As anyone who has seen this video of a 2-year-old using an iPad knows, Apple’s famed touchscreen device has proven an intuitive, interactive learning tool for children. Yet creating apps for children — whether that’s musical games, learning exercises for children with autism or full-featured e-books — is no easy feat. Fixing children’s attention on an app requires a high degree of ingenuity, interactivity and, most importantly, variety. Josh Koppel, chief creative officer of Scrollmotion (the company that developed Esquire‘s and O, The Oprah Magazine‘s iPad apps, among others), says that the key to making a great children’s app is “to make play possible throughout the app in unexpected places” while remaining respectful of the original material. This criteria is especially valid for classic children’s books, many of which have been given new life in iPad form. I brought an iPad on a recent trip to Greece and perused a number

Oceanhouse Media has done it again with The Berenstain Bears and the Golden Rule by Stan and Jan Berenstain with Mike Berenstain (US$2.99). It's another in their line of popular storybooks for children, and it tells the tale of Sister Bear being given a locket containing the Golden Rule. The story goes on to explain the Golden Rule through Sister Bear's meeting with a new kid at school, Lizzie McGrizzie. I used to read the Berenstain Bears books to my (now-grown) children countless times, so I look at them quite nostalgically now. As in all the Berenstain books, teaches a moral and explains it through the narrative in a way that even the smallest of children can understand and take to heart. Oceanhouse Media has done something brilliant and can capitalize on it forever. In April, they released The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss, which I reviewed quite highly.

What a difference just a few short years makes. I bought my now six-year-old daughter her first iMac when she was three, and now her brother, who is two, is getting proficient on the family iPad. In fact, it is my six-year-old who is teaching my two-year old how to use the iPad. Something she now wishes she had when she was little. When and where I grew up, I would have been happy at the age of 10 to have more than one TV in the house, and more than five channels to choose from. While we now live in a more technologically advanced age of excessive choices, which of the thousands of iPad Apps does my two-year old enjoy the most? Apple has put up a useful Apps for Kids category, but I have found after purchasing quite a few apps off of this list, that my kids have

Editor-in-Chief, iLounge Published: Friday, April 9, 2010 Category: iPod, iPhone, and iPad Gems: Apps, Games + More Welcome to our first non-gaming edition of iPad Gems! As with our earlier game-focused version, we’re looking at a huge collection of different iPad apps today—20, actually—giving each a relatively brief overview. Unlike the prior column, we’re looking here at apps that either didn’t exist on the iPhone and iPod touch, or never previously received attention in one of our Gems pieces before. They’re unrated for the time being, but our descriptions make clear whether they’re worthy of your time and attention. ABC Player Apart from the app’s unfortunately vertical-only browser design, ABC Player (Free) from ABC Digital is an exciting piece of software—arguably the single biggest step forward in media consumption on an Apple device in a long time. ABC Player is a full-fledged browser and streaming video player for the ABC television

Oceanhouse Media has updated three of their popular Dr. Seuss iPhone/iPod touch apps for the iPad by updating their existing apps to universal binary. If you are already an owner of The Cat in the Hat, Dr. Seuss's ABC, or How The Grinch Stole Christmas! (US$2.99 each), all you need do is accept the free update and presto, you'll get a version that takes full advantage of the larger iPad screen while still working exactly as before on an iPhone or iPod touch. This is a wonderful idea, and one that I'd love to see other developers follow. We briefly covered some of these apps but haven't yet done a proper review, so it's about time we did. Oceanhouse has partnered up with Dr. Seuss Enterprises LLP, and they have done a remarkable job of turning these classics into apps. They put together an engine that they can plug any Dr.

by Today’s kids are so lucky; not only do they get to enjoy the Dr. Seuss app for the iPhone, they also get to experience the Seussical one on the iPad! Oceanhouse Media, the people that make the Dr. Seuss apps for the iPhone, have released updates for the three most popular Dr. Seuss apps, which make them iPad-compatible. That means that if you already own The Cat in the Hat [iTunes link], Dr. Seuss’s ABC [iTunes link] or How the Grinch Stole Christmas [iTunes link], you can enjoy them on more than one device. I went ahead and purchased the Cat in the Hat for iPad and spent some time playing with it. Readers have the option of either having the book read to them so that they can control when the pages are moved, reading the book themselves or letting the book go on auto-play. The app reminds me

‘The Cat in the Hat‘ was one of my favorite books as a kid. That, and ‘One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish‘. Classic Dr. Seuss stories for sure. If you love those old rhyming and nonsensical stories, Oceanhouse Media is dropping the price on all of their Dr. Seuss iPhone and iPod Touch apps today… in honor of the great Theodor Geisel’s (Dr. Seuss) birthday! The sale also happens to fall on The National Education Association’s ‘Read Across America’ day… which is an annual reading motivation and awareness program, designed to get people reading again. Normally Oceanhouse Media’s Dr. Seuss apps range from $2.99 to $3.99, but for today only you can pick up one of the following titles for $0.99: To get started, simply pop open iTunes or hit up the App Store on your iPhone and iPod Touch. Gotta love Dr. Seuss. *Tip of the Cap to

It's a good time to be a Dr. Seuss fan--and an iPhone or iPod Touch owner. Hot on the heels of last year's criminally overlooked "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and thoroughly entertaining Dr. Seuss Camera, Grinch Edition, Oceanhouse Media just dropped three new Seuss apps, starting with a spectacular e-book edition of "The Cat in the Hat." Like "Grinch" before it, this book is animated, narrated, and interactive. Children can choose either "Read to Me" or "Read It Myself" mode, both of which produce the original book's artwork and text--but with a little panning and zooming to lend an animated feel. "The Cat in the Hat" is not only a great diversion for bored children (and their harried parents), but also a learning tool. In "Read to Me" mode, each word gets highlighted as it's read. When the narration finishes, readers can tap different areas of the accompanying picture to
