When I bought my iPhone 3GS, one of the helpful Apple retail guys told me to give textPlus a try for sending text messages, as I'd bought into the cheapest texting plan AT&T offers. I've since graduated to unlimited texting, and had left textPlus by the wayside until I found out it had a blossoming community angle to the service. While you can still send free texts until your fingers fall off, the latest version of textPlus (an ad-supported app, although there's a paid version as well) allows you to create, participate and join in Communities, which are much like topical group chat rooms seen on AIM back in the early days of the service. Großspurig hieß es zur damaligen Zeit, dass man mit einer solchen Finanzierung “ein Duzend Amazons.com oder vier Googles” starten könnte. Exakt zwei Jahre nach dieser Ankündigung ist von den kleinen Finanzspritzen an unabhängige Entwickler nicht viel zu sehen. KPCB zieht trotzdem ein mehr als positives Fazit. Der iFund hat sich 14 (!) Firmen gewidmet und erwartet daraus Umsätze von $100 Millionen Dollar im laufenden Geschäftsjahr 2010. There's something about Apple's products that just makes people want to cuddle them -- we've talked about lots and lots (and lots) of Apple products turned into pillow form. Here's another: Drew Olanoff's (from Blame Drew's Cancer) mother made this iPhone pillow for him while he was recovering from chemotherapy. It's handmade and super cute -- I especially like the stylish icons, including the textPlus icon, which is Drew's own iPhone app. There's also a stitched Home button (which you can see in the full picture), and there's even a pocket on the side, sized just right for an actual iPhone of course. A recently released app that offers free text messages on the iPhone is welcome news to parents of teenagers upset over the cellphone bills of their hypertexting children. But can it be a sustainable business? Bits takes a closer look. TextPlus pays the text messaging bill to AT&T in exchange for showing ads to its users. Since textPlus came out in June, its 800,000 monthly users have traded 80 million text messages, with the flow currently about 1.6 million a day. Discovery Channel by (duh) Discovery Channel: I’m not surprised this app is at #1 right now – it looks like a smorgasbord of DC’s nerdy-but-cool educational content… videos, behind-the-scenes show info, photo galleries, TV schedule, all that. Bump by Bump Technologies: I’ve actually used this one and it works as advertised (and as shown in the iPhone commercial)! Select your info from Contacts, your fellow Bumper does the same, and with a quick bump the info somehow gets traded between both devices. Pretty cool.
