Today's smartphones are, by their nature, quite versatile. It's impossible to guide every lover on Valentine's Day to the app for their particular needs, because despite the requisite "flowers, chocolate, *something*" expectations, we all do it differently. I tried to round up a few apps that might appeal to just about anyone who participates in tomorrow's festivities. Happy Valentine's Day, if that's your thing! Going out to eat If you're trying to get a reservation, one of the fastest ways to check and make a reservation is with OpenTable (hopefully your area's restaurants are on-board with their system). If you're out and looking for somewhere to eat, I still use one of the first big breakout apps from the App Store, UrbanSpoon. Of course, you can always ask Siri, but if you don't have a 4S, try Yelp. Going out to find someone to love Personally I've had a great experience

By Lisa Caplan on February 8th, 2012 A look at four great iOS apps for a happy Valentine's Day Ah, Valentine’s day. That wonderful day where those in relationships set huge expectations for perfect romantic escapades that can seldom be met by their partner and singles wish they could share in the homage to Hallmark and Cupid. Finding the right thoughtful token or date locale doesn’t have to be an expensive ordeal, however. As always there are a bevy of holiday-themed apps that claim to help make the day either more special or more commercial depending on your point of view. We have collected our favorite four apps for singles and couples looking to make the most of February 14 without waking up broke on the 15th. Urbanspoon, the mobile restaurant recommendations and reservations application, is today adding a new feature called “Dineline,” which allows users to check-in to restaurants in order to track their dining habits. While most check-in apps are meant to register your presence at a venue for the purpose of game play, social networking, or receiving offers or discounts, Dineline is meant to be used to remember a meal, something more akin to Foodspotting than Foursquare. The feature, rolling out to iOS users this morning via an app update, adds a new icon to the Urbanspoon homescreen. For those of you who haven’t been on Urbanspoon for a while, it’s no longer just a clever slot machine-style toy to find new places to eat. It also lets you browse and search for restaurants, connect with friends, and snap and share photos of the restaurant or your meal. It’s this latter feature – the photo-sharing aspect

One of the all-time most popular restaurant apps on mobile is Urbanspoon (iTunes link). It is still one of the top 10 travel apps on the iPhone. The app’s signature gesture is a shake to find nearby restaurants. Urbanspoon just passed one billion shakes and has been downloaded 20 million times across all mobile platforms (iOS, Android, Blackberry). In March 2010, it hit 500 million shakes, so it’s doubled in less than a year and half. But what exactly is the value of a shake? Well, the apps run ads as does the website. With 100 million pageviews a month across those apps and the web, shakes turn into ad impressions. But the real play here is restaurant reservations. Urbanspoon is going after OpenTable. We spoke to Nilay Patel of Selligy at WWDC, and he was kind enough to show us Meeting Spot, an app for visitors in San Francisco attending events near Moscone Center. Selligy's backend technology sounds promising, as it goes beyond mere location-based data or simple keyword matches, and tries to bring you better information. In essence, they want you to get recommendations as though you had a resident there telling you all the cool, somewhat hidden places to check out. In practice the app worked reasonably well, perhaps better than Urbanspoon but not as thorough as Yelp (although you can see Yelp pages for venues). We're looking forward to seeing Selligy's tech expand beyond niche apps like this one. Check out the demo below.

However, I’m glad I took a look. Zagat to Go ($9.99) is perfect for finding a great place to eat. Restaurants are ranked on a 0-30 scale based on food, decor and service. Each entry includes key data about the restaurant such as price, location and features, and when applicable, the website and a link to OpenTable to make

by Condé Nast Digital Britain recently unveiled a series of apps for the iPhone and iPod touch, dubbed Condé Nast Traveller City Guides. There are four separate apps for Barcelona, New York, Paris and Rome priced at $9.99 each. The apps [iTunes link] are divided into six sections containing more than 500 searchable listings, complete with venue information, photos and editors’ reviews: The list of venues is well-curated; there are enough to appeal to a relatively broad array of tastes without being overwhelming. Users can bookmark interesting listing by adding them to a to-do list and share them via Facebook, Twitter and e-mail. What’s most impressive about the apps is their Augmented Reality functionality (pictured above). Simply point your phone in a direction and it will bring up images of nearby attractions, which you can narrow down by type. You can also use GPS to pull up venue locations on a

There's a great piece in the New York Times today about the growing practice of using mobile apps to find and review restaurants. The way it works is simple for customers. Just pull out your phone (or your iPad), launch the app and find what's nearby. Initially, OpenTable was the only app that could be used to make reservations. Now UrbanSpoon offers them as well, and customers are taking advantage. They're testing the idea in LA and Seattle, with 50 and 100 restaurants participating, respectively. Once you've eaten you can post a review. These are sorted by date, so those paying attention can see if a given place is on a slide or an upswing. Even without these apps, I'll use my iPhone to search "coffee" or "hamburgers" with the Maps app to find a place in an unfamiliar neighborhood. Taking it that extra step -- placing a reservation -- is,

