The Internet has been good to surfers and other water-sports enthusiasts, who can check a webcam or online surf report before taking a futile trip to the beach. Smartphones beat a desktop browser, however, because they put the Web in your hands when you have a few hours of free time, a long board on the roof rack and you want to check for waves. And, at least for surfers, the iPhone trumps other smartphones. Take the Surf Watch app ($10), for example. The software isn’t available anywhere on the wider Web, and sadly for BlackBerry and Android users, it’s not available on their mobile platforms. Before explaining, a little warning: for people who have no idea how coastal buoy data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration relates to a favorite surf spot, this app will mean a slight learning curve. But if, like many avid surfers, you know which

A couple weeks ago I wrote about the top 40 iPhone apps of 2009 in the App Store. This article got quite a bit of success (especially on Twitter) and a few of you asked me what where my favorite iPhone apps of 2009. I’ve had many apps come and go this year so I guess the best way to tell what my favorites are is to tell you the one I will keep with me for next year. Facebook – Need I say more? Indispensable if you have a Facebook account (note: you may want to join our Facebook page). Flight Control – My favorite iPhone game. Ever! It’s fun and addicting. My best score is 357 planes landed. Can you do better? Bejeweled 2 – My fiancée turned me on this game. I used to play it a lot but I got over it. Tap Tap Revenge 3 –

Finally, a great app to check out the surf conditions from my iPod or iPhone! I really love that Oakley I'd on the ball with this kinds stuff! Ahead of the curve in many ways, I am a customer of their sunglasses sine about 1987-88ish. Thank you SO much Oakley (everyone involved, artists, devs, code people, surfline, etc.) for making an app just like this. I would also love to see some features added as mentioned by some others, but REFUSE to lower my rating, as this is a cutting edge entry for all surf and ocean loving people!
GREAT JOB OAKLEY AND SURFLINE!
Great app with almost everything a surfer needs!

Cannot tell you how helpful this app is! Beats checking surfline or my other favorite surf reporting sites from my iphone. A couple of things are missing that would make it a 5 star; High/Low tide info and Video Streams.
Perfect!

Great app. This is what I have been looking for. Functional and cool. No matter how sweet the app is, there is still no surf in Santa Barbara. Can the developers please fix this bug.

Great app... but I'm posting this in the hope the developers will read these and see yet another request for tide info. That'll make this pretty near flawless.
awesome app

Best app available

Version: 1.0.1
I've only had my iPhone the last few months, but this has undoubtedly become the most useful app I have. I've read other reviews which state that it doesn't have tide info, but every break I've checked it for has had comprehensive tide info, and I live in OC and surf LA and SD a lot. So perhaps, those reviews were written concerning an earlier version or the people writing them have trouble scrolling down? Don't know, but anyway, thanks to Surfline and Oakley for what I feel is the best app available, free or otherwise. If you surf and own an iPhone, then this is a must have.
Really useful

This is a super useful app. The favorites page makes it easy to check my local & daydream breaks in one shot. It would be nice to access longer range forecasting, maybe for a pay version.
Awesome

I have Surf Report configured to show me the current beach conditions at our annual vacation spot. I look at it and smile each time I think about going to the beach. It would be nice to have station cams.

This one and facebook are the best apps in exsistance! I've been waiting and hoping surfline would produce something like this. Now I don't even need safari on my phone because checking the surf report was the only thing I ever seemed to use it for. So so great! Thank you surfline and thank you Oakley!
2 Day forecast is nonsense
The App Review Squad
Version: 1.1
This app has lost it's appeal. It only shows current conditions, and the 2 day forecast is for yesterday and today. What use is that? You still have to go to surfline.com using Safari to see the forecast for tommorrow and the next day. Get this fixed and we're back to 4 stars.
Meh.. Could be better

Surfline mobile has better info and less bling to get in the way. Oakleys version might be useful if you are traveling and know nothing about the local breaks. . This app feels more like a marketing vehicle to me (which is fine of you want surf photos etc.)
I'd love to see a version of this that uses the iPhone strengths to tell the report/ forecast story in an engaging and complete way.
Hey, it's free. Can't compain too much ( probably deserves a 3...but too many 5s ) I'll stick with my bookmark to surfline mobile.
Awesome app

Version: 1.0.0
It's about time someone made a surf forecast app and this one is pretty good. It has most of more popular surf spots around me.
Suggestions:
Give us tide times!
Forecast more then 2 days out
Pictures of actual conditions or web cam access where available?
All in all great app and it's FREE
Awesome!

This app is fantastic! It's better than many on-line sites, and has options out the wazoo. I would actually pay for something this good, but being old and water logged I'm happy it's free.

Thank you Surfline and Oakley for giving away this app, it's terrific.
One Big Bummer: I see tide info for only 1 of my fav locations - This is a feature which should Not have been overlooked and should be fully integrated into the app.
One Small Bummer: and I do feel greedy about complaining at all since this app really is so stellar for the price; the app loads a bit slow, a few times I started to question if it was crashing because it took so long to load data.
Kinda fun being able to access News.
Thanks again, this surfing mom is stoked to have this on her iPhone - Now go write the code so we can all have Tide Info ; - )
And its Free!!
