If you have that new iPhone you received for the holidays, you're probably looking to load it up with some apps that will enhance your mobile experience. Let me suggest some of the best of the free apps. Of course, everyone will have their own list, but here are my 5 favorites that I think most new iPhone users will love to use and to show off their new iPhone. If you're a news junkie, by all means get Zite, newly released for the iPhone. It sets you up with news categories of interest to you, then learns what you like by keeping track of stories you click on. Over time, it gets smarter and smarter, so in essence it creates a personalized magazine for you. Their are other news readers and aggregators, but the presentation of stories in Zite and its ability to learn make it my first choice. Glypmse

As those of you using the free TUAW iPhone app in iOS 5 have already seen, there are a few issues with it; missing buttons, some broken functionality, et cetera. While we were expecting that the AOL team handling mobile development for us & all our sister sites would have an update ready for the iOS 5 release, that didn't happen. I was told that as of October 28, an update would be submitted to Apple. AOL has a QA process for mobile apps, and several bugs popped up once iOS 5 hit. I did receive a new build to test on Thursday, and I'm happy to report it works well with iOS 5. That said, I do not yet know if the latest version of our app has been submitted for App Store review. Therefore, on Monday, October 31, I will ask our mobile team to provide me with an

I'm here at Evernote's first conference, a 1-day affair featuring news, a panel and several sessions for developers. This morning Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote, kicked off the conference with some stats on Evernote usage. While Evernote has been featured in Apple Stores and is highly recommended, they haven't really spent any money on ads or marketing. As a result, the usage and growth is quite extraordinary. Here at TUAW, we're all big fans of Evernote (it's even integrated into our iPhone app). According to Libin, today Evernote can boast 12.5 million registered users. A year ago that number was 3.9 million. But how many regular users are there? Currently there are over 4 million "30 day active users" up 271% from last year. Even more incredible is that a year ago there were less than 100,000 paid users, and now there are over half a million. The incredible part, aside

Our good friends at Engadget have posted an update to their iOS app. The new version introduces a landscape viewing mode for all of the included content and new "save for later" options that will send your favorite Engadget posts off to reading services like Evernote, Instapaper, and Read It Later. The app is still free, and the new version is available right now in the App Store. We've got our own app on the App Store, and you may recall that it was updated for Retina Display compatibility a few months ago. It still doesn't run natively on the iPad just yet, but we're told an update for that is still in the works. Presumably we'll see some of these Engadget updates on our app as well. As grandma always said, patience is a virtue... so don't worry, the updated (and free) TUAW app is still coming soon.

Another installment of "3 apps" this week as we talk to Kai Cherry, iOS Imagineer at Getaround. Kai is a Mac and iPhone developer and a frequent commenter and guest on the TUAW Talkcast. This time we asked what his "favorite" 3 apps were, but as he couldn't reveal one of them, he noted that one of his most used apps was Camera+. Below are the other apps mentioned.

A few readers wrote in to tell us that the updated TUAW app was crashing on the iPad. We promised a fix, and hopefully we've delivered: TUAW version 2.0.2 is now available on the App Store. Please note that while this does correct the iPad crash and several other bugs, there is still a different in-app storage setup for saved articles and your saved posts will not transfer to the new version -- please make a separate note of them before upgrading. TUAW writer TJ Luoma reports the app is working fine on his iPad now. Give us feedback, either here in the comments or via our feedback form, and tell us how it's running for you now. As for when we'll have an iPad-formatted version of our app, that's unfortunately still up in the air. Meanwhile, we hope the iPhone version of our app works better for you after the

Update: We're getting feedback that the app is not working on the iPad, and we're saying the same problem here -- our development team is aware of the issue and they're working on correcting it ASAP. If you haven't emptied your Trash yet, the older version of the app (1.0.1.7) is still there -- you can pull it out to the desktop, delete the 2.0 version in iTunes, and drag the 1.0 .ipa file into your iTunes library to downgrade. You can't have one version for your iPhone and another for your iPad, unfortunately, unless you sync them on different machines. We'll advise as soon as we have a fixed version in the store. Also note that the new version of the app uses a different mechanism for saving posts than the older version did and the saved posts do not migrate to the new app, so please jot down your

A few readers have notified us that app ratings have disappeared entirely from the App Store in iTunes. The ratings still appear on the iOS App Stores and in browser previews of apps, but for the desktop iTunes view of the App Store, they are nowhere to be found. iTunes Connect was apparently down for a little while last night, but it's been down before and ratings have never vanished from the iTunes App Store. More likely than not, the ratings and reviews will reappear in the iTunes App Store soon; it's just odd that Apple hasn't sent a note out to developers about this.

Joystiq, our sister site and favorite stop for gaming news, is celebrating the release of their long-awaited app for the iPhone and iPod touch this weekend. The new app gives you quick and easy access to catch up on the latest news while on the go, and the category view gives you the ability to focus on reviews, interviews, contests, or updates for your favorite gaming platform. In addition to reading the site, you can use the search feature to find something specific, share your thoughts using the built-in comment feature, browse through the image and video galleries, send in news tips to the Joystiq team, and listen to recent podcasts for both the Joystiq Podcast and the Xbox Fancast. The app is available for free on the App Store. For more information, check out the screenshots in the gallery below, or head on over to Joystiq to check it out.