Mar 24th 2010 at 1:00PM I have been an Urbanspoon user and supporter since their app was released! Easy to use and as a food blogger, they gave me the tools necessary to integrate my blog into Urbanspoon and vice versa. They also make it easy to add new restaurants to the database as well. Alot of users are also using Yelp, but I have never been a fan of their questionable practices. I find the information on the restaurant alone is more accurate and the reviewers on Urbanspoon are committed to giving accurate reviews. Go Urbanspoon! Yelp does not even come close to Urbanspoon (at least in Seattle and Utah). Urbanspoon provides more accurate information, better user reviews, and even pulls reviews from newspapers and blogs. This article is a non story. Not all apps are going to go to the iPad, just like there will be iPad apps that

If you’re looking for a top table at a top restaurant near you then you’re in luck. Europe’s leading online dining community and restaurant reservation service www.toptable.com has just released a native app for the iPhone. Toptable allows you to search for restaurants nearby, read reviews and make reservations. You may be asking what makes this app different to the others in the app store? Well, to be honest, at first glance, in terms of the general functionality, not much. But if you delve a little deeper into the application, it is far less Americanised than other apps such as urbanspoon or opentable and will certainly appeal to some Europeans. Particularly considering the app is also available in French and German. Furthermore, TopTable contains a number of additional features such as the inclusion of “special offer vouchers” for selected restaurants, up to 50% off in some cases, as well as an impressive augmented reality mode

After the iPhone (AppStore link) and BlackBerry, Urbanspoon is “going Android.” The application keeps all the functionality (and UI) of the iPhone version, allowing users to find restaurants based on price, current location (nearby) and culinary style. Moreover, Urbanspoon users can rate and review restaurants, providing other folks with the real-life information that can be/is useful when picking a place to dine. Probably one of Urbanspoon’s most popular features is the random local restaurant finder, and it’s of course included in the Android version. Simple shake the phone, and the application will suggest a place nearby. As for the Android-specific features, I haven’t caught much. Actually, it’s fair to add that it takes advantage of the bigger screen found in devices such as the and Moto Droid/Milestone to show more options. And that’s about it. If you like it, simply search for “Urbanspoon” in the Android Market and take it from

Urbanspoon [App Store, Free] has been updated to add an awesome shiny new augmented reality mode called “Scope.” When viewing it on your device normally, it shows your location as a blue pin in Google Maps, and nearby restaurants in red pins. Aiming the camera at the horizon, however, causes it to switch over to a live camera feed with nearby restaurant locations layered over it. Resturaunts appear as large brightly colored circles containing their Urbanspoon rating. Most-liked restaurants show up as dark orange, and less liked locations fading into a grey. The new Urbanspoon requires an iPhone 3GS. Categories: News Tags: id

Two-thirds of the Urbanspoon team dropped by Founders Co-op for our weekly all-hands lunch this week, fresh on the heels of their acquisition by IAC. They shared the story of their journey from struggling Facebook app developer to iPhone app superstars, including some of the best (and worst) decisions they made along the way. Urbanspoon did a *lot* of things right, but one in particular stuck in my head as relevant to our latest company: AppStoreHQ. Long story short, Urbanspoon made it possible for any blogger to get their restaurant reviews featured on Urbanspoon just by including a little widget they called a "Spoonback". The presence of a Spoonback allowed Urbanspoon to sift through the sea of food-related blog content and zero in on just those posts relevant to the restaurant in question. Urbanspoon got the benefit of including the freshest and most original review content on their site, while participating

04.30.09 Check off Urbanspoon, developer of the popular app with the same name, on the growing list of developers who have been acquired by larger companies looking to push into the App Store and related mobile businesses. IAC announced yesterday that it closed a deal in February to buy Urbanspoon, a leading online local restaurant guide that aggregates restaurant reviews from food critics, bloggers and diners. AppCraver gave Urbanspoon high marks in a review last August. Among its features, the app helps foodies find nearby restaurants, filter them by cuisine and price and rate their dining experience for other Urbanspoon users. Urbanspoon was on Apple’s top 10 overall, most-downloaded free apps for 2008 and currently holds the sixty-ninth spot on the overall free apps list. Urbanspoon will remain an independent brand and a wholly-owned business of IAC, according to IAC. The company did not disclose the terms of

Apple was expected to serve up their 1 Billionth (with a capital B) App Store download today, and lo and behold, Apple has announced that they’ve officially seen 1 billion iPhone/iPod Touch applications downloaded from their iTunes App Store! In less than a full year of existence, Apple and the iPhone have managed to make mobile applications as commonplace as an iTunes music purchase, and the App Store’s popularity continues to grow. The total tally of iPhone applications in the iPhone AppStore was estimated to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 25,000 in March 2009. And, with thousands more iPhone applications hitting the AppStore on a monthly basis, Apple’s success with their integrated mobile application delivery model will likely continue. No wonder everyone and their grandmother are trying to launch mobile application stores of their own. For the record, it took Apple six whole months to reach the 500-million milestone. From

It's no Vindigo...

