Time Warner Digital Phone service. Added the Skype application to my PC so we can use either device. We live in the midwest, have relatives on both the east and west coasts. This will be fun to use.
Finally!

Always wanted to use Skype but it's a drag to have to sit at a computer so I never downloaded it before. Now it's easy even for a tech-deficient gal like me. No crashes, decent quality and easy to use. What's not to like?
Crash at the log-in screen already

This needs a major fix on crashing. Cannot even log-in for once, keep crashing instead of loading the keyboard.
Really...just wow.

This app is very slick and easy to use. I haven't tried out the calling yet, because I'm in science class on 3G but it seems pretty cool. Can't wait to get home

About time, I live on an island off FL and have little or no ATT service at home, but i do have wifi and now can use my iphone at home! Kudos to Apple 4 making this happen. Now when I travel the world I have a true world phone. This would be a great time 4 Apple to unlock video source so we can have a true Jetsons' phone we always wanted. This will be the #1 free app for a long time. THXS Skype & Apple. The iphone has made me an apple believer.
New Skype app having problems on Jailbroken phones?

Version: 1.0.1
Update: Saurik has released a new mobile substrate and the issue is fixed. No need for intelliscreen or any other hacks. Just update mobile substrate from cydia. Update to v0.9.2803-1 (or newer) of mobile substrate.
Worth the wait

It's been a long wait, but this app lives up to my expectations. The user interface is sleek and user-friendly. The contacts list is intuitive and well-integrated with the iPhone (you can call any of your iPhone contacts from within the app). Chats work well. Call quality is as good as you'll get with your desktop Skype application, depending on your WiFi connection.
On my iPod Touch it works perfectly! A dream come true!

I have everything skype- In, Out, Voicemail, Caller ID, etc... always dreamt of having it on my iPod, now i do. Got it an hour ago- loaded right in. No crashes, logged right in to my skype account, test calls to my cell phone and back worked as it should. NOTE- I'm using an iPhone headset with a mic (tried others not Apple and the mic didn't work). So either buy the "Apple headset with mic" or permanently borrow the headphones from your friend with and iPhone who never uses it... THANK YOU, Skype and Apple! (my two favorite companies!)

Is it me or is it so hard to write a stable and working App for the iPhone. I'm so tired of these App's not working.

I was so worried that iSkype was going to crash on me after just a couple of minutes of being in a call, like a lot of the reviews are saying, so I didn't get my hopes up and I decided to run a test call to another Skype account from my iPod Touch to my computer. I just let it sit there while I did other stuff and right now the call has been going on for 1 hour & 20 minutes and my iPod battery's about to die, so I'd say it's a blazing success. It makes me think the crashing happens more on iPhones than iPod Touches, maybe?
works and looks great!!

it's called 'voice over INTERNET protocol', not 'voice over 3G'! VOICE OVER 3G IS CALLED A CELLULAR PROVIDER. of course you have to be on a WIFI network or else skype would be a cellular carrier in direct competition with AT&T and all the other providers. Why would ATT ever let skype use their network to provide $3 unlimited voice to their customers????? PLEASE go find some common sense. it's free. how on earth do you complain that a free app that is strictly voip doesn't work over EVDO? think before you review.
Great start--want more!

So many jailbraked iPhones without Cydia updates. No wonder that your Skype crashes. Update the Cydia apps and the prob is gone.

This definitely needed more testing. While mine isn't crashing, as many others have reported, calls get dropped after about a minute or two. In addition, if you navigate to any other section of the app, such as My Info, or even turn off the screen on the iPhone, it automatically puts the call on hold until you get back to the Live Call. Definitely needs to be fixed. I'd really love to have my screen off to save battery life and not accidently touch any portions of the screen. Has the potential to be an excellent app for the iPhone once these issues are ironed out.