Unfortunately these guys are already sold out (though maybe there'll be more soon), but I'm still posting them here just to gaze on their awesomeness -- Etsy user Rabbitrampage put together these six iPhone icon keychains (well, five iPhone and one Finder) out of felt, thread, and fiber fill. I think they look great, though it would be nice to have even more custom icons available. I guess if you want a special icon keychain made of your own app (ahem), you'll have to make it yourself. This same Etsy user also enjoys wrapping your iPhone in felt recreations of old retro items like Game Boys and even a VHS tape. I've already got a case on my iPhone, but if I didn't have one yet, I'd definitely pick up one of these. [via iPhone Savior]

Dec 30th 2009 at 12:00PM All I want is for www.engadget.com and www.tuaw.com to redirect me to i.[engadget|tuaw].com when appropriate, be it Mobile Safari or some RSS aggregator app with built-in browser support. How can that be too much to ask? I don't get it. Actually, I really like the Comments Tab feature in the Engadget app. I hope it will inspire Tuaw app developers! This is more of a comment for many of the commenters who talked about wanting all their news in one place. I used to use an RSS aggregator too but I stopped using that and now just check my feed on http://www.yourversion.com. I get a real-time update on news, blogs, Twitter posts, etc related to only my interests. In fact, I found this post via yourversion.com... They have a free iPhone app too. Cheers! To me, this feels like another app that falls under the category

TUAW is an application that brings The Unofficial Apple Weblog website to your iPhone or iPod Touch. With this app, you can easily stay on top of the latest Apple news and rumors. It is both intuitive and functional with only a few minor bugs to complain about. The main page displays the latest Apple news that has been posted to TUAW. The site regularly posts new material and the app updates automatically. Tapping on an article will bring up a new page to read, save or share. Reading an article is a smooth experience, allowing you to pinch, zoom and view pictures and video right from in the app. You can also save the article, including images, for offline viewing. There is a separate section to view all of your saved articles. This feature is great for when you don’t have enough time to read the entire article and know

As our readers and staff are out buying copies of Mac OS X Snow Leopard today, we thought we'd also start rounding up news about software updates related to the OS update. We're getting a lot of emails today with news about Snow Leopard compatibility updates for applications, so we'll be listing the updates in this post. Be sure to check back from time to time today, as we'll be changing this post frequently. If you're using the new and free TUAW iPhone App [App Store link] to read this, be sure to tap the icon in the upper right corner of the screen to view the entire post.Creaceed HydraCreaceed has released version 2.1.2 of Hydra, an application for creating High Dynamic Range (HDR) photographs that are closer to what the eye actually perceives. This is the first Mac application for HDR photography that supports 64-bit architectures, which means that rendering

Aug 28th 2009 at 12:01AM Congratulations ! I love it !! I hope it's not been asked before but a direct email rather than launching Mail would be great (at the same time removing friend@example.com) would be cool too :-)Thanks! I would have preferred a more capable web app instead, but that's just me. The TUAW app is a nice thing to have , nevertheless. Can you add Read It Later as a share option? The picture gallery section of the app should include the galleries from the articles. After using this for a little bit, I'm disappointed that it doesn't pull content that comes after the Read More link. That kind of defeats the purpose since it means that we only get snippets of the articles (especially offline). Maybe it can be updated to include the full article? It would also be great to be able to set how many

Can't read entire article

The has great potential. However, you can't read the entire article. You are forced to see the web view. I'm sure they are doing it to get the ad views.
This defeats the entire purpose of being able to download content for offline reading.
Been waiting for this!!!

Version: 1.0.1
The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) is already known for hot news, insightful reviews, and detailed coverage of everything in the Apple world. Now it comes with its own iPhone app, which makes it even easier to read and search. Want to share a TUAW post with a friend? You just tap on one button and you can send a link to friends through email, Twitter, or Facebook.

Yea, it's just a nice way to read Apple news on an iPhone. But that being said, it does it very well. It's a great way to catch up on news as well as research apps, hardware, tips and tricks!
Best source for anything Apple

Version: 1.0.1
Love this app. Can't stop reading it everywhere I go. Everytime I hit the subway I load up the app and enjoy some offline reading. Makes the commute fly by. The TUAW team always get the best scopes on rumors and releases. A definite download for all users!
Cool, but a bit buggy

Version: 1.0.1
For fans of TUAW, this app is great. It has advantages over a traditional RSS reader or the iPhone mobile site in the form of catagories, galleries, and the ability to save articles you like.
However, the bar at the top, which you should be able to slide back and forthto reveal more choices, doesn't always work so well. More times than not, it appeared frozen for me, and I was unable to slide it without frequent attempts. If they fix that, this is definitely at least a 4 star app, if not higher (the developers could always cram a few more whizbang features in there, like perhaps the agility to play their podcast in the app).
Great App! :)

This app looks really beautiful! Time will tell if it is a home run, but for now it deffinatly will be on my first page. Can't wait to see how it holds up when they do a live blog of an apple event.
Better than using safari

This is way better than the mobile tuaw website through safari. It's faster. It's got the ability to comment like the full site. It's worth it and free!!!

Version: 1.0.1
This is great! I can take TUAW with me wherever me and my iPhone go, including planes and subways. I opened up the app, let it download some articles and then turned off the cell to see it in action... so cool. The galleries look amazing and the convenience of browsing all the categories and my saved articles makes this a winner.
Works Great

I love tuaw but to yell you the truth I hated the mobile site. This app is such a HUGE improvement on that that it really deserves the 4 stars.
