The Typography Manual is a pocket resource for graphic designers and anyone that works with type. It provides all the essentials of a book reference on your iPhone or iPod Touch!
The Type Manual features a 60+ page book covering the history of type, type basics, how to properly set text and special characters, the latest information on typography on the web, font specimens, graphic design topics, and more.
The Visual Type Anatomy Glossary is a 100+ glossary of type terminology that doesn't just give you a definition, it shows you on the letters themselves.
Use the Style Guide to correctly set numbers, punctuation, capitalization, titles, and references.
Not sure how to create that degree symbol or currency mark? Use the Mac Character Keyboards to quickly find the key combination you need. Putting that special character into HTML? Hop over to the HTML Character Codes to find the right HTML number.
The Em Calculator can speed up your development time in creating scalable type for the web by doing the division for you.
Reading a magazine and curious what the type size is? Use the Font Size Ruler to get an estimate in serif or sans-serif.
The Type Manual also has references for paper and web banner sizes, resources on the web, inspiration and blogs, and a listing of type foundries.
The Typography Manual will be consistently upgraded with new content, new features, and the latest in typography, graphic design, and technology.

The wrong line height or kerning/font combination can be disastrous to readability. You can, of course, read books on the subject, but a ready reference tool can be had in this Typography Manual app, which looks about as to-the-point as such things can get. It does in fact comprise a short book, along with some handy tools for the printer or publisher

An OK start

Version: 1
This is a good start as a reference tool for graphic design students--but in some cases misses the mark on being comprehensive. Elementary topics such as proof reader's marks, the ability to view type specimens in more than one point size (and in papragraph form), vertical alignmnt rules, and better examples to heirarchy rules are missing. The all too condensed "brief history" should be expanded. There are major milestones that were omitted from the this section. To leave them out, only shortchanges the general public from understanding how typography has evolved to present day.

Being a creative director for x many years and so on. This app is beyond useless! it's filled with typographical mistakes (widows, rivers....) and clearly not worth my typing another word.

Being a Professional Graphic Designer for 30+ years, and a major typographic afficianado, it is nice to see this reference tool available for the iPhone. Now, of course it is not the "Be All/End All" of Typography, but it is a very sweet little reference app. The biggest weakness is that great typographic design is lacking here. I would have LOVED to have seen this app have a Fantastically Beautiful Design and use of Type in this App. Maybe in future updates?! (hint, hint). The Author should look at Design Books by Timothy Samara for Visually Stunning Desgn. When all is said & done, it is about time someone thought about all of us Type Fanatics out here.
Not really useful

There's really not much useful information in this little application; nothing that could not have been easily incorporated in a 10- or 12-page booklet. The buyer would be better off instead spending a few extra bucks to buy the excellent "Elements of Typographic Style" book.
Good work!

I think until there is a serchable version of ETS and/or TDR on the iPhone this is the app to beat for typographic reference. It's pretty attractive, it navigates well and the reference material is as nice to have at the tools like the Em Calculator and the Paper Sizes chart. Truly a great 1.0 piece of software and I look forward to future updates!

Brilliant!

Great app, not a replacement for Lupton's "Thinking with Type," but still brilliant, making a type app for the iPhone!

The Typography Manual is a great pocket edition of the original Typographic Desk Reference by Theodore Rosendorf. With an entire 60-page guide on type as well as a complete anatomy glossary, this is a must-have for any designer or type nerd. Along with the e-book, you also get a loath of resources such as a conversion table, em calculator, font size ruler, HTML characters, Mac keyboard characters, blogs and more. For just $5, what are you waiting for?
