App Smart Extra: Sushi-Making Apps
Mini_discussion_bubble NYTimes Gadgetwise Blog - Posted Fri, 10 Jun 2011 21:16:41 UTC +00:00
This week’s App Smart column helps sushi lovers navigate the confusing territory of the sushi menu, with photos, descriptions and other useful crutches. Those who’d actually like to prepare sushi should instead try Teach Me Sushi — which, for now, is only available on Apple devices. At $9 on iPad and $5 on iPhone the software isn’t cheap, but without the app, you could easily spend more than that amount of money on wasted food. The apps feature magazine-quality photography and well-shot videos that guide users through the preparation of basic maki, as well as some more difficult rolls. Teach Me Sushi is comprehensive, and includes help with such basic thing as calculating the amount of fish and rice to buy, and how to properly cook rice. Meanwhile, Teach Me Sushi Expert, also for $5 on iPhone, offers tutorials for an additional 8 types of (more challenging) sushi, like Shrimp Tempura Read More

iPhone application review: Teach Me Sushi is a fantastic sushi-making guide
Mini_discussion_bubble iPhone Footprint - Posted Fri, 09 Jul 2010 14:14:11 UTC +00:00
All sushi enthusiasts, listen up! Here is an app for you that is made-to-order on the App Store. Teach Me Sushi is just what the chef ordered for gourmets who delight in this particular food. For someone like me who falls in the gourmet category but is way off mark when it comes to cooking, sushi is not something that I would one fine day wake up and decide to make. But this app might just tempt me into trying, for it makes everything to do with sushi so simple. For starters, it has got visuals, and visuals speak way louder and better than text. Teach Me Sushi has 13 videos that have the A to Z of making sushi in a duration of 45 minutes. The app doesn’t make just the whole art of sushi easy, but itself is very simple to use and navigate. There are four buttons at Read More

Scary download but surprisingly worth it
Rich...! 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I nearly gave this one a miss given the download size. However in retrospect it was worth it. The vids make a huge difference, they're easy to follow and the visual reference kept me on track (I made some maki with absolutely no experience and was blown away at how it came out). Oh, the rice timer is pretty damn rad too. Twitter or FB integration allowing me to upload pics of my creation would be a nice-to-have in a later release.
Finally...there's an App for that
DLNYC 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
As someone who can barely make grilled cheese I have to say that this app could finally make me look cool in the kitchen! The videos are really well done and Jake is a great instructor (and really funny too). The rice timer is big bonus as I'd probably end up burning that too... : ) I'd absolutely recommend the app for anyone who wants to learn how to make sushi and have a really great time doing it as well. This could be the killer date app!
Fantastic app!
A_dibo 5.0 stars Version: 1.0
I love this app! Really easy to follow videos with great step by step instructions. I know very little about sushi (except what I love to eat), but this tells you everything you need to know (and more). Its format is neat and concise. i love the design of the app and the instructor is so energetic it really gets you psyched to see the outcome of your efforts. I don't typically like to cook but really like that I can have a dinner party and make something that doesn't feel too overwhelming to take on- and gives a great presentation. If you love sushi -- then you will love this app.
