WordPress has updated its iOS app, adding few important usability enhancements to allow you to better manage/edit your blog while on the go. The most important change is in the new styling buttons that enable text formatting (bold/italic), links and/or lists. No longer will you have to manually code HTML elements – you can now focus on content. The second important change is the full-screen mode support, which is especially handy when you have a Bluetooth keyboard connected to your iPhone or iPad. As you can imagine, this will free up the space on the screen for your content. Finally, now you can subscribe to WordPress.com blogs right from the app. Not sure you’ll want to do that (I know I like my Google Reader feeds) but hey – it’s good to have an extra option. In any case, you can easily update WordPress from the AppStore or install it (if

The new version adds handy styling buttons right above the keyboard, so you no longer have to put in your markup manually for bold or italic text, links or lists. Full-screen editing gives you more real estate to view what you're working on, especially handy on the iPhone's screen. You can also now follow other subscribed Wordpress.com blogs directly in the app.

In this continuing series here on ReadWriteWeb, we round up some of our favorite new applications for smartphones each month, specifically for iPhone and Android devices. This spring edition includes some major new launches on Android, like Netflix and Google Music, as well as some incredible technology leaps on iPhone, like the app which identifies trees by their leaves! As a bonus for this month, we've added a section with notable app updates and another featuring new tablet apps. New Apps for iPhone LeafSnap: Possibly the most ground-breaking app released in recent days, LeafSnap lets you identify trees by taking a picture of their leaves. Created by researchers at Columbia University, University of Maryland and the Smithsonian Institute, the app is like something you would see on TV, roll your eyes at and scoff, "as if that exists!" Well, technology moves fast - it exists! And, according to the app's description,

Finally, there's the always exciting stability improvements. Grab it while it's hot from iTunes. [iTunes App Store via WordPress Blog]

by Automattic has released a major improvement to its WordPress iOS app, fixing a variety of bugs while adding analytics and photo-sharing features. Version 2.8 of the app fixes 31 different bugs, including errors that caused 75% of all app crashes. Issues with external keyboards and adding categories on the iPad have been resolved. The app also comes with two new features: a Quick Photo button and a Stats section. The Quick Photo feature lets you snap a photo, quickly write a blog post around it, and publish. It’s similar to PicPosterous, Posterous’s rapid blogging iPhone app. WordPress says the feature is only available for iPhone, at least for now. The other major addition is Stats. This feature provides a quick way to see daily, weekly and monthly pageviews, along with information such as top referrers and post views. The feature is available for all WordPress.com blogs. but self-hosted blogs need

Blogging platform WordPress just announced a major upgrade to its long-beleaguered app for the iPhone and iPad. The new version is awesome. (iTunes link.) The company says it's now solved most of the major problems, squashed the bugs that caused 75% of the apps crashes and now it's time to add new features. New features added in the version now available in the App Store include: a "Quick Photo" feature that lets you snap and post a photo very fast, a mobile stats display, localization in 10 langues and more. This new version is the first one I've downloaded for awhile and I was thrilled to see how easy it was to add a self-hosted WordPress.org blog to the app now, too! As someone who used WordPress.org for my personal blog these updates have got me feeling absolutely ecstatic. This should drastically increase the number of quick little mobile posts I

Keine spannende Überschrift, kein spannender Blog-Beitrag? Let’s see.

Yes, that's right, free software, and especially open source software. Open source is wonderful because it gives developers a hobby, and the users some hope that their favorite free software will only get better with age--sort of like a fine wine. This week, we're covering open source software like WordPress, Miro and WikiHow. Other improvements include an overhaul of locally saved drafts, which brings it more in line with the web version -- including the ability to autosave while the post is being written. Also, version 2.6 implements a full media library within the app. WordPress for iOS 2.6 is a free download from the App Store and available now. [Via Macworld]

When I was tasked to write a roundup of iPad blogging apps, I figured this would be the usual pros and cons of four or five apps. Instead, I found only two, one of which is specific to WordPress (see our disclosure below). Since neither of the two apps made me all that happy, the multi-app roundup I was hoping for instead became a case of “two apps enter, no app leaves.” Blogging on the iPad is a sorry state of affairs — I’m also coming at this from the angle of a prose blog, not a photo blog. Both WordPress and BlogPress allow you to do the same basic features: type in your thoughts and press publish. Neither of the apps let you define links or format your text — you’re limited to plain style. Some of this, I am led to believe from researching other apps with the same

On the go blogging is about to get a little clearer and quicker thanks to the recent update to the WordPress app, which now sports retina display optimization, fast app switching, and few other handy new features. Besides the addition of retina display optimization and fast app switching, WordPress v2.5 also contains a new “add blog” feature that allows you to add all of your WordPress.com blogs in a single step, better handling of drafts in progress when quitting the app, and a bunch of performance enhancements, UI improvements, and bug fixes. Those of you who won’t be getting an iPhone 4 this week won’t be able to take advantage of the retina display optimization, of course, and if you haven’t updated to iOS 4 you won’t be able to utilize fast app switching, so get to it! WordPress for iPhone and iPad, for those of you who aren’t aware, is