Version: 1.11
Once upon a time on the Palm, there was an app called Vindigo - it even used Gayot content for food reviews.
The nice thing about it was that you could CHOOSE an intersection, and it would tell you what was around, from a radius of 1/4 to 2 miles in distance, with ratings and reviews.
Sir, I knew Vindigo, Vindigo was a friend of mine, and you sir are no Vindigo.
The best you can do with UrbanSpoon is to a.) browse by your GPS location to 1/2 mile (eh...), or browse the neighborhoods, which DON'T overlap, and have weird, non-native identifications. For example, in Philadelphia everybody knows CENTER CITY & SOCIETY HILL, but UrbanSpon terms these areas as Washington Square West, all the way from below 6th St to the Schukyll. I've lived in Philly for over 25 years and I SWEAR I've NEVER heard ANYBODY refer to any place named "Washington Square West", although I saw it once on a civic association plaque. So at least in Philly, some of the neighborhood divisions are artificial.
A radius search from a definable location would overcome this, so I recommend the developers focus on geography, and also get the neighborhood terminology right, at least for Philly.
Also, Vindigo allowed you to search by rating across the entire city, something that I don't think is possible in UrbanSpoon.

We always have the problem of deciding where to go to eat. No one can ever come up with what they want to do so we sit around. This app is made for my group of friends. Luckily, I'm in an area where it can actually give quite a few recommendations as well.

My hubby & I are always crippled by indecision when it comes to where we should eat out. This is such a creative idea for a program. We haven't encountered any errors accept user errors.
Awesome.

I live in dallas, so there are TONS of options avaliable and it is great!! I have to say this is probably my favorite app so far because it lets you pick the kind of food, the specific area, the price, or any just one or 2 of those! It probably wouldn't be so great in a small city, but in a big city it is great!
Interessting app at a great price point
Paipaizoo
This is probably the most fun "where should we eat today" app out there in the App Store. Two things need to improve upon: 1) Show restaurant on map function should take you to the built-in Google Maps and 2) It is not very sensitive to the shaking gesture and I had to shake it really hard to make it work sometimes.
Perfect app!!

This is absolutely perfect if you have a hard time finding places to check out

A must have if you live in a large city!
If it didn't crash ...
iPhone Chief
It keeps crashing when it asks me find location. On top of that, when you choose a location instead of letting it find location, it didn't have anything in our area and when I searched a larger area I know very well, it didn't list a LOT of major local food attractions. I like the idea, but crashing, limited areas and the missing attractions keep this down. If they can fix it with updates, I think this could be a great app.
It's fun!!!

Interesting slot machine interface; please keep it up with database maintenance and updates. Good app!!! :-)

I've used this app for a couple of days now, and am pleasantly surprised at the number of restaurants in its database. Lots of restaurants with reviews, and it makes a usually boring task a bit more manageable.

This is a fun app! Thanks. I'm often the guy in my group to tell the rest where to eat because I had the iPhone and google. But it wasn't fun being the decider. Now I have some help, thanks. :)
Fun app - One improvement needed
KateW
This is a fun little app and the interface is very nice. The shake feature is addictive. It couldn't find my location, even though I'm in a supported neighborhood. I do like the fact that I can manually select my location — but I wish the application would remember the setting, so I don't have re-select it every time.

I like it but I wish it worked without WiFi so I can use it in the car where most needed.
Fun app
ralphdaily
The app works fine for me and brings up restaurants I had not thought of. I use it every day. Only issue is that initially it uses internet as source of restaurants and thus about 20% of the database is wrong. You can make submissions to add, edit, or delete restaurants (easiest through their online website) and I am doing that. If users will help update info, this can be a great app.
Easily one if the coolest apps
BostonPokeFan
The content is great, sure. But the technology behind it (where you shake the phone to spin) is very, very cool.
Decent application but double check info from another source
Claytizzle07
I was recently in La Jolla looking for an Indian restauarant and Urbanspoon directed me to a restaurant that no longer existed. I would recommend double checking the information that Urbanspoon gives you from another source before venturing out to a restaurant you are not familiar with...or at least calling first.