We let you know a couple days ago there were a few apps that had already been updated via the App Store to support iOS4. Since then we’ve seen a few more roll out. Some developers have really taken advantage of the new APIs in iOS4. Others seem to just be adding compatibility at this point. Let’s hope a lot of them are working on substantial updates. Hit the jump for some more iOS4 compatible apps! Evernote (version 3.3.5) is one of the first I’ve seen to implement quite a few 4.0 APIs. Not only does it come complete with fast app switching integration, but your notes will also be able to sync in the background. This will be extremely useful for users who like to upload pictures. I’m always doing this when I’m comparing prices. I’ll take pictures of SKUs from different stores and tag them accordingly which allows me

Im Heft enthalten ist die bereits verlinkte Stephen Fry-Kolumne: I have met five British Prime Ministers, two American Presidents, Nelson Mandela, Michael Jackson and the Queen. My hour with Steve Jobs certainly made me more nervous than any of those encounters. Die 64 Megabyte der Anwendung soll nur die eine Ausgabe beinhalten und keine Möglichkeit der Aktualisierung zulassen. Time Magazine kostet auf bedrucktem Papier derzeit $20 US-Dollar

WordPress has just released version 2.4 of its iPhone app, which is really version 1.0 for the iPad. Unfortunately we’re not able to test this out yet but first impressions definitely look positive. Working with designer/developers Small Society, who have developed apps for the likes of Starbucks and Kyte, WordPress says the new app far easier to use than previous versions. “Skimming through your comments and moderating them is far faster than before. And using the app is simply more beautiful than before.” says Matt Thomas, WordPress’ art director. Bloggging on the iPad is one of those things I’m particularly looking forward to trying out, with any luck WordPress’ new iPad app will make this a distinct possibility. In its post announcing the release, WordPress assures us they’re just getting started. Download the new iPhone/iPad app here.

Do you already own an iPhone or iPod Touch and are planning on buying an iPad, too? Then you need to know about the new "universal" applications now available in the iTunes App Store. These combo apps for Apple's line of mobile devices are basically "buy one, get one free" deals except for one small difference - both apps are bundled into one download. When you run the universal application on a small-screened device, you'll see the iPhone version and when you run the app on your iPad, you'll see the larger, iPad-only version. And these won't just be blown up, oversized iPhone apps either - they'll be custom designed apps made specifically for the iPad. When searching through the application store, you can identify the universal apps by the small plus sign that appears to the left of the application's price in the search results. Or, if viewing the description

Wordpress for the iPhone (and iPod touch) has recently been given an update. The app is now at version 2.2 and with that comes a few new features. While not a large set of new features was added, I would say these are going to be welcomed additions. At least welcomed by those who are looking to better manage a blog on-the-go. According to the “what’s new” section in the App Store listing, Wordpress version 2.2 users will now be able to reply to and edit comments. Additionally, the app has also added highlighting for new items in the comment list, which means that comments still pending approval should be quicker to find. Finally, as it was, the Wordpress app remains available as a free app.

As another week passes, the seams of Apple’s App Store have been stretched even further with a deluge of new releases. Digging through the latest apps, I’ve selected four fresh picks for you to check out. It’s Halloween and so my top pick for this week is Alive 4-ever, a top-down zombie shooter with plenty of guts and gore to go around. I’ve also been checking out TowerMadness Zero, NASA and WordPress 2. As it’s Halloween, I thought that at least one of my top picks this week should be themed for the occasion. Despite the clumsy sounding name, Alive 4-Ever is a surprisingly polished top-down shooter. The plot is simple and disgustingly cliché: for whatever reason, a zombie apocalypse happens, you take to the streets to rescue other survivors. The game takes its inspiration from some of the best zombie titles out there, including Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead.

The new version of Wordpress for iPhone just arrived in the App Store (iTunes link). While the first version was already quite usable, this update brings a number of new features and usability enhancements to the Wordpress experience on the iPhone. The new interface makes it easier to switch between comments, posts and pages. The comments interface now also displays Gravatars. Throughout the app, the Wordpress team has tweaked the interface and it's now easier to manage your blog from the iPhone. The new version also now automatically saves posts and restores them if the network connection is lost during the publishing process. Just like the first version, Wordpress for iPhone 2 is an open-source program. It's important to note that this new version will not appear as an update to the old version. Instead, users will have to install a new app, which can run side-by-side with the older version.

Version: 2.4
I've been using this app since the very first version. It makes it so easy to manage my multiple blogs (both WordPress.com powered and self-hosted). Even if I'm out on the run, I can write a new post and publish it or save it for later. No more having to remember to make a post when I get home.
Highly recommended. I love it.
Straight to version 2 w/ no import of old data
Strange Thought
Version: 2.0
If your a user of 1.x than this app doesn't come up in the App store as an update which I find odd (but I guess I understand the reasons). However, as others have noted all your blogs in 1.x are not imported (the login and URLs of those you manage) and it's a pain if you manage many or for that matter don't remeber your passwords. As far as I can tell the app is a bit slower than 1.21.1. Sigh....but I give a B+ for effort and it's free ;)
Great app

Version: 2.1
Just wrapped up going to a few conferences the last few months and did all my blog updates directly from the app.
I did have some problems where if I took a photo and attached it then the connection was lost, the app seemed to have lost the picture. Always take a picture using the camera app and then post with Wordpress.

Version: 2.0
Have used this latest version of WordPress for iPhone for a few days now. It is a dramatically improved, more capable version than its predecessor. If you've not already upgraded from 1.0 to 2.0, you should seriously considering doing so. Better yet, doing so is painless as both are installed as distinct apps. You can have both 1.0 & 2.0 installed at the same time...risk free.

Version: 2.2
This is a well designed and useful app if you use Wordpress. New features are welcomed and add to it's utility. Surely more is on the way.
Great little app but does have a flaw
Addesso
Version: 2.1
I tend to write spontaneously and the ideas rarely come in front of my laptop. I've used Evernote to wrangle those ideas and then write when I get home, but with this app, now I can draft directly and write/edit as time permits or if the whim strikes. It does have a recovery backup in case the app gets interupted, which is a nice touch.
But beware saving drafts locally. Sporadically, the app won't correctly save a round of edits forcing me to rewrite it again. Extremely frustrating with long passages. Doesn't seem to occur saving drafts on the web, but the tradeoff is waiting for the draft to sync.
Easy acess to my blog

This is a nice app to save drafts, make edits, and upload photos while on the go. I'm very much looking forward further development but it's getting better for sure.

Version: 2.0
When I first tried to connect it told me to go to my admin page and enable the ability to allow remote posting. This took me a bit because I kept forgetting which page it wanted me to go too
Soon after I was tapping away and it worked flawlessly. If you are looking for tons of featured and full administration then this app is a bit remedial and you should just use safari. Otherwise it fit exactly the needs I had.
Very happy. :)

This new version has the ability to easily moderate comments. I love this app! I write a daily blog for my fitness company and I am able to take pics of the workouts and post into the blog quickly and easily.
Future updates? I would like to see photo editing and prefs. I would also like to be able cut and paste a link from safari.

Tollie Williams
Version: 2.0
This is a regression; thankfully, 1.x is still available. Sure, 2.0 adds photo uploads and the ability to see your latest comments, but they have apparently cut *blogging* features like tagging a post and assigning it to a category. Unless I'm missing them, or they appear after a new post is saved, I do not see them here. Stick with 1.x. ** UPDATE ** I realized I was on the pages button, and that the functionality of the "compose" button is different depending on which bottom button is selected. This is different behavior from other apps (like those that post to twitter), but alas, tagging and categories are still there.

I just needed an app to update my wordpress without too many settings or bells and whistles. This was perfect. Could use and horizontal keyboard though.
Love it

Works great just like a you'd expect a wordpress product to work.
New version 2 is much better.

Although I'm not quite sure why it's an entirely different app on its own and not an update from the previous version, I still think that this app is amazing. Never have I been able to blog "on the go" like I can with this app. It's almost entirely full featured. I especially like the ability to look at comments. The UI also deserves some praise. The original Wordpress application seemed pretty bland to begin with; however, this wordpress 2's UI hits a home run for me. I'm still just getting used to the application itself, but as long as it keeps running and keeps getting updates I'm sure it will bring many Wordpress users both convenience and enjoyment.

This version has so many great improvements. I find it so usefull for updating and managing my blog ifonehacks.com on the go. I love the Wordpress platform and all the developement effort that goes behind it that makes great things like this possible. Thanks.

Confused about why this is a new app and not a beta-tested update to the first app. I like that I can change dates on my posts to the past too. I use wordpress.com and it works fine.

I have been using 1.0 and the one feature I wish it had, that the 2.0 version does have, is if I saved a draft online I couldn't continue working on it on my iphone, but now I can! Just that feature alone I think is awesome. And now I can manage my comments as well. I haven't checked out the other things but so far these two things are the reason for my high rating. I recommend to anyone who has 1.0 to get this version and toss the other like I did.
Yes, yes, yes ;)

Very good update! Works great, looks clean but why it is only in english? We need international version.

I've been using this app for some time now. I've never posted a review here before but I found my experience to be drastically different than what some individuals have reported so I decided to put in my dues. I'm no pro blogger by any means but adding a blog took mere moments, not 3 minutes. Saving a draft saved it on the blog website, not just a local draft. Making a post took only a few seconds also. I should mention that the blog I work on is the most up to date WP version. The app has only crashed on me once and since it restored the article to right where I left off I still will give it 5 stars especially considering it's completely free in the first place. Apps crash from time to time, whether it be on the iPhone, another phone or ANY desktop operating system. To ask our phones and the humans who write code for them to be absolutely perfect is rather foolish in my humble opinion. If it's crashing for you constantly then I bet other apps are crashing with about the same consistency compared to use. Maybe you're a button masher or maybe you have a funky app installed that's screwing other things up?
